Duggars, Duggars Everywhere - general discussion Part 4

I watched the HP interview. I get so tired of them blaming Hollywood for the ills in our society. The answer could just as easily be turned around to say that Hollywood reflects society rather than leading society. If you watch movies from the 30s, 40s and 50s, it looks like Hollywood was a mirror to what was going on at the time. Just once I wish an interviewer would then ask a follow-up question which would be: "What do you think we, as a society, should do about "Hollywood" and what role would the government play?" Besides, I am not convinced that people behave as badly as they, the Duggars, perceive them to behave. Our society is definitely changing but all civilizations do. We can only hope that, despite people like the Duggars, people will want to become educated, learn, grow and adapt.

I just sat through the whole 30 minute Huffpostlive interview up on the Duggar family blog.

A few observations

1. Josh surprised me, he seemed to be the only decent speaker of the group and he seemed to actually talk in words other then Gothard-speak.

2. The kids under Joy should have been left at home. This was the older girls book tour. The questions had nothing to do with them and they were board/dozing/restless, loved Jordyn (about 16:00 minute mark) is sitting in JB's lap and is picking her nose and eating it.

3. That was the most I have seen JD talk and I don't know how he ran for any public office. He was the boy version of Jill, spouting office servant's heart and tv is the root of evils and had no idea how to answer the question about how other guys think about women and dating and sex. (at least josh directly said sex and didn't gloss it over).

4. I think Jill might have let the engagement slip. She was asked about courtship and said something about the difference in Ben & jessa between courting and engagement phases.

5, Jessa is shy.

6. Can Jimbob ever answer a question. they asked about how he paid for his healthcare and 19 deliveries, and he went off on to some other story about having to wait months in Canada for medical care? Josh again had to step in and give a real life example.

All an say, ugh! those kids need to be at home in school. Josh, Jill, and JD seemed like the only ones interested in being there.

Also lets hold Jim Bob to his word. He promised this season you will see the Duggars do things they have never done before. He said it will not be the same old stuff, it is new and exciting (plus we get to meet Ben, which was not part of the new and exciting ventures) .

I've always thought that people who are the most conservative, like the Duggars, are the ones most obsessed with sex. If they weren't they wouldn't be so pre-occupied with modesty and purity.

I've always found that creepy. It's always the fundies that have the 6 year olds going on about the dangers of pornography, etc. Why are such young children thinking about sex so explicitly?

I saw a 15 second clip of the Duggars this morning, and there was a random girl. I think it was a Query girl, but I'm not sure. So I dont know if that was from fox or not, it was on the duggar tumblr thingy.

That's interesting that Jessa is shy. I kind of thought Jinger was.

Notice how they have Jessa positioned so that her left hand is out of view? And I also don't think it's an accident that she is wearing an extra long cardigan that covers her hands just in case she forgets to keep her left hand behind her. She is definitely engaged.

As much as he annoys me, Josh has always struck me as the most--not intelligent, exactly, but more aware of and comfortable with the world around him, maybe? I remember when he and Anna were engaged and went on a "double date" with Jana and JD, and Josh said something like, "Well, we ARE from Arkansas!" At the time I was surprised that he would a)have any awareness of those types of stereotypes, b)acknowledge how weird the idea of a double date with his sister and brother as the other couple is and c)be comfortable enough to joke about it.

The random non-Duggar was identified as Heidi Query. Maybe they needed to have her along since the J'Slaves may be too busy on the book tour to babysit.

Or perhaps there is a courtship a-brewin' with an older Duggar son--hasn't this been rumoured before?

I think she is doing that so that everyone following the courtship will continue to speculate, just like you have. If TLC doesn't want this made public until it airs on tv she would be an absolute idiot to wear an engagement ring. Anyone can see it and it would be all over the twitter world. Now she may be engaged, but I bet they're keeping it very, very private until the big formal announcement.

During the HP interview, JB talked about their insurance coverage. I wonder if he has given any thought to the fact that premiums are, in part, based on usage and his having 19 children could skew the premiums for everybody within the pool. If his insurance is not pooled, just the fact that they have so many people using the insurance would impact the cost of his premium. I wonder if the older kids (adults, really) have their own policies or if JB is using the ACA provision that allows adult children to stay on their parents policy until age 26. How much must he be paying to insure to so many kids?

Kynzie is wearing pants. That's all. lol

I don't think Josh and Anna ever had an issue with her wearing pants. This isn't the first time she has been seen in them.

On the Duggar tumblr, someone asks about the Kennedy Space Center photo, and why Jessa was holding the baby in the carseat, not Michelle. The owner said "Probably because the baby was her buddy."

Really? That's a good enough excuse? My little brother is about the same age as Jessa was in that picture, but I wouldnt dream of making him hold a six month olds carseat.

In regards to the Space Centre picture, I don't think Jessa was lugging the car seat round all day. It looks to me like they were just finding a way to pose the family so everyone would be visible.

I'm sure if asked it would be a shorter tunic dress and leggings. Anna does seem more practical with dressing her kids.

So JB had to weigh in on health care and compare his coverage (whatever that might be) to the Canadian system where (apparently) we have to wait for everything.

