He’s probably trying to embrace his derogatory “Cancun Cruz” nickname and attempting to create a “Dark Brandon” avatar for himself— and failing miserably.

I'd almost feel sorry for Ted Cruz over stunts like this because he tries so hard and fails so miserably.  However, Ted is just such a jerk that any sympathy instantly disappears.  I love this line from Matthew Dowd:  "I worked with Ted Cruz ... There was a common expression about Ted Cruz. Why do people take such an instant dislike of Ted Cruz and the answer is it saves time.
