Phil Robertson (Duck Dynasty) goes on crazy homophobic rant.

Seriously, why are redneck shows so popular now? I don't understand it.

In addition to what the others said, I think there is also a poverty porn element to it. While they are not impoverished, many people on these types of shows are, and there is an element of "look at how backwards and funny their ways are" to it.

I'm sure fundies will cry persecution over this but I'm glad A&E are taking the stand that they won't support this sort of behavior in any way.

A relative of mine is already kind of crying persecution via Facebook. "So nobody can have an opinion anymore?!?!?!?" Well, yes, you can have opinions, you just probably shouldn't have public ones when you're the public face of a very large company. I'd like to ask her to go tell Saeed Abedini's wife all about how persecuted we Americans are, while her husband is locked up in Iran for his beliefs*. The Abedinis are local here so it's been a pretty big story for awhile.

*The Saeed Abedini story is something that I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about, so not trying to open a big 'ol can of worms.

If one of the real house wives went on a rant putting Christians in the same category as people who have sex with animals and they got fired for it the fundies would be applauding not going on about how no one can have an opinion anymore. But since it was one of them who got fired it suddenly because persecution.

That's true, those "Christians" claim persecution when they're called out on their hateful comments.

They definitely play up their "other-ness". Eating possum and skinning alligators. The show pretends to give you a peek into redneck culture, with the added bonus of not having to look at the poverty typically associated with redneck-dom.

If it was real it would be kind of fascinating, but since it is all scripted and fake, not so much.

Tim Bayly links to a story about it, but posts yet another "Men Only" warning. Apparently the women who read his blog don't even know what anuses are-- or if they do, they shouldn't!

What he said about pre-civil rights Lousiana is beyond ignorant. Are these same Christians who are defending him on his homophobia going to defend this as well.

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/tv ... 8406.story

In a quote that may raise even more eyebrows than his feelings about gays, Robertson claims he "never" saw black people mistreated during the pre-civil rights era in his home state, and strongly suggests that African Americans were more content under Jim Crow.

"Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotton with them. I'm with the blacks, because we're white trash," he said. "They're singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, ‘I tell you what: These doggone white people’—not a word!... Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues.â€

Did Phil Robertson not learn a damned thing from the Paula Deen brouhaha? What he said is just as offensive. No, black people did have things to complain about before the Civil Rights era. Not all African-American were happy singing darkies. They may not have complained much because they feared what would happen if they did.

Btw, I hate the term "godly".

Phil Robertson, you suck as a human being!

On the rare, unfortunate occasions I find myself reading the Bayly blog, I make it a point to read the "For Men Only" posts. I also want to send them and email that basically says "I'm a woman and I read a man's post. Nanananananaaaa, you can't stop me!" The arrogance is laughable.

I think Walmart is also selling Duck Dynasty nail polish and lip gloss. The Robertson family and Walmart - a merchandising dream made in heaven. :(

At least I've never seen Duck Dynasty condoms (Duck Dynasty Rubber Duckies :ew: ).

Oh the persecution front has already started on my fb feed.

Some of my favorite comments so far:

Phil is my favorite. I think it's outrageous that he's being punished for his OPINION. What happened to shows just putting the little disclaimer at the beginning stating that their beliefs aren't the beliefs of A&E???

What happened to freedom of speech? I don't like what white supremacists say, but they still have the right to speak their thoughts. I don't like what atheists say, but I support their right to freedom of speech, just as much as I do for all Americans. Seriously, what has happened to this country

Im afraid this will end one of the greatest shows of our era. A real show. A show that doesnt need the snookies and situations and all that other nonsense. I love DD and the Robertsons

It's such an elementary school mentality. It's his opinion! We're all allowed to have opinions no matter what they are!

Saying something like that will get most people fired from their jobs. They may not be "employees" but they can still be expected to act a specific way when representing the brand and station. Legally in the US, any place where company business is preformed is considered the work place. This would include the places where Duck Dynasty is filmed. Phils statements could make filming a hostile work environment and put A&E at risk of a lawsuit.

A&E suspended Dog the Bounty hunter too.....until he was reaallllllllly sorry...I mean until the media firestorm subsided. Then there was a second chance and all was forgiven. I expect the same thing to happen with Ducky Phil

I'm guessing he'll be back in time for a VSE for Valentine's Day. Because they probably have merchandise for that too.

I've never watched "Duck Dynasty," never been even vaguely interested in it. But they're everywhere. My local Walmart's photo store closed, and they replaced the area with a bunch of "Duck Dynasty" merchandise. It's ridiculous.

I have never like Phil Robertson. I do not understand his appeal. He has always rubbed me the wrong way. He never smiles, seems like he is in a constant bad mood, is extremely judgmental, and has made it clear on his show that he is a sexist. I do not blame A&E for suspending him. Phil Robertson said some rather effed up things about homosexuals, women, and minorities. It is sad to see so many people come out in support of the nonsense he said, and it only points out how much more we need to improve on when it comes to equality in many areas when I see so many running to validate Phil's ignorance.

I really look forward to the amount of bull crap about all this on Facebook. :| You know, all the people that apparently failed a basic government class because they have no freakin' clue about free speech and how it works.

I like Duck Dynasty because it's entertaining. What I don't like right now is the fact that the rest of his family didn't also leave to show support for their father. Contract or not, it wouldn't matter to me. If my family member got canned for their beliefs, and I shared those beliefs, I would say "See ya" to whomever did the firing. Otherwise, I'd be a hypocrite.