JB, let me tell you a thing or three:

Yes, we occasionally have to wait. If you are talking about ER service, we have a thing called triage. I'm sure U.S. hospitals have that as well. A heart attack trumps a sprained ankle, but both are covered 100% and nobody is turned away.

Sometimes one has to wait for a referral to a specialist. Specialists are special. Sometimes they are all booked up. So it goes. Again, if it is life and death - you move up the line.

I had cancer diagnosed in 2005. ER doctors misdiagnosed me, so pardon me if I'm not thrilled that in the U.S. some people have to rely on them as primary care providers. Once I was diagnosed, I had surgery within 2 weeks, chemo 6 or 7 weeks after that. By the end of my 6 months of treatment I was out of pocket approximately $50 for the prescription costs that weren't covered.

Pardon me if I am head cheerleader for socialized medicine.

BUT THEY'RE SO WELL-BEHAVED!!!

Josh has probably been thru "stay on message" boot camp for his job. Plus, you KNOW the FRC has tv on 24/7 monitoring stuff just like a Congressional office would. He's gotten OUT people. He probably has to read actual briefing papers and know how to argue them when challenged.

They will not just bring the "relevant kids" becasue Gothard ...I MEAN ATI/IBLP says families should be TOGETHER at all times. It makes them "close" you see.

Jim Bob whole talk about healthcare was ignorant and outdated. His blue cross policy that he signed up for that said kids or no kids does not exist anymore! Now they want the names and health conditions of the kids, usually the details of the births(C-sections, complications). I know my old blue cross now charges per kid after 2 kids.

The Canada comparsion just shows how ignorant he is or how he just hears a story and repeats it without doing any research himself. I remember 2 moms on a forum discussing their kids broken arm stories. The mom from Canada had a 20 minute ER wait and had the Orthopedic Surgeon see her child in the ER and set the arm and the cost was $0 and the total time in the ER was less then 4 hours. The American mom spent 10 hours in the ER a $1000 deductible and had to wait 3 days for her child to see the orthopedic surgeon.

My grandmother and aunt died of ALS and I would cry to see the choices and standard of care in Canada for ALS compared to the US(which greatly varies do to where you live and how much money you have). Jim Bob try waiting 12 weeks to see a specialist here in the US to be told you are going to die! or having to drive 8 hours to see the closest specialist.

Jim Bob and Michelle had a major health crisis with Josie, instead of talking about miracles, why can't they open up about the lack of a closer NICU and specialists? Not everyone could re-locate like they did. or about how much it cost for Josie's first 6 months of care. Does Jim bob think Canada makes premature infants wait for care? of course they don't. I would be willing to bet that Americans in 2014 wait a similar amount of time to see a specialist as Canada. I know here neurology is 4+ months, rhematology is 6+ months out and forget about mental health it is a 3 year waiting list!

I am suffering from a mysterious stomach/digestion issue which has plagued me for months and has had an impact on my life, but is in no way life threatening. I had to wait 2 months to see a local GI and I've been on the waiting list for a consult at Mayo Clinic for 4 months - no appointment yet! People who say you don't have to wait to see a specialist in the US are on crack. If it's not an emergency*, you're generally going to wait (at least to see someone good).

Contrast that with my MIL, who had a spot discovered on her lung during another test - back for a CT scan that day. got in with the pulmanologist the next business day, he wanted her to see the surgeon which we did about 2 days later, surgery for lung cancer the next week. It's frustrating for me to have to wait, but I understand why I have to.

Daaaaamn. I wanna move to Canada.

ER doctors also misdiagnosed Boy R&M when he got diagnosed initally. It was lots of fun going for a bone marrow check 3 months after the ER visit and having a doctor say, "Um, R&M? Remember when the people in our ER told you your little boy didn't have leukemia? Yeah, about that..."

I actually have excellent insurance for Boy R&M, and we still spent $20,000 in the first year of his treatment alone. Even now, there are still lots of nasty little out-of-pocket costs. To this day, we are having to fight the doctors in order to get decent pain meds that help control the side effects.

Sounds like the system took really good care of you, glad to hear it.

I can't seem to make it through the HP interview, but I will say this. John David is a doufus who clearly hasn't seen many old movies.

I don't think she was criticizing the movie, she was just pointing out how ignorant John David is. He is an adult and so sheltered that he think that when his mom and grandparents were of dating age Hollywood showed a Duggar style courtship.

Good question, JustMe. I wonder if M4 will be born at their home in DC. Aren't home birth laws there more strict than in Arkansas?

I like this movie.

I wasn't even aware that the Duggars watched movies, other than the crap that Kirk Cameron and other "Christian" filmmakers put out. Michelle claimed that the younger kids watch Disney movies sometimes, but I call BS on that, since there's always something in a Disney movie that fundies object to (that and they have partner benefits for gay couples). Older movies might not have lots of nudity, profanity, and blood, but there's plenty of sex and violence. What would the Duggars say about this:

Sexual innuendo! Drug references! Jazz! Dancing! Sexy cartoon characters! Talking animals! Ambiguously Jewish parents! It's like a Gothard checklist for NIKE!
