What I think is hilarious is that it's the completely anti-government regulation, no controls on capitalism, libertarians on my Facebook page who are freaking out about this guy being fired for expressing his views.

Um..what do they think unfettered capitalism is, if it isn't giving bosses the right to fire someone for whatever reason they want.

I think some get that, so you have a group jumping to "how can you be so intolerant of him??? isn't tolerance what you're all about???" Equally head-desk worthy though.

Actually, Anderson Cooper answered that. He said he doesn't care what (Robertson) thinks or says (about gay people like him), as long as they don't interfere with his civil rights.

As a straight white female, I don't feel as comfortable saying that.

George Takei said the same thing.

I watched about 2 minutes if the show once, got bored and changed the channel, so don't really know what it's about. I'm a little concerned though that his being fired will cause some backlash from people who are on the fence about marriage equality. Especially people who are generally live and let live, but personally conservative.

I thought it was interesting on AC 360 last night that Dan Savage said that the race comments were worse than the homophobic ones (although I agree).

The homophobic stuff was really crude, but was ultimately his opinions and religious views. To a certain extent, Savage and Cooper didn't sound like they really expected any better from him.

The racist stuff, though, was just crazy. It's possible that the guy wasn't being malicious, but just has his head stuck so far up his ass that he really can't figure out that being a "redneck" was not the same as being black in pre-civil rights Louisiana, that he was completely blind to the racism all around him, that he has no idea that no black at the time could possibly tell a white man anything that sounded disrespectful without fearing for his life, and that he apparently hasn't had any real conversations with a black person since the 1960s if he can say that shit with a straight face.

And yes, we need a lesson in Constitutional Freedoms 101:

Freedom of speech means that no government or law can control what you say.

Freedom of religion means that no government or law can control what you believe.

A&E is not the government. It is a private media company. It will do whatever it wants, and will control its own brand and bottom line.

Remember TLC? They are also a private media company. They once had a show called "All-American Muslim". Now they don't. Did you protest that? Didn't think so.

I read where the rest of the family said they can't imagine doing the show without Phil. Good. I hope it goes off the air. Their 15 minutes should be UP. I'm tired of seeing their ugly mugs everywhere.

I still can't believe he said black people in Jim Crow Louisiana were happy and none of them were singing the blues back then. Tone-deaf much, asshole?

Phil Robertson is a rich, redneck homophobe. My Facebook friends just can't shut up about this. The comments are way beyond hateful. I just posted: "If you want argue about Phil Robertson from Duck Dynasty, do it on your timeline. I have zero tolerance for batshit crazy, hateful, homophobic comments I will delete you ass."

If the show is indeed over, it won't hurt the Robertsons at all. They were already rich prior to the show. But their asses would still be chapped because they are going to lose additional income. The wives of the sons will end up missing of some of the extra perks of the show. I remember when they went to the ACMs and walked the red carpet, they loved the attention.

I have to say if Phil and his sons believes everything in the Bible, he should have followed that verse about women being quiet and the Robertson wives should never been on the show at all and if they are going to believe everything in the Bible they should be lobbbying for rape victims to marry their rapists.

Okay, so Phil, in Godwining, describes Islam as something that's come up in the past 80 yrs? No Jesus? Jesus does exist in Islam....

It's clear he knows nothing besides the names of a few religions and some very inaccurate facts about them. Not to mention the terrible logic - has he forgotten that the "Christian" culture's response to Pearl Harbor was to drop two atomic bombs on civilians targets?

(snip)

I've followed the family here & there online and I'll tell you whose ass is probably really chapped: Miss Sadie, daughter of Willie. She's had her eye on a TV career, expressing an interest in competing on "Survivor" and other shows. Sharing second place: Mrs. Jep aka Redneck Barbie, Mrs. Jase the Songbird, and Master John Luke the semi-hottie.

