On June 14 she gave birth to Nehemiah Schmidt. I'm happy for her.

Please tell me you're joking. She can't possibly have named the poor little mite Nehemiah Schmidt.

Oh god. Please tell me she didn't name that child this! This has to be a joke.

Wow, I just looked and they did actually name their child that. Poor kid.

OMG.

I was totally convinced it was a girl, first off, so the fact that it's a boy is surprising (to me). But then they name the poor child NEHEMIAH SCHMIDT?

I guess Schmidt isn't so bad as a middle name if it's in the family, but pair it with Nehemiah? Poor kid. On multiple levels.

As a non-American I feel like I'm missing something. Can y'all explain why in particular Nehemiah is bad?

John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt,

His name is my name too.

Whenever we go out,

The people always shout,

There goes John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt.

Dah dah dah dah, dah dah dah

(Instructions to singing this song: repeat until someone threatens physical harm to you.)

ETA: Also, it's usually sung as loud as possible.

Nehemiah just sounds like an old-fashioned name, while Schmidt is a last name that sounds weird as a middle or first name.

If you insert "Nehemiah" into the "Jingleheimer" spot, it scans quite nicely. Poor little kid.

It's the spelling that gets me. It just doesn't look nice, even on paper.

Poor kid.

Poor kid. How do you even say the first name? I feel like I'm saying it wrong.

I think it's Neh-him-aye-ah how I say it, ha. I quite like the name alone, but the entire thing is a bit... awkward.

Such an unfortunate choice in names. Blech. I hope Mom and baby are healthy and happy.

Whoa. That is insane!

I've always heard it pronounced Nee-uh-MY-uh.

At least he won't be in school with other kids or socialize with people outside his parent's specifically chosen circle - so he won't be teased.

Poor kid.

Time for a vote!

Which name is worse, Nehemiah Schmidt or Sauntina LaVerle?

I keep thinking her name's Satsuma, so I'm going for that...

That's the only way I've heard pronounced as well.

Every time I read Sauntina I automatically think of Santino from Project Runway many seasons ago, so that's definitely my fave. Methinks her parents did not intend for her name to trigger images of a gay male fashion designer.

That's the only way I've heard pronounced as well.

Back in the day when I had to memorize the books of the Bible, that's the pronunciation I was taught and the only one I've ever come across.
