"Trump's Fair Jury"

The first of Donald Trump’s four criminal trials began with jury selections in New York City today. Twelve jurors and six alternates will be chosen from hundreds of New Yorkers with about 500 being called each day and 100 brought into Judge Juan Merchan’s courtroom at a time. This is going to take some work…and time.

The judge will try to seat a fair jury. The prosecution will try to root out any Trump sycophants. The Trump defense team will try to seat cultists. If a fair jury is seated, expect Trump to attack it on social media as unfair. You can also expect Trump’s cultists to try to out the jurors and threaten them on the dark web. They’ll work to dox them to violent MAGAts. There will be a lot of wink-wink, nudge-nudge, here’s their addresses.

So far, more than half of the first group of 96 potential jurors have been excused for saying they can’t be fair and impartial.

I don’t like Donald Trump. There’s no hiding that. But disliking or liking someone doesn’t mean a person can’t be fair. In a case like this, I would definitely hear the arguments and how the prosecution believes the law was broken and how the defense believes it wasn’t. Though I’m pretty sure if I was called that I’d be kicked out pretty quickly.

Trump definitely paid a porn star to be silent about their one night of Vegas raw-dogging, but that’s not the crime.

Trump was charged last April (I was there) on 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree, a felony. The charges have to do with the way that Trump allegedly concealed “hush” money payments before the 2016 presidential election. Those included $130,000 that Trump’s then-attorney Michael Cohen paid to porn star Stormy Daniels, who claims she had an affair with Trump, which he has denied unconvincingly. Payments to others allegedly were part of a scheme in which the National Enquirer paid former Playboy model Karen McDougal $150,000 for her story, then canned the story to help Trump. That is part of a “catch and kill” scheme in which the Enquirer would buy up embarrassing stories to suppress them. Cohen was then to reimburse the publication for the payments, although that never happened.

The crime, according to prosecutor Alvin Bragg, is that Trump tried to conceal the payments in Trump Organization business records. According to the indictment, Cohen was reimbursed via checks processed by the Trump Organization, but they were disguised as payments for legal services under a retainer agreement that did not exist.

Cohen used his own money to quiet these women, and the reimbursement from Trump was listed as a legal service. When he was president (sic), Trump denied knowing what the payments were for. The defense’s best argument here may be that Michael Cohen was performing a legal service by paying Stormy Daniels not to speak publicly about having sex with Donald Trump and informing the world that his penis looks like an itty bitty tiny gross orange mushroom…which she ultimately did.

Pardon me while I point out the hypocrisy of paying women to stay silent about extramarital affairs to win an election, then later cry that suppressing the story about Hunter’s laptop was some sort of evil plan to win an election.

It may take a few weeks to get a jury but I think they can get a fair one in New York City. Sure, it’s a place that overwhelmingly voted against Trump twice, but I think there are plenty of people there with open minds willing to hear the case out. You don’t have to like Trump to find him innocent.

This is the weakest of the four cases and if Trump is found guilty, I wouldn’t expect a harsh punishment. The only guarantee here is that when it’s over, at least half the nation will be pissed off.

I may be one of them.