The Chia Pet Duck Dynasty ad ran twice this morning on TV, typical stuff until the end, when Uncle Si says, "That's whut I'm talkin' about" and then fist-pumps and then bounces a little and make an "uum, uum, uum" sound with a peculiarly satisfied look in his eye. I'm telling you, Doug Phillips Is A Tool in all his cello sparkles didn't look as ... pleasurably satisfied, might we say? .... as did Silas, right there. And yet they continue to run the ad and I'm sure continue to sell the tar outta those silly things. SMH! :penguin-no:

Edited for clarity

So now there is a meme going around Facebook about this moron losing his job over his opinion but Oprah wants to kill all white people and won a Nobel Prize.

I must not have been paying attention when Oprah was out advocating genocide or winning Nobel Prizes.

What the what?! :pink-shock:

I wonder if this isn't a well orchestrated publicity stunt between A&E and the Robertson family. It couldn't have escaped American corporations' notice that conservative Christians are very susceptible to propaganda and claims of persecution. A famous individual can have believes that obviously counter anything Jesus taught as long as they are vocal about being Christians and other conservative Christians will go batshit crazy it someone dares to suggest that the famous Christian should be held to the same rules as everyone else.

The company gets more attention for a popular show. The emotion of the fans are rabid and they buy more merchandise around Christmas. After Christmas, the show brings Phil back on after he issues some sort of apology.

LOLZ

www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/12/20/duck-dyn ... porn-film/

The producer and creator of the A&E show “Duck Dynasty†once starred in a dark, homoerotic indie film about the gay porn industry called “The Fluffer.â€

BuzzFeed reported Friday that in 2001, Scott Gurney played a “gay-for-pay†meth addict who acts in erotic videos. The film premiered that year at the Toronto Film Festival.

“The Fluffer†revolved around the destructive relationship between Gurney’s character and a gay college student — played by Michael Cunio — employed to keep Gurney aroused on set during filming.

Just a side note. You can hide people from your newsfeed but keep them as a friend, you just need to go to their page to look at photos, rants, etc. It can help keep your blood pressure down

Now all the fans on Facebook are telling the Robertsons to just leave A&E and go to another network. I know zip about how the entertainment industry works, but I'm pretty sure the Robertsons can't just pack up their toys and go to another network(but the can pack up their toys and go home, and I'd be "happy happy happy" to see them do that!)There's probably some sort of non-compete language in their contract. Didn't TLC play the non-compete card with Jon Gosselin when he went off the rails?

Glenn Beck wants them on his network, apparently. Can you imagine how obnoxious that would be, though? Granted, I've never seen the show, but I've heard that the previous network held back on some of the religious stuff.

I've been surprised to see a few people I didn't expect supporting them on facebook. One girl posted a long rant about how we should be allowed to criticize gay people because it's sinful, etc. etc., but I know she has dated a trans guy before. Trans men are okay but gay people aren't, I guess? I mean, they are different things so it's not necessarily hypocritical, just surprising.

I'm no lawyer and I've never been closer to the entertainment biz than buying a movie ticket.

That said .... some radio talk show guys with lots of history in entertainment were opining that another network is going to gobble DD right up. I can easily see A&E collaborating with TLC or whatever the country music channel is now, to sell rights to future episodes etc. etc.

When as much money is involved in a franchise as there is in all things DD, the money-baggers will make it all work out.

Which means, sigh, we'll be treated eventually to Sade on Survivor, more of Redneck Barbie and Redneck Songbird and other Annoyances. Best news is: I won't have to watch any of them.

BTW, one of the hosts said they saw a very ordinary DD keyring on sale for $40. Original price? $100. Who the hotel buys this stuff? :wtf:

I just heart about the Glenn Beck wanting them on Blaze. I wonder if the DD guys would have issues with Mormons.

Sunshine Mary has a post about this up today at sunshinemaryandthedragon. She's upset that the media is bullying Christians. Some of her readers actually disagree with her in the comments section.

I tried to watch an episode of DD once and just couldn't get past the first 10 minutes. I don't understand the appeal. I guess I'm not into Redneck fundamentalist Christian humor. But, I don't understand why A&E would suspend him for proclaiming the views that have made their show so popular among a particular demographic.

He's coarse and appears to be an idiot, but he's just sharing his interpretation of the Bible. It's not like anyone would expect him to rally for same-sex marriage. His faithful viewers will still watch him. Most liberals will choose not to. A&E didn't accomplish anything.
