Utah Mom Finds "Indecent" T-Shirts At Store, Buys All...

The first thing that popped in my twisted head was how much money she could turn around on these on ebay. I am sure PACSUN will thank her for making their t shirts "taboo".

I'm shocked they have a pac sun in Orem! The mall in southern Utah would not let them in (they even voted down a Soma with a rally, and I think Soma is way more tasteful then the bras I see at walmart and target).

At Christmas I ordered my daughter a exclusive my little pony figure from pac sun. I had to sign and have the box opened that it did not contain adult items! very embaressing. The postmaster also does this for all drug store.com purchases. I buy cough drops and band aids(due to an allergy) so every month I have to open my box to show Im not buying pornos.

Someone doesn't understand how retail clothing stores work. Among other things, she'd better hope their return policy allows her to get all of her money back on day 59 of a 60-day return window, even with a receipt.

I hated the shirts, myself, but shaking my head and walking on would be my reaction (well, I wouldn't be in a mall in the first place, so even that is theoretical).

There were some funny comments under that article.

Really??? Is porn illegal where you live or something?

I wonder if she screamed "Nike!!!" loudly while gathering up the shirts to buy them?

Mrs. Cox should probably run over to Victoria's Secret and buy them out as well and tell the manager to take down the displays.

I also don't like the shirts, but I think what the mom did was a bit stupid. What she did might turn into a Terry Rakolta situation for Pacsun.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry_Rakolta

In short, Terry was a housewife who led a boycott against FOX in the early years because of Married With Children. Her boycott lead to people tuning into the show and the show gained more popularity. I can maybe this Utah mom's actions doing a similar thing.

Wait - what?? I don't understand why you can't buy porn! Not that you are, but if you were so inclined, what difference does it make? And what if you had a big ol' box o' condoms ("fun" ones with special lube or flavors)? Is that frowned on?? I bought a vibrator online once - I'm not particularly ashamed of my sexuality or anything, but I would really hate to have had to open that up in front of my mom. The whole thing with Adam and Eve online is that you can purchase it without being "embarrassed" by going into a sex shop!

I realize I live in liberal California, but I'm absolutely shocked - my brother's porn collection in the nineties (back when you bought actual dvds) would have been so much smaller it probably would have produced terrible financial consequences for the entire adult industry!

** After looking at the shirts - I do find them to be in poor taste, but unless they're being marketed to children (like, available in children's sizes), I don't see how they're breaking any laws. Remember those bathing suit cover-up shirts in the '80's that had a busty, hourglass woman's shape in a tiny bikini airbrushed on? I mean, equally poor taste, but they were definitely an off-color fad at the Southern California beaches around here (I wouldn't be caught dead in one, but then again, I was 8).

Wait, the postman makes you open your packages in front of him??? I've never heard of such a thing

I'm really surprised by silverspoons's comment too and I live in Virginia. Does the definition of adult items include vibrators and handcuffs and stuff? And I thought it was legal to possess (adult, consensual) porn in all fifty states?

A lot of debate/controversy goes on Utah regarding porn due to the LDS church's influence there. I think it was silverspoons and other posters were the ones who mentioned an incident years ago in Utah where some a video store owner had legal issues because of the porn section.

I could be wrong about this, but what this postmaster is doing sounds illegal. I think you can open packages for inspection IF you suspect the package might contain something illegal to send through the USPS, but not otherwise.

Damn, I wish my mom was still around so I could ask her this question. She worked for the Postal Service for years and ended her carrier as postmistress of a small PO.

I think those shirts are in poor taste in my opinion, but she went about it the wrong way as that store most likely got a new shipment of those shirts. I think it's similar to what happened when that mom wanted people to boycott Married With Children, it made the show even more popular. I think the same thing is going to happen with PacSun, as their sales could easily go up as people buy those shirts because they know some crazy Utah Mormon housewife is offended.

As most people have said, what will most likely happen is the inventory software will show that the store is out of that particular item, and they will be replenished in the next shipment. I hope the woman can't get her money back.

What am I missing? She plans to return them on day 59 she says. So then what? The store will just restock them, won't it?

So, she stops people from buying these shirts for 59 days? So what?

KPMom, I wondered the same thing also. After 59 days, the store will just put them back on the shelf and they will sell even more than if she never bought them.

I don't understand why she had to do anything beyond ignore the items. Did she think that she was protecting children from the sight of tacky t shirts? Generally, if you don't act shocked over something like this, little kids won't even notice.

The irony of someone named Cox buying lewd t-shirts. I guess no one ever told her that Cox is a homonym of cocks and therefore the plural of penis.

I recently met a former LDS member who was divorced from her still-Mormon (ex?) husband because he had a destructive porn addiction. Hehehe I thought 'twas humorous!

I kinda wanna buy one of those shirts just to spite the miserable hag.

And they make me giggle.

How is this legal? Sorry, the whole Mormon domination thing is unbelievable. Does he read your mail, too?

Stores rotate inventory and old things go on sale, so I guess she is thinking that the shirts will be reduced enough in 60 day that they will lose money on it.

I have only worked at Macy's, which has a similar 60-day-with-receipt (or on a Macy's card) for a full refund. However, the store always has the option to give a gift card instead of cash, especially after 30 days. Also, if the shirts are in high demand, then they can still sell them at full price anyway. Hilarity would be if the store can still sell them at full price AND she gets a gift card instead of cash. Hehe.

I wonder if it's because you have to be 18 to buy vibrators, etc? I LOVE drugstore.com for a TON of stuff, including some "adult" stuff and it seems that their "sexual well-being" section is quite popular - they have a wide variety of items. Highly suggested if you are far from a sex shop or a little too shy to go in one. 8-) I'd be mortified to have to open my package from them in front of my small-town postmaster who I know. Not because of the adult stuff but the stuff you really ARE sort of mortified to have to buy, like anti fungal cream and colace.
