Her message is just that she owes her life to Jesus (of course) and that her life hasn't come without disappointments but that she is sometimes taken aback by moments of overwhelming (her term) gratitude. I think she is one of the more genuine fundies, which probably is what scared the shit out of Stevie and Christopher.

She had a teaching job in China and returned about a year ago -- I don't remember how long she was gone. Upon her return, she was soon offered a job with Bill Gothard (ATI) and she works fulltime for him. Squicky, for sure, but at least she's got a job and isn't a SAHD.

I like that she is stylish yet modest -- not a thing wrong with that. She seems to have good taste. It makes me sad to think she would REALLY like to be married (she's got to be about 30 I'd guess) and that nothing seems to be happening for her in that arena. She has two brothers that she's watched get married and start families and I think it is probably hard for her to watch her friends getting married, etc.

BUT her faith is strong (or so she says, and I tend to believe her).

BTW, love the curling iron on the counter behind her. Ha ha! I didn't realize people still used those!

Oh gosh, I missed that. I scorched my hair, and sometimes burned the tips of my ears back in the 80's with those things.

I was busy checking out her lamp shade and bed spread. Very passionate looking color for a (I assume) virginal young lady. :o

Oh, I noticed the lampshade and bedding too! She's got a nice set-up there should she, um, desire to entertain. LOL! It is so clear she wants a partner!

Thanks, Wondering!

So it is Bill Gothard she works for? I thought she wrote that she worked for a small private Christian accounting firm - is that just code for ATI or owned by them or something? Disappointing 'cause I did not realize she was that closely linked to the cult.

I don't think we know much about her breakup with Christopher. The Maxwells deleted every trace from the blog and thanked God for the experience; Sara deleted her blog and started again.

We do know that Sara had a very bad break up a year or so later, with an unknown fundie man. She raised issues about their relationship, he called a family meeting where he told her they needed to slow things down; by the time she got home that day he had called her father to break things off. She became a bit stalkerish and was asked to have no further contact with the family and then Praise God! she was offered a job at Gothard Headquarters and then sent to China. It was speculated on here that no 2 must have been fundie royalty for them to do that.

It's been discussed in prior threads here. It isn't very clear, but I think the Maxwells called it off. I think she was too radical for him, even though she could be spotted in the occasional frumper. You can search the archives here for Sara Smith and Christopher Maxwell and probably come up with the story. It was a few years ago.

(and OMG, I am jumping for joy -- I've just become "I AM The Sin In the Camp" from being just a lowly "Frumper Lover"! Woot! Although I will always love my frumpers!).

I remember reading the Maxwell post about the break up. From what I recall, I actually thought they handled it pretty well. The post was quite respectful of the both of them, and they didn't hide it - unlike some blogs where you don't figure things out until the blog is scrubbed of all references/pictures. The Maxwell post basically said "we didn't feel this was God's will so we ended it." I remember thinking that it was good that they did and that they were up front it, because so much of the courtship things is all about being perfect perfect perfect, and very few people admit to broken courtships/engagements. Plus, when all you do is scrub the blog of the pictures and references, people feel really free to speculate all kinds of wild things.

She's way too cute for the Maxwell's.

She IS way too cute for the Maxwells. But I get the feeling she and Melanie would have been good friends had she had to join the club. Melanie has a good sense of style, too -- her skirts are just too long and she doesn't wear jewelry.

There is something about her that's a little crazy to me. I think that the men in her life saw it too, so we now know what's down with crazy women who won't "keep sweet". They are "allowed" to live their lives as missionaries, in areas where they can do the least amount of harm to the women to tow the line.

But they are not allowed to marry....

Yes, she does have a sparkle in her eye and you can sort of tell is tempted to say things she knows she "shouldn't" among the fundie crowd. Can't quite put my finger on it. But I like her. I would love to get her out of the cult and give her a glass of wine and let her talk!

She has a photo of her dog titled, "my baby". Methinks perhaps she idolized her dog too much?

For the record, I adore my cats. They are my children.

Edited to add: She's quite the eager beaver, isn't she? Seven minutes of trying to convince us that she believes that God is all she needs. The lady, she doth protest too much.

Agreed! One drink and she'd tell all.

Now...how do we make that happen?

I just wonder if Stevie doesn't secretly follow her blog. Just to make sure she's not out there blaspheming his family. She's got a lot of spunk for a fundie. "Knocks your socks off" is considered pornography in Steve's kingdom, so he's sure lucky she didn't enter into the family with that potty mouth of hers!

I bet she didn't want to wear the matching frumpers to the conferences and she probably would have tweezed the youngest Maxwell girl's eyebrows. I still say my brow guy would have a field day with her. Alas, she wouldn't be allowed to visit him because he's gay and super proud! I love him. He's the best brow guy ever. Gay men know how to make you look good!!

So did she call the whole thing off or did Stevie, sorry I ment his son get cold feet?

After a lot of discussion, Christopher ended the engagement feeling that god was not leading the way. The families were, at one time, great friends and the courtship was considered a good thing for all. I think she was, and still is, far to independent for the Maxwell's, especially Christopher.

Christopher is the most like Steve and he needed a wife that will not raise a question to anything he deems to be right. A wife who will sit quietly, by his side, and pray when he's upsetting her and never say a word. Speak when spoken to type. How different could the two women he courted be?

I read some of her blogs on her trip to China. It looks like she had a wonderful time there! I liked that she visited her students' homes and they took her around Beijing. She also appeared to have walked around the city with a boy?! I don't know, maybe it was a relative....? Anyways, it's easy to see why the Maxwells and her may not have seen eye to eye. I can't imagine the Maxwells approving of any of their daughters going off alone to a foreign country. Nah, I can't imagine they'd let anyone go there alone. Really, despite her despair at not getting married, I think this young lady lucked out. She got to go places few in her circle have ventured, plus she did it on HER terms and in HER way.

So, wait... people don't use curling irons anymore?

I guess not but if you want you can bring your curled hair over to my covered wagon and we can curl our hair together while watching the dinosaurs discover America.

Okay, I'll be honest, I do still own 3, yes THREE, curling irons (two full-sized barrels and one mini), and a full set of hot rollers. But that's just because I hate to throw anything out. Landfills, you know. AND, they all come in really handy when I have to attend a theme party.

So, if you need a curling iron, I'm your "go-to" gal! :)

I've never heard of this Sara/Chris thing, and I've been reading there for a while! Tell me all the juicy deets! (or point me to where I can find it!) I'm intrigued!
