"How to Win the Heart of a Rebel"

So I was just listening to an interview Mullet did a few years ago, and someone asked her what she would do if any of her children rebelled. She said that they had a radio program about this that they played frequently "as a preventative measure" and that they thought it was the best advice.

So I found a transcript of this radio program.

God help any rebelling Duggar. It's going to be rough.

Wow.

also great preventive maintenance for younger families. Why become entrapped in the world's idea of childhood?

um okay...

My observation is this: Children are better socialized in the family setting of a home school environment because they learn to relate to both adults AND other youth.

I've seen a shy, withdrawn 7 year old girl pull out of her shell and start walking up to adults and talking to them at Church after three months of Home School.

I saw my two oldest daughters choose older, Godly ladies in their 50's and 60's to be bridesmaids in their weddings along with girls their own age.

Think for a moment. We talk about the benefits of socialization. And I'm not totally against a child being with those his own age. But what good thing does a 10 year old learn from another 10 year old?!

um.... how to socialise with people their own age.... how to be an equal... how to share... ugh

the punishment was worse than I expected! i'm actually really angry reading this.

Sometimes parents listen to this message and ask: "But what about the Parable of the Prodigal Son? Didn't the father just let him go?" My answer to that is this: If you want to follow the principles of Luke 15 as soon as you have a problem, then you may certainly do so. But don't be surprised when your child winds up in the hog pen. Ecclesiastes 10:10 is clear in teaching that there are different principles that may be used with different problems. But wisdom seeks to use the sharpest axe possible to deal with any particular problem of life.

ugh fundies taking old testament as gospel and ignoring the gospel. I grew up with Luke 15... the amount of times we had to act it out at school or that it was used in liturgies or even at home. It's one of the Bible stories that sticks out most in my mind.

The thing that makes me really angry is that they especially recommend this method for special needs children from early childhood. i think of my brother and he acts out when he's frustrated because his brain isn't working the same way as someone else's, he can't understand something or can't do something. It's literally something he can't control, and using this "disciplining" is the sort of thing that would make him more frustrated and it's just a cruel punishment for any kid, but especially those with special needs.

ugh. i really hope that none of the kids are ever subjected to any of this.

Let me describe to you what is happening in our day. Johnny likes Susie. But then they break up. Then he likes Christina. But they break up. Then he likes Kate. But they break up. Then he likes Anna. But they break up. Then he likes Kelly. And he marries Kelly! Then they break up.

She clearly listens to this guy. This is almost the exact example shes given for why "dating" is bad but "courting" is good.

This "cat business" is tough on me. We now have a yard full of immoral, prolific cats. We have one mother cat who has given birth to 54 kittens. You should see her strutting around on Mother’s Day! She thinks God’s command to "be fruitful and multiply" was given just to her!

Only an educated fool believes man came from monkeys :wtf:

I think it was in The Happiest Baby on the Block, where the author Harvey Karp describes babies acting out as a way that they're talking to themselves about the problem. Like a crying baby is saying, "i'm hungry" or "I've got a wet diaper" over and over to themselves. It's not an rebellion thing, or a revenge thing to the parents. It would be like adults thinking, time to make a snack or something, except that babies cry. The same thing can be said about special needs kids. They just don't understand how to deal with what's going on. You're so right, disciplining them would be cruel punishment, just like spanking a baby is cruel.

Just changing my way thinking about crying to it being a kid announcement helped me parent better. In my family, angry crying was seen as rebellion and brought punishment. (Spankings started sometimes before 1 month)

Life is so much happier now that i don't have to look at kid-anger or frustration as a personal attack on me. My mom had a lot of unnecessary stress because she took that approach. (and yes my parents used S.M. Davis's ideas, it brought back a lot of memories when i saw the title to this thread)

I have read about S.M. Davis. Most of his stuff is along the lines of the Pearls and Tripps. No blame is ever laid on the parent. Davis takes the story of Tamar way out of context. . Didn't he advise to not soothe a crying baby or they will rule the house? I feel for any kids raised this way.

of course they tend to leave out man is really made from a handful of dirt. that really makes sense when you know what is in dirt it's full of bugs and shit and humans are full of both.

They always use the "atheists believe something came from nothing" line. There are so many things wrong with that statement.

1: Atheist =/= Evolutionist. Just because someone believes in Evolution, at least to an extent, does not make them an atheist. These two terms are not synonymous and it really irks me that both crazy christians AND atheists play into this bullshit. (Richard Dawkins, the infamous crocaduck debate between Kirk Cameron/Banana man and a few atheists.)

2: The big bang theory (which is what they usually use this argument for) was "created" by a monseigneur. Ya know, a CATHOLIC man of god.

3: Evolutionists do not believe humans came from nothing. That would be the christian creationists' theory. Evolution took time - a lot of fucking time - and it doesn't involved someone just popping into existence (god) and randomly creating humans.

4: As usual, they conveniently forget that there are a myriad of creation stories that are not christian. All the natives in the US have their stories. The egyptians have their stories. I'm sure the many African tribes have stories. Every civilization has a creation story. But NO! Only christians matter.

5: This is getting off topic, but they don't understand that science and the bible are not the same thing. I have no problem with creationism being taught in public schools. In fact I would encourage it. An entire class learning about all the different creation theories would be absolutely amazing. I certainly would have loved it in high school. (I took comparative religion classes in college and still reference the books from that class that are in my living room book case) But they don't want that. They want THEIR specific brand of creationism taught INSTEAD of a scientific theory. That's like teaching genesis in History class as fact. Oh wait - they already do that in their not real homeschool curriculums.

6: Evolution does NOT say that humans came from monkeys. It says we have common ancestors. You would think the trip to Nepal would have opened some eyes to the possibility of that being the case.

7: Finally - and this is my favorite - the idea that the earth revolves around the sun is just a theory, too. They have no idea what the word "theory" means in the scientific community.

As one of the Duggar boys said once "I love when my mom teaches us science. She's really good at it. She always starts with the point of view from the Bible....."

They clearly don't learn much of any biology, and I'm pretty certain the bible says absolutely nothing about electricity or chemistry or botany or a myriad of other science subcategories. So how does the bible have a point of view on any of that? Or is it something like "God inspired Marie Curie to discover the x-rays he put in the world" bc that's pretty shitty. Especially considering it killed her.

They were planting things in the greenhouse so Michelle read from the Bible and I wasn't listening because 19KaC is usually background noise for me so I'm not sure what passage it was, but I did hear "and he planted the seed"

It was in 'Pushups and planting'
