@Palimpsest thank you for that mystifying quote. "Accomplisher of difficult projects that move a merchant's success needle into burst mode." Wtf. It's like a string of business buzzwords from 20 years ago.

And this is how the Maxwells pimp out their boys. He's got a house! Your quiver will have a roof over their heads! Now come marry him!

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a house which he owns free and clear, must be in want of a wife.

That's a seriously nice starter home, though. John's was much more of a fixer-upper.

I'm curious what they do with their savings while they're waiting to purchase a home. Do they stuff $100 bills into old socks and stash them in the back closet? Leave it in a savings account? Purchase Index funds? Mutual funds? T-Bills?

I don't think buying a house to rent out is a bad idea.

Since he doesn't need the monthly rent money to pay a mortgage, he can save it or invest it.  Being a landlord can provide a nice monthly income.

He and his brothers seem to be fairly handy, so they can do most repairs themselves.

Tbh, I think this is smarter than buying houses and letting them sit until a bride comes along, like his brothers did.

IIRC, Joseph did rent out his house between the time when EM took back that piece of her heart, and when he married Elissa. It seems like John hurried to find a house and make it livable once he started dating Chelsy.

I agree that there must have been a family loan, that Jesse will now be repaying from the rental income.

@Koala, a single man living alone might discover quite accidentally what wonderful things his hands can do, say, in the shower or when he alone at night in bed.  That's why the Maxboys can't live out of Dad's and Mom's house until they are married.

Since he doesn't have to share a bedroom anymore in the Maxwell house (since he is the only unmarried brother left), he may have recently been able to 'explore' more, and maybe now wants a wife more desperately than ever, hence the house.

The first thing I thought when I read the blog: "those poor girls!".  They see their brothers being allowed to buy houses and marry and live their lives, and there is a strong chance that they never will, at least while Steve is still alive and sets the courtship rules.  Which means it is doubtful that they will ever have kids of their own.  Sarah helped to rear Jesse and is probably like a sister-mom to him, but he is allowed to grow and do things that she can't.  I have so much sympathy for her.

It isn't "like a string of business buzzwords from 20 years ago."  It is a string of meaningless buzzwords from 20 years ago.  That is when Steve got fired, a golden handshake decided to set up his own family business.

I thought Steve and Teri  used it as office space.  I don't remember it being a rental.  I could certainly be wrong.  It was in a rather dreadful condition when Joe bought it.

John and Joe are good with renovations.  I have no idea about forgotten Jesse.

:brainbleach:

But yes. And power to him.

Sarah has always neglected Jesse in her blog posts.  We have no idea who Jesse is - except that slightly chubby bespectacled nerdy Maxwell who has the initiative to clean up a woodpile.

He is probably grateful.  I've always wanted Jesse to do a runner.

I don’t get the point in buying a house he’s going to rent out. And where do they get the money to buy these houses? I’m doing something wrong with my life.

No, you're doing something right in your life.  If you believe in God, would you use His name to scam people?  To put fear in people in the name of God?  To take away your children's free will in His name and tell others to do the same with their children?  These kids have worked all their lives in that business.  They got paid since they were little.  That's how they could afford houses.  All the money in the world isn't worth doing what they did to their children and who knows how many others who follow them.  I'd rather have a mortgage in this life than deal with that kind of judgement in the next life.

The Maxwells girls will never get married... There's no way in hell Steve is gonna approve a husband for any of his girls.

It's actually a great investment for Jesse.  He gets to live at home in Maxhell rent free, and meanwhile will be earning a nice side income from the house.  Plus there are great tax advantages to owning rental property.  I own several rental properties and wish I had started sooner.

In other Jess news - I follow him @bassplayer_7 and Joe on Twitter and today I got a notification that Jess liked a tweet!!!1!!1

It was basically in response from a guy in Germany called David @mannersd who is part of the Magento programing stuff tits2 is involved with.

David likes a glass of grape juice or eleventy and has admitted it is a problem as he doesn't know when to stop, so tried controlled drinking -two drinks  at the Magento after parties. This worked until in 2017 when he got completely pissed at an event in 2017 - he goes onto say nothing bad happened but it ruined the next day - it's called a hangover mate. He admits he likes a drink and a dance.

Though I'm slightly snarking, heads up to David to realising he thinks he has an issue at after parties.

So Jess chimes in regarding the evil 'rock and roll' music with a 'beat':

My main thought is that it should be a reasonable volume to facilitate networking.

