Law and Order: Duggars

My mum grew up thinking her youngest aunt was the youngest of her grandparents large family.  Turns out she was the illegitimate child of one of the older daughters.  The identity of the mother was never confirmed, although everyone thinks they know which one it was.  It was a really sad story actually, and I suspect it happened a lot years ago - this was in the 1940s.  These days there's no major stigma on illegitimacy in normal society, but in a fundie family, I can see this still happening.

I think this sort of thing happened quite a bit during the "Baby Scoop" era, when it was a common practice for unmarried white women to be forced to give birth and then forced to give up their babies in closed adoptions. Having your mother or another older female relative adopt your baby was probably the only way to keep the child in the family without causing shame.

Topic? As disturbing as it is, I don't think the SVU story would work if a younger child was the victim. A Duggar-like family wouldn't report the abuse to the police, regardless of the age of the victim, and the child probably has no contact with a third party that would help them. Something that can't be hidden, like a baby, is the only way to get the plot rolling and SVU involved, so the victim has to be an older girl (this is not to say that it's any "better" if an older child is abused, and it could be that SVU finds that other girls in the not-Duggar family have been abused as well).

Is anyone else aware that former L&O producer Jason "Jace" Alexander was arrested this summer for child pornography? Just Google it and you will find lots of links.

I think they will use Olivia to be a victim's advocate for women in oppressive religious environments. I see her and a male detective (I heard Stabler is coming back but idk if that's true?) and fake JB in a room and JB is being smug AF and only talking to the male detective and Olivia getting in his face screaming about him treating women like trash.

Snipped

This baby was given to an orphanage, and the mother didn't tell her parents.  They found out somehow when the baby was more than a year old, went to the orphanage and retrieved the baby. I'm not sure of the official process that happened - it was never discussed.  When my great aunt came home from school (she would have been around 8), her parents told her that this was her baby sister and no questions were to be asked. My grandfather was about 20, living away from home, and probably didn't ask any questions either.  So much secrecy :(

When does this episode air? I'm in Denmark so I doubt we'll get it so quick, but I can look it up online.

I really hope the focus of the episode isn't just on this specific situation with the duggar thing as just a bit of ironic character/flavour, but rather on how this lifestyle sets women up to be victims.

Also how on earth would you pronounce "Tymber" is it like a tree falling?! I do like the reference to fundietastic kreative naming.

Yes, like timber.

I know a lady who named her kid Timber/Tymber (don't remember how she spelled it) and that kid is late teens or early 20s, can't remember. No idea how they came up with the name and they were/are "prosperity gospel" folks.

I also hope they focus on the harm of the culture.

I have shared more and more with my hubs about FJ. Last night I told him that tonight we (or I) am watching SVU and he said "oh is this the Duggar episode?" Love him!. So I continued and I had to tell him what Buzzard said about the award and let him know that I would be doing the live blog. I told him, I already knew I wouldn't be doing homework so I might as well be useful :) . I think he wants to see the show too.

Now you have made him all excited and distracting him from his homework :my_dodgy: Because of the time difference (europe) I can't live read the recap but tomorrow morning my breakfast will be eaten behind my computer to read up the recap

Anyone know when this episode will be shown on TV in the UK? Or how far behind the series is on channel 5? I don't think it is currently being shown right now.

oh crap! Well then, I need to rush right out of class and get home to do the recap! Good excuse to get out of class on time- my professor likes to run over in the class and barely give us a break- class is from 6-8:45 pm! I will leave on time, I might miss the opening scene- but I am thinking that is the preview I posted yesterday.

Too bad it's my homework. :(  I'm in grad school. However, he is a teacher so grading papers could be considered homework.

I could do a recap. I kind of will anyway because I'll be watching and snarling on here. But I can keep in mind to make it more detailed if people want.

Wish I could watch live but I'll have to wait until my toddler goes to bed. Realistically, it will probably be a few days before I get around to it. Shows are just piling up on our DVR these days.

I will start a detail one when I get home from class from where ever the episode is at (I should get home by 9:05). If you want to detail the opening scene, that would be great because I may miss that. Seriously, if more than one of us do it, people will get a good idea different points of view :)

I hadn't seen this preview yet....

http://www.inquisitr.com/2539478/duggar-inspired-law-order-svu-episode-preview-shows-daughter-doing-something-duggar-girls-arent-allowed-to-do-video/

I love the Jana character getting yelled at for not watching the toddler. And the Jim Bob guy is pretty creepy. The married couple kissing is a pretty good Anna/Josh (though in this case, the girl is the Duggar character.)

I still don't think they'll have the brother be the father. I think it's going to be the pastor. But maybe it's just because that actor was a 'bad guy' on another show I watched.

Great find!

Difference # 1 - NotMichelle rushes to her daughter's side and is concerned.  She really should have pulled out her phone and started filming.

I'm sorry, this is just WRONG! And I hope the Duggars sue the pants off LAW & ORDER.

This is exploitation of the worst kind. This show did this about a murder in NY, too. It was still very fresh on all our minds, the gruesomeness, the grief, we lived it every day. And L&O dragged it all up again before the girl was cold in her grave. Plus, they screw  w/details & ppl watching will take it as fact. It's just wrong.
