My local paper publishes head lines from past issues of the same date. This one is from 1944:

MAN ARRESTED

FOR THEFT

OF PANTIES

A local man was arrested about 8 p.m. Saturday for the theft of 13 pair of panties from Dobson’s on the Public Square.

The arrest was made when the man was halted near the store by C.E. Hobson, manager, with the panties, valued at $11.48, in his possession.

The case was immediately sent to the grand jury, which is now in regular session

I know stealing isn't really funny, but you can't help but chuckle.
