McDonald's suggestion for getting through the holidays

I'm cynical enough to believe that the likely response from McDonald's corporate headquarters to this publicity will be to eliminate the financial advice, and leave wages untouched.

How high can wages for low-skill, entry-level positions go?

Is it realistic for all jobs to offer a "living wage", based on the cost of living in that area? Or, should companies be honest and admit that certain positions would be suitable for students or second incomes or those looking for a first job, but will not offer a living wage to support a family?

Do government benefits that help the working poor (such as food stamps) allow people to survive while allowing them to participate in the workforce, or do they subsidize large corporations that underpay workers?

In McDonald's case, yes. They wouldn't even have to raise prices to cover increased wages, and they'd still make an obscene profit.
