Hey, @Destiny, I know it's a few pages early for it, but maybe we could start a new thread soon, and call it: Supposed Kelly thread - where trolls come out to play.

Lots of sarcasm in this post.

And lots of sarcasm in this one too ...

So I get my news mostly from AP, Reuters, the NYT, the Washington Post, the BBC, and the Guardian.  Cor blimey!  All my sources are controlled.  Eh, I kind knew the BBC was Commie and controlled by ebil American liberals.  As for the Guardian - there is no hope!

Apparently only Otter has the "uncontrolled" sources.  The only ones in the world!

Otter, dearie.  From which country are you claiming to originate from this time?  Come on, sweetie.  I'm sure it will be good.  And I bet it won't be Uzbekistan.  :laughing-rolling:

http://foreignpolicy.com/2017/10/23/an-old-colonel-looks-at-general-kelly/

By Col. Robert Killebrew, U.S. Army (Ret.)

Not all the people who take issue with Kelly are civilians.

Quote

So you want to be a career soldier? Good for you. But remember that the longer you stay in uniform, the less you will really understand about the country you protect. Democracy is the antithesis of the military life; it’s chaotic, dishonest, disorganized, and at the same time glorious, exhilarating and free — which you are not.

After a while, if you stay in, you’ll be tempted to say, “Look, you civilians, we’ve got a better way. We’re better organized. We’re patriotic, and we know what it is to sacrifice. Be like us.” And you’ll be dead wrong, son. If you’re a career soldier, you may defend democracy, but you won’t understand it or be part of it. What’s more, you’ll always be a stranger to your own society. That’s the sacrifice you’ll be making.

Quote

There’s been a lot of commentary about the general’s attitude toward civilians who hadn’t sacrificed — who weren’t of the “one percent” who had — and it seems to me that most of it misses the point. Masha Gessen’s New Yorker article, “John Kelly and the Language of the Military Coup,” comes close, given President Donald Trump’s tendency to hire retired generals who complement his own authoritarian leanings. Certainly we need to be alert for the next three years — having at Trump’s elbow a retired general who disdains civilians should raise some concerns.

Quote

But the larger point that strikes me, as a retired infantryman, is the self-pity in the general’s tone. Look at us; we’ve made sacrifices that you don’t appreciate. The only good American is one in uniform, or, ultimately, the ones under tombstones in Arlington. Sadly, this kind of sad, pitying flag-waving impresses too many of my fellow citizens the same way that the insubordinate Douglas MacArthur did in the 1950s — and MacArthur is said to be a favorite of Trump’s.

Quote

Being part of the “one percent” doesn’t make us any more entitled than any other citizen. And while we’re happy that the public respects military service, too much respect makes us a little uneasy, for the reasons the old colonel said. We are privileged to serve, not the other way around.

Quote

But that odd press conference has exposed Kelly’s emotional, personal disdain for the citizens he served in uniform and still serves in a sensitive political post. His remarks lead me to wonder if he really understands that soldiers are the servants of democracies, not some special race apart. A MacArthur or a George Patton, disdainful or ignorant of democracy but close to the president is dangerous to the Republic and is unbecoming his distinguished service in a profession that doesn’t need anyone’s pity.

How about Kelly - singing Disorder in the House. Love me some Zevon.

Quote

Disorder in the house
The tub runneth over
Plaster's falling down in pieces by the couch of pain

Disorder in the house
Time to duck and cover
Helicopters hover over rough terrain

Disorder in the house
Reptile wisdom
Zombies on the lawn staggering around

Disorder in the house
There's a flaw in the system
And the fly in the ointment's gonna bring the whole thing down

The floodgates are open
We've let the demons loose
The big guns have spoken
And we've fallen for the ruse

Disorder in the house
It's a fate worse than fame
Even the Lhasa Apso seems to be ashamed

Disorder in the house
The doors are coming off the hinges
The earth will open and swallow up the real estate

I just got my paycheck
I'm gonna paint the whole town grey
Whether it's a night in Paris or a Fresno matinee

It's the home of the brave and the land of the free
Where the less you know the better off you'll be

Disorder in the house
All bets are off
I'm sprawled across the davenport of despair

Disorder in the house
I'll live with the losses
And watch the sundown through the portiere

If you were on Usenet, you must remember the public plonking. That always drove me nuts (yes short trip). If you are going to block somebody and ignore them, why do you need to announce it loudly. I did some plonking back in the day, but I'd not tell the plonkie that I was the plonker.

You can. It’s called the ignore feature. There’s directions in the FAQ. I’d link you but am on Tapatalk at the moment.

One more here song for tonight and then over in Trump thread all by Zevon. Yea I was/am a super fan. World lost an amazing writer when he died. He was only in his 50s.  He could have had 20 or more years of songs in him if he had lived.

John Kelly was in the House When the House Burned Down.

Oh shit, I really do have lyric OCD or something.  How about David Byrne Burning Down the House?

General Kelly speaking of these Marines only days after his son died was killed. I respect General Kelly. That is all there is to say about it from me at this point. 6 seconds.jpg

What does the international, or the Italian, press have to say about that?

I don't particularly care. I care about what Kelly had to say about that. I don't need the media to tell me how to think.
