Personally, I'm glad there are girls somewhere in the world who don't feel obligated to do any of this stuff.

I agree.

I thirdly agree. I'd rather a girl feel pretty like these do, and enjoy themselves, than chase the impossible thin/flawless skin/bog boobs/curvy butt/ perfect hair that is the ideal.

Seriously, it pisses me off that a guy can be normal with a shave and a haircut, but a girl needs a stylist, an eyebrow wax, a facial, and a million other things to be considered worthy of life. Fuck the patriarchal ideal of women's beauty. It's shit like that that spawns "The real housewives of fuckin wherever" and "Toddlers and Tiaras".

Women's appearance has long been the way to control them. From pants being illegal, to conformity of the fifties, to thinness.... control has always been an overriding factor in our lives. It's just that the disguise it comes in is constantly changing.

I know it is shallow and negative to focus on looks but really the acne/teeth/dirtiness/frizzy hair and wild eyebrows are something. The worst part is that all of these features could be improved upon with very little cost. Good acne creams, teeth whiteners, soap, hair care products and tweezers are readily and cheaply available. With a little effort (and maybe a touch of makeup) those girls could all look 100% better.

I dunno, acne treatments don't always work for the most stubborn kinds of acne. When it gets really bad, I can end up looking like the world's stupidest supervillain- Captain Zit. And I do have good acne creams- it's just that for one, bad acne runs on both sides of my family (my mom is in her late forties and still has trouble with it), and two, my medication causes breakouts. I have done pretty much everything short of taking Acutane to control it, and while in recent months I've been able to control it fairly well, it doesn't always work right.

That said, I've gotten very good at using makeup to conceal them, and usually it's not too noticeable unless I'm having a particularly bad breakout. Also, Neutrogena's Grapefruit cleansing cream is amazing, and it's not all that expensive. Eyebrows, though, they aren't that hard to pluck- you really can do something about the epic unibrow.

Put me in the agreement camp too. If that's how they want to look, more power to them. As long at that is how they want to look and not how their parents are forcing them to look. It's not their job to look perfect, spend money on things they don't want to spend money on, and spend time doing things they don't want to do simply to fit into modern standards of what is acceptable and attractive.

ETA: It's also not their job to do exactly what their parents say either. Basically, as long as it is their choice then I think it's all good.

I personally think they should be allowed the option of life long acne scars or some good skin care. As it stands they don't have a choice in any of it. I can wax, pluck and do as I will.I know I have choices. These girls are unaware of any choices. Their mother cares for herself very well with regards to her physical being (fashion sense aside). Her teeth are clean, she peddles her work out programs and her skin is clear. I'd like the daughters to have informed options.

When my DD had acne that could be treated medically I made the choice as a parent not to leave her scarred. Was I so wrong in imposing my standard on her? Or did I do my best as a parent who had a choice of a simple medical option? As it stands she owns the few acne scars she has. If I asked her today if she wanted more, and would live with more, I know what her answer would be. No women choses to be disfigured if she has another option.

Add me to the list of those who agree. Like I said before, these young ladies look totally normal to me. I don't have the money or the patience for half of the crap expected of me as a woman.

I don't think anyone's arguing that they shouldn't be allowed the choice to do as they please, or that their parents shouldn't help them in the endeavor, if able, it's a matter of people having the attitude that 'you must look like such and such to be acceptable.' Some people, even after doing all they can with what they have, still don't meet the standards because not only does money make a difference, your genetics do too.

Why in heaven's name would you walk barefooted in that area? Especially hiking down into the weeds to pick flowers.

I don't have pet fundies like some do. These girls seem happy in the way a naive 10 year-old might. I guess it's better than being miserable and stuck at home, but I really can not see any of them ever transitioning to adulthood. I hope their dad leaves them a decent inheritance because none of them will ever work or get married. Their parents have really failed them by keeping them as perpetual children. Their apparent happiness doesn't make up for that. I wonder if they will raise their sons differently, but they're still too young to tell.

I referenced a medical issue. I personally feel the parents have an obligation to provide dental care, and medical care, even if that includes dermatology. Their mother has a business that revolves around appearance. Why is she allowed choices her girls can't have? Why should I feel guilty since I used readily available medical care to prevent disfigurement of my minor child? It had nothing to with contemporary bounds of attractiveness. It was a means to prevent disfigurement. These women deserve a consideration. Mossy teeth don't get better, they lead to decay, infection, halitosis, jaw problems all kinds of stuff. Why shouldn't they be educated about dental hygiene and instructed how to perform it? Why can't they access medical care that may limit disfigurement due to acne? I don't care if they look like something off a fashion mag.. I care that their parents access responsible medical options.

I don't think their parents want them to grow up. I don't know how the parents did it, but they have managed to stop them from developing emotionally/socially past childhood. It is creepy.

I agree, I think reality will hit them hard, especially as their parents age. I doubt any one of the boys will make enough to support his sisters, if they remain unmarried.

I concede. You shouldn't feel guilty at all, and I agree with you that their parents have an obligation to provide the care you listed. This issue tends to put me on the defensive I guess because it's so closely tied to social constructs.

Maude, I loves ya. Concession isn't the issue. I merely expressed how I handled an issue. Dental care is important, I was blessed with straight teeth and bad enamel. They look good, but hurt like hell. My dental coverage was crap, it was cheaper to take my kid to the free clinic, but her teeth got cleaned, coated and extracted (big head small mouth). And when I saw she didn't inherit my complexion I did what I could. Thats all I ask of anyone. These young women do not deserve less.

Thanks, I just didn't want there to be any animosity between us. I enjoy reading your posts because you have some perspective that I, as a younger person, do not. :)

Experiencedd there are some dental toothpastes that you can use to help with the pain. I use a proenamel toothpaste then i coat my teeth in a toothpaste my dentist gave me. It's like 20 bucks a tube but it lasts a long time.

Someday I just know I'm going to read a news blurb like this:

Fundytown, USA,

Today at aproximately 12:37 a group of 7 siblings, all under the age of 29, was struck and killed by a freight train as they posed for photography along a busy set of train tracks.

"I just don't understand," said Keneniah Smith, a surviving older sibling, "Mark 11:23 says that by faith we can throw mountains into the sea. I truly believed that my siblings were genuine men and women of God--why couldn't they stop a freight train by faith alone?"

"Unfortunately, this kind of thing is becoming more common," said Mark Thompson, a public relation spokesman for Union Pacific, "We've seen a significant uptick in religiously fundamental people being involved in railroad accidents. We believe this correlates with the increasing popularity of Christian homeschooling. Apparently they believe that momentum and velocity are "just theories" and the danger presented by moving trains is beyond their abilities to conceptualize."

Seriously, fundies. Stay the fuck off the train tracks. People die this way, and train crews have their lives messed up because of their stupidity.

They seem to live in a nice area, surely there are plenty of other places to take photographs without putting their lives in danger.

They did mention the GAPS diet in the same post. Might be part of the reason. The other reason being they're health nuts anyway.

Completely off topic but yesterday a man between the ages of 40-50 was run over by a train not 2 miles from my home. The police believe he was struck from another train sometime before the second train. http://www.krdo.com/news/31122619/detail.html

Just google man killed on train tracks and just see how many hits (no pun intended) you get. Way too many. :(
