Counting On Season Two- Part 3

Yeah, what happened to the "WE NEVER SAID WE WERE PERFECT" song and dance from last summer? JB and Michelle were apparently just at a marriage retreat this weekend speaking on how to "affair-proof your marriage" smh. What kind of hubris...

Tip #1: Don't marry Joshley.

I know JD doesn't say much on camera that makes it to the show. However, I don't recall him spouting the words that are prevalent in the other's conversations e.g. "the Lord", "purpose to",  "encourage".  Please set me straight if I am wrong about this.

I have to admit that I really couldn't make it through the past 3 episodes. So painfully dull.

Omg throwback to Jessa/Bin courting like the clip where he's helping them clean the trees I guess I blocked the awkwardness. Also just a general question to you all that have in laws, do you guys call them mom/dad or their names? Just cause I realized I've gotten the vibe that Ben and Derrick call them mrs./mr. duggar.

I've been married a year and I'm still attempting to figure this out. :pb_lol:

My FIL was in a band as a young man and his nickname is the name of the band. I usually call him that. But I've recently started referring to him as Poppa - I'm pregnant and the past two Grandpas on his side of the family were called Poppa "Bob" and Poppa "Bill". He may eventually be called Poppa "Band Name" or Poppa "Real Name."

His mom I have more trouble with. I've always referred to her as Mrs. "Smith" because I was taught its respectful to refer to adults that way - she's fine with me using her first name, but it's a tough habit to break. To my husband I'll call her Momma L or something similar. I'll figure it out eventually.

Here here! I thought he was odd from the get go. Always slobbering over Meechelle. Always holding her arm. That strange leer he does instead of smiling. The leer doesn't reach his eyes. The non-jokes. The way he shoved his way in between  between Jill and Derick then put his arm on Jill's back.

He has no off button. I haven't seen the latest shows just clips. ( we always behind in the UK). When  JinJer were with their parents in the Mexican shop in Laredo he grabbed a small basket and shoved it on Jeremy's head. Why! Just why? Normal fathers just wouldn't do that to their soon-to-be son-in-laws.

His holy Boobiness really is an odd one.

I haven't watched the episodes, preferring to get the recaps here but putting a basket on Jeremy's head?!?   In what universe is that supposed to be funny and you bet that JB thought it was funny.

He seems to think that he's a legend in his own mind.    I guess years of being patriarch of a large family with kids that look up to him, an adoring wife that looks up to him, everything points to him being in charge and knowing it all because he's the husband / father, I suppose he's making up for whatever failures he may have experienced when younger but it's over the top.

Joseph - When I'm married and have to give away my daughters I have to know they're the right one and not just there for the prize.

I'm trying and trying to parse this one, and failing horribly....  Is the "prize" sex?  Surely the prize would be the heart and hand of the girl you love?  Is this some weird USA fundy thing, or just SOTDRT?

Here's what I don't understand about this being an ad for the mankids - how would it work?  The male kidult approaches the female kidult's father, to ask permission - often without the girl knowing, it seems - so a girl couldn't tell her father she is convicted god has laid it on her heart to be a helpmeet for JD etc.  While it totally feels like they're laying out  smörgåsbord of Duggar boys and hoping for responses, how could anyone respond to the adverts?

(It's especially weird in the context of Smuggar, and Josiah.  I really feel for Josiah, the only one to have "failed" so far, and having to do this, pretending it never happened.  I will always be happy for him that it did fail, and he's not 20 with a child and no hope of outside employment, but still, it must hurt him, and I hate that.)

@Buzzard Thank you so much for recapping for us, so we don't have to watch it!

I'm assuming that "the prize" is the sweet virtue of the maiden.  You can deflower her by holding her hand wrong, kissing her, or (heathen!) sex.

I thought the prize would be getting a Duggar daughter with the high visibility attached, Who knows.  Would have been good if the interviewer had followed up with that.

I thought the prize was getting to be on a boring reality show. Not a prize I would want.

Well to be fair Josh did sing a song at the wedding that said: I'll do my best, to be faithful and true!

So, guess that's why he chose that song. As for J&A's wedding I felt so bad for Anna from the dress that her bridesmaids were outdoing her in their handmade ones, to the crunchy ramen looking hair... poor thing deserves a do over. Seriously though, I don't like modesty necessarily but the dresses the Duggar girls wore were just lovely.

Well, maybe the porn and affairs were the best he could do....

It is kind of sad for Anna that the wedding took place before they had all the sponsors and money. I still think there's a potential for a renewal of vows wedding type thing.

