OT but links to the whole left-handed thing. My grandma was a primary school teacher and was also left handed. She once told her year one (I think!) class to "do exactly as I do" and subsequently the entire class wrote with their left hand :lol:

I mostly know about this because my mother's family has a large number of lefties who were forced to switch to their right in school. That said, there appears to be a good deal of medical and academic research on the impact forcing a child to switch handedness can have - apparently it can be associated with stutters and the like.

Harsh, but I'd be harsh towards a homophobic family member, too. I could see myself being angry enough to cut them off if they effectively made someone I love homeless.

Kicking out your dependent child for something they can't control is NOT on the same level as cutting off an independent adult because they chose to do something horrible.

ETA the handedness argument is used pretty often.