So Joe and Jess are getting out there a bit more.

Teri's child interweb protection stuff must be burning a hole in her frumper...

My feelings exactly. They want a man like their father, and I doubt their are many out their.

Through the comments, we learn that Jesse and Sarah are the only lefties of the family. Melanie, NR-Anna, Elissa and Chelsy are not, but Gigi is.

Even if he's not in a relationship now, I reckon he will be soon... or he may just be in a get-to-know-you phase. When you look at John and Chelsy's page on The Knot, they first met/spoke in April and officially began the relationship seven months later...

He may rent it out for a year or two but probably not for much longer.

About the money thing: it's been mentioned before on here that Leavenworth property seems to be very cheap. In addition, the sons tend to buy fixer-uppers, which would make them cheaper. Jesse doesn't appear to have bought a fixer-upper, but he may have gotten a good deal if he approached the owner before it was listed.

And it will be damn sad when he does get married and those girls are left behind. Surely their leghumpers must notice this? It's just such a big contrast to all our other fundies (bar the weird anomalies like the Arndts; Jana is unusual in her family but she does have sisters who are married, so for her it may be a personal choice, plus she's eight years younger than Sarah). If this was a "normal" fundie family and the daughters had married at 23, say (I never thought I'd put 'normal' and 'fundie' into the same sentence), Sarah would probably have 7/8 kids by now, Anna would have at least one or two, and Mary may not yet be courting but would be looking to within the next year.

I honestly don't know what to think about the Maxwell daughters. Whilst most of me agrees with the general FJ consensus, a small part of me still has some hope. Even if Sarah married at 40, in four years' time, she could still have one or at a push two kids. Honestly, though, Anna and Mary are the best bets. For Sarah to suddenly have her own life and family at 40 would be a big shock to her. There are many women who have their first kids at that age, sure... but they will have had several relationships by then, will have lived away from their parents for a substantial period, will have held down a job or two, will have been regularly socialising with friends doing all sorts of things, not just out for a coffee and fellowship.

I feel so sorry for Sarah Maxwell. It must be difficult seeing all her brothers get married and she's over here in her mid 30's, probably never even having Christian side hugged a boy. I don't understand Steve's problem, surely there are some God fearing fundie dudes out there looking for wives? Or is he convinced that Jesus Christ Himself isn't good enough for her?

If/when Jesse does marry, would Sarah be able to have his room for herself or will all three daughters still share a room with bunk beds?

More like:

Teri has clinical depression and is barely functioning, so it's up to Sarah to be her dad's "hostess" and run the household because god forbid a man step up and do the housework and such.

Steve is a pathological narcissist and control freak, and one way of exerting control is isolating and stunting his daughters.

Sarah has so internalized learned helplessness from these factors that she has never been able to take any real initiative to change her situation.

Alternatively, Sarah never wanted marriage or to pump out kids, and keeps using "just waiting for the right guy!" to stall and not have to live that life.

Sorry, off topic but I can’t find anything talking about it on the main page: what are the emojis covering some posters avatars? Most are faces but one looks like a waffle.

It's an option to add your "mood" to your profile/avatar. @Destiny posted about it here and explains how it works:

We had them once before, but had to stop using the feature. So, this is kind of a second try. "Waffle time" is a fun option, because it's kind of an ambiguous mood, or maybe the poster is just hungry! :)

Steve will never allow his “young ladies” to marry and have children because the children will not be Maxwells. They would be Smiths or Browns or Whatevers, but not Maxwells and Steve is obsessed with his brand, whatever that is. Even if the husbands took the Maxwell name the children would never be true Maxwells. I don’t think Steve would pay enough dowry to satisfy Mr. Smith, Brown, or Whatever for the grandchildren to take the Maxwell name. Additionally the husbands would be under Steve’s authority and would be beholden to him for the rest of their lives. I just don’t see that happening. I don’t think the girls would be comfortable with that either.

This is a much classier way of phrasing it than my initial reaction: "Jesse's got a jack shack!"

But I mean. Moving a "success needle into burst mode"—it's no exploding bratwurst, but only by a small number of degrees.

I wouldn't wish Maxhell on most fundie girls, but I can see Jesse with Nurie Rodrigues. At least Nurie would get to live in a nice house. And wouldn't it be fun for the Maxwells to have JillRod as an in-law? :pb_twisted:
