I read Summer With The Moodys last night. Sigh. I just hope she "dumbed" the book down to make it better for children. I hope she doesn't really have such a naive view of the world and the people in it. But I doubt it.

I downloaded it too, and completely agree. The widow lady who "knows" the Moody's are Christian because they are so nice??? The ice cream store clerk who says he knew Mr. Moody is "one of them" (Christian) because he's so patient waiting for his order???

Seriously Sarah? Do you really believe only Christians are kind and patient? What a slap in the face to your billions of fellow human beings who are not Christian (or maybe not your brand of Christian) but would happily help you if you needed it.

Remember, this is a woman who isn't permitted to read about non-Christian people in any sort of neutral way. So it's entirely possible she does think that only Christians are truly kind and nice people with good hearts. To her there's probably Christians and then "believers of false religions" who are either deluded or actively rejecting God, and she's only heard of them via her parents.

I have run across the thought that only Christians can be good people. It is often taught from the pulpit. The only way a person can be truly kind is with God's love.

In fact, at my cousin's fundy wedding the pastor flat out said in while he was preaching that my cousin and his wife cannot truly love each other, that it only comes from God.

I ran into a woman who I used to go to church with and she flat out said that only Christians can be good people. I corrected her.

Some of the most nasty, unforgiving people I know are Christians. On the other hand one of my dear friends who loves and supports me unconditionally is a conservative republican Christian.

Going to use the borrow function for the first time, I think....

Also, if you put "maxwell kindle books" into the Amazon search bar, the first cover that comes up is... quite defrauding.

I read the sample from the Moody book and it's kind of bleh. That would be fine except that it's also filled with punctuation and grammar errors. I'm no writing Nazi but even I could see obvious mistakes in sentence structure and places of awkward writing. Sarah's writing resembles those from nonEnglish speaking countries who've never left their homeland. They know how to spell and they understand basic sentence structure but they miss the "flow" of the language. The excuse is if one has never been with a native speaker, it's hard to write like one. I don't know what the Maxwells' excuses are.

I don't consider myself a good writer and I'm not a writing snob but it grates my ears to read the Maxwells' essays. I guess we can blame Teri for it. She's a decent writer and seemed to have failed to teach that to her children. I often wonder how much of it is the isolation her kids experience. They have no one to talk to but each other, nothing to read except the Bible and chosen Christian biographies. Not only does it stunt their emotional development, but I think it has crippled any academic potential they may nurture.

Same here.

What makes it worse is that Teri, Steve, Christopher and others spent hours each, editing her work! What on earth were they all doing?!

It reads horribly. And the content.... is very odd indeed. I do wonder what dreadful "Not All Fiction" parts Steve and Teri culled to make themselves look even less bad than they do. Sarah clearly writes as though it is normal for Mom to stay in bed (depressed?) for her own personal Time With The Lord while the rest of the family have Bible Time together. And the parents 'excuse' the kids from the breakfast table only for the kids to then do clean up while mom and dad chat about their plans for the day together!

And, back on titus2, yes indeed, what the hell must be up with the blog commenter and her 16-year old son that they are eagerly looking forward to the next book?!

I got a copy of that book a while back to do a series of blog posts on it... but I didn't know if anyone was interested in reading them.

I do kind of want to read some of the maxwell books on kindle... but then I would have to shell out actual MONEY for them... and I don't want to support their "ministry."

Look for a used copy on Amazon or Ebay. That's what I do in such situations.

I second the eBay recommendation. I bought their "Hearts" book there (actually ended up getting it free aside from shipping, since my copy of the book has... WINE STAINS on it)

Does anyone else remember when a Maxwell blog commenter asked "what books are you reading right now" and Steve replied with "Anna is reading an HTML book and Mary is reading one of the Moody books." I assume Steve thinks computer books are "safe" reading choices because they're just factual info about machines, no chance of their minds being tainted. But how depressing that the only approved fiction is something a family member writes.

I know! I have a whole stash of fiction that I would be happy to smuggle to the poor girl if I didn't think that she wasn't already brainwashed to immediately give it to her father.

It's awful. There's a lot of beige (and not just clothing-wise-- the plot, such as it is, is just so...blah). Lots of Scripture-quoting at random times, which kinda breaks up the action...such as it is. Everyone gets along, everyone is kind and considerate, and a sick pet is about the most drama in the book. And, yes, there is a burrito night.

I was going to write a review for Amazon, but can't bring myself to do it. The Moody books seem to be Sarah's whole purpose for existing (well, aside from cooking and cleaning and sewing and serving Ste...I mean, THE LORD). Yeah, the book is crappy, but at least she's doing *something* that seems to interest her and that she might actually think is "fun" (God forbid!). I'm sad for her; her options are so limited that I feel guilty snarking about her book.

Steve, on the other hand, is fair game.

Anyone want to post a few samples of the moodys?

You can download them for free from the products page at titus2.com.

If you want to re-post them here, you need to make some sort of commentary to comply with fair use rules.

The scripture quotes are weird. It looks as though they have been cut and pasted from the KJV, with the formatting (italicisation of certain words) left in. To a casual reader, it reads at first that Sarah has herself italicised those words for a particular Moody-related reason. But the reason never comes out....

I bet they form a secret message begging for help.

Maybe check PaperbackSwap.com as well? If I ever see these at the library's fundraiser sales, I'll grab them. Haven't seen them yet, although I do have a series of YA sci-fi books from the Moody Bible Institute or whatever it's called. Do we need a FJ library with traveling copies of the books or something?

I'd love to see a blog series about the books, or even a book-club type discussion here. I read the Kindle sample of Summer with the Moodys, and the logic fails are amazing. I can think of at least 3 reasons not to wait around with the dog before taking it home, and a couple of changes to make to the cast list, and that's without even reading the rest of the book.

Yeah, the thing is, I want to be able to read it on my kindle...

I did get one of the moody books on amazon. If anyone's interested, I'll start blogging about it, and leave space in the comments for other people to rewrite whatever scene is up for discussion... if anyone would be interested in that sort of thing?

Trynn, do you have amazon prime? If so you can borrow one Maxwell kindle book for free every month.

I just finished Summer With the Moodys" and my head is still reeling.

I love the idea of a book club for the Maxwell books.

We're in the process of starting a book club over in Worldly Distractions. The schedule is currently set up through July, but feel free to suggest the books for the next round of voting.

Steve Maxwell of Titus Two and ITonramp is a hypocrite! This week his Dad's corner talked about how in working for someone else you may be forced to do business with other companies who support ungodly causes like equal marriage or reproductive freedom thus, to stay morally pure you should work for yourself. Yet this asshat makes his money using Apple products (tons of them, tens of thousands of dollars worth) and Apple is a company very outspoken on marriage equality that offers domestic partnership benefits to employees and undoubtedly provides insurance that provides a variety of reproductive health services. Now he is now relying on Amazon which also offers equal benefits to LGBT employees AND it sells pornography! I actually pointed that out to him in a comment when the first kindle book came out but of course it was ignored. We all have our contradictions and there are other gripes I have with both of the companies I mentioned above but, given Steve's holier than though moralizing, his contradictions are both glaring and completely self-serving. UGH.

I had the same thought when they put the 1st ebook up on Amazon. Good for you for pointing it out to him, ncb.

I recall the Maxwells saying they would not post any links to Yahoo on their forums because they object to some of Yahoo's content. How is this different?

I've emailed the same thing about Steve's hypocrisy and likewise been ignored. He can't really do much about such comments posted in reviews on Amazon though, can he? Just sayin'
