CJane and porn addiction?

I've really been liking CJane's blog lately. She's just seemed happier and more authentic. But then...post after post about porn addiction? Does this seem really quite strange to anyone else?

A. Sexual 'sins' are considered to be 'the sin second to murder' in Mormonism. This includes masturbation and watching porn. Part of the annual (bi-annual?) process of qualifying for a temple recommend includes questions about 'purity'.

B. Utah (apparently) has the highest rate of downloading porn in the US.

C. I have read numerous accounts on both Conservative Christian and Mormon message boards where men who watch any porn at all are considered to be addicted.

It's not surprising at all.

It's not surprising at all, since as mentioned, Mormonism teaches that any sex other than what happens between a husband and wife is the sin second only to murder. There are plenty of Mormons who believe that if someone looks at porn once, that person is an addict, in the way that many believe that one drink of alcohol means someone is an alcoholic. Sometimes on Mormon message boards, there is a post from someone asking if they should divorce their porn-addicted husband, even if he only looked once.

Wow... wonder why Utah has the highest rate of porn use. Horny teens trying to avoid having sex with boyfriends/girlfriends? Frustrated married people who aren't sexually satisfied because they only ever have missionary-style quickies in the dark with their spouse and they want something more exciting? Long cold winters and boredom?

C.Jane's recent postings on porn addiction are a bit weird. I kind of wonder if she doing these postings to prove that she is a good Mormon. She has questioned Mormonism before and it seems that it caused conflict with her family.

I've really enjoyed the series too. I think regardless of anyones personal beliefs about porn or sex addiction, these honest stories have highlighted that it can indeed be a big issue in some families.

Cjane did say in the comments section of one of the stories, that she did distinguish a difference between, occasionally viewing porn and a compulsive addiction to it.

When a relationship is secure and loving, it can be a huge blow to find out that your partner has been engaging in behaviour that they have kept secret from you. Be it, secret credit cards, porn, gambling, drugs etc.

Even thought these stories have focussed on porn being the issue, I think the sense of betrayal on the part of the wronged spouse and the sense of embarrasment on the part of the "wrongdoer" is the bigger issue. Not the actual "sin".

Porn is SOOOOOOOO forbidden! Watching it is transgressive! It's the most forbidden transgressive thing EVAR! Let's all talk about how porn is easily gettable and the most illicit thing a person could EVER DO!

Given the above, I wouldn't be able to resist it either.

I think that's why I've found it so strange. Not the attitude about porn in general-I don't agree, but I guess I can understand it-but the unrelenting focus on it after she's spent the last couple of weeks looking generally more progressive.

I was never Mormon, but man does this hit a nerve. Even when I was fundie, I used to think that Christians were the most sexually deviant people in the world because the littlest thing sexually made them all out of whack.

I really don't get the "masturbation is a sin" thing. Wouldn't it be better for the fundies to rub one out in he prayer closet than to be overcome with lust the first time they leave the house and see a woman wearing...gasp...shorts! (clutches pearls) Actually, I have a kind of funny story. I grew up fundie lite catholic, with 2 older sisters, 1 younger sister, and 3 younger brothers. I moved in with my grandmother at 14, because I was a "bad influence". I got married at 21, the first of my siblings. My youngest brother was 13 at the time. My mother called me one day, very upset. She had walked in on my brother jerking off, and wanted me to talk to him, because I "had experience with sex addiction". I wish I was kidding. So I picked up my brother, and told him he's not a pervert, that everyone does it, and that he should do it in the shower with the door locked from now on. So, according to my mother, jerking off makes you a sex addict. Yeah...

I find it strange too. During the months leading up to the election she seemed a bit progressive and spoke out against Romney. She had some twitter fight with NieNie. For several months, I kept getting the feeling that she was planning to leave the LDS church. I think she got into fights with others in her family and she might be staying in the church mostly for family reasons. I think she is doing these speaking out against porn postings to appease her family and others in her community. I have grown to dislike most of the Clark family because of some of C.Jane's revelations. NieNie puts a lot of pride in her famiily being Mormon, but someone in her family is going to eventually leave the church. Maybe it will be C.Jane, but I think one of the grandchildren will leave. If it ends up being one of NieNie's kids, I can't imagine the fury Nie and Christian will release.

Also, if you've looked at it once you're already doomed to be addicted so you might as well continue and look at it as much as possible if you've slipped just once before!