Well, JB and M did the renewal thing complete with a new dress with puffy sleeves. Was she pregnant at the time? I can't remember. I just recall littles rolling around the floor annoying other customers.

So Anna could have the dress of her dreams, sans puffy sleeves, for her renewal vows. Oh wait. She'd have to promise to be true to Joshley again. Scratch that.

I definitely heard Bin refer to JB as Pops in one of the last few episodes and it made me laugh out loud. It just sounded so goofy coming from him. I know the girls call him that but I'd love to see JB's face sometime when goofy ass Bin calls him that.

When they were talking about Joe's preferences for a mate it seemed that all the siblings were in agreement that Joe would be attracted to a short brunette country girl who talked a lot and had a good sense of humor and style.  It's almost like they had someone specific in mind.  Carlin Bates perhaps?  Sorry, don't mean to start up that speculation again.

Haha I thought that exact same thing. The fact that they were asking questions as weirdly specific as hair color, and that they were given answers that weren't "uh, I dunno" made me think that there were a few of them who did have someone in mind.

I call mine by their first names. I've always been pretty possessive of my parents (typical only child), so the idea of calling someone else mom and dad is just odd to me. My MIL also retained her maiden name, and I've always had anxiety about accidentally calling her Mrs. Curator (she's very vocal about correcting that mistake), so that was out, too. It helps that she's got a pretty unique first name in which she takes a lot of pride. FIL is very laid back, and doesn't care about this kind of thing.

I haven't watched the episode, and probably won't. At the most maybe I'll attempt to watch the episode, but get distracted by something more useful (like cleaning or a sewing project) and eventually turn it off in favor of good music.

In any case- some thoughts on the recap:
"The Prize?" EWWWW! This line coming from Joseph really shows how much the boys have absorbed their sexist indoctrination. It also leads me to believe that they think the God Bobber's creepy possessiveness over his daughters is not only acceptable, but something they want to emulate. Ugh.

On Josiah: The fact that Marjorie wasn't mentioned is ridiculous. Then again, everything about this crazy family's life is edited for public consumption, why am I not surprised?

Even the flashbacks have flashbacks.

Can they give us the ugly realities about this family or just cancel the damn thing already? It's not real, nor is it educational or entertaining.

I still live in the same area I grew up in. If I run into my old classmates parents I always refer to them as Mr/Mrs. or in the case of one if my classemates his father is a doctor so I call him doctor lastname. I'm not married I'm not sure what I would can potininal in-law

Modesty is one thing, you can do it stylishly they do it more of a "LOOK AT ME I'm so modest" kind of way. You can do it with anyone realizing you are doing it, but I guess in Duggardum what is the point of doing something if people don't realize you are doing it.

well they can't show something that doesn't work because of the lord

and in  last week's episode Ben called JB and called him pops which was INSANE

no need to watch this episode at all - it was a flashback frenzy

the fifteen minutes re the airport was all it was about - meaning nothing

it was a joke and needs to be cancelled

Re: calling the inlaw parents by what name?

My mother and father are MY parents. Mr. Four called them Mr/Mrs Firstname, as I called his parents. His mother never felt or acted motherly toward me, and I never felt daughterly toward her, so Mrs. Firstname it was, to show respect.

Its occurred to me that they are having trouble getting the boys married off because of Smugger & Boob. What parent would want to throw their daughter into that cluster fuck of a family?  They married off 4 daughters in 2 1/2 years and not a single son despite 3 of them being marriageable. I think they are doing this to show that the boys are NOTHING like their eldest scumball of a brother.  But they will still have to deal with issue of King Boob.

I feel rude now. I've always called them by their first names. I would NEVER call them Mum/Dad, and they put the kibosh on Mr/Mrs very quickly.

I also called Mr Alba's grandfather "Grandpa" and call his grandmother "Granny"; I don't feel weird about this because I've always had more than one granny and my only grandfather was Papa, not Grandpa.

Slight correction -

Theyve married two daughters and almost have a third married. Unless I missed the memo and Amy is somehow secretly Boob and Michelle's kid. And if she is (which she's not) then I'd guess they don't acknowledge her because they didn't give her a J name. :pb_lol:

Don't feel rude! The only thing that matters is that you and your in-laws are fine with what you call them. Every family is different and different things work for everyone.

Yeah, my in-laws are very informal and, as we're so far from my parents, have really tried to make me feel like part of the family for things like Christmas. I just had no idea other people still called their in-laws by their titles [emoji14]

I couldn't get through the episode, I ended up erasing it from my DVR and then I deleted the show completely so it won't record future episodes.

Too dull and boring even for snark watching.
