Arndts' favorite films

It's funny. I don't seem to be seeing Blue is the Warmest Color on the list. Now I know they're not overly into modern films, but that one is a clear shoe-in.

And Legally Blonde... Which I'm watching right now.

I have no clue what the Arndts' criteria for a good movie is but I can't believe these films aren't on their list:

Ben-Hur (1959)

Spartacus (1960)

The Apartment (1960)

The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

North By Northwest (1959)

The Philadelphia Story (1940)

The Maltese Falcon (1940)

To Kill A Mockingbird (1962)

E.T. The Extraterrestrial (1982)

The Grapes of Wrath (1940)

It's A Wonderful Life (1946)

Sunset Blvd. (1950)

Singin' in the Rain (1952)

I won't comment on all these films because I don't know what they'd find objectionable, but

Ben-Hur -scenes with Lawrence Olivier and Tony Curtis as Larry's "body servant"

Spartacus -somebody besides Jesus is crucified

The Apartment -Shirley McLaine is a "slut" and CC Baxter's apartment is borrowed for co-workers' assignations

The Shawshank Redemption -suicide, Rita Hayworth picture and exposure of prison brutality

North by Northwest -Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint and a train -need I say more?

The Philadephia Story -divorced heroine

The Maltese Falcon -subtext about Sidney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre

To Kill a Mockingbiird -too progressive

ET - I know I've heard some conservative objections to this, but it's been a long time

The Grapes of Wrath -practically Socialist

It's A Wonderful Life - suicide attempt and makes a capitalist look bad

I'd have to think of an objection to Sunset Boulevard and Singin' in the Rain.

It's a Wonderful Life was on their list under black & white movies.

The scenes with Olivier and Tony Curtis you refer to are not in Ben Hur.

Thanks for the correction, lizziesmom! I got Spartacus and Ben-Hur a bit (a lot!) mixed up. The scene IS in Spartacus, but there is a gay subtext to the character of Messala's relationship with Ben-Hur. Gore Vidal wrote it that way. Charlton Heston always denied that it was in there, though. Dalton Trumbo wrote Spartacus, btw and Kirk Douglas insisted that Trumbo, one of the blacklisted Hollywood 10, receive screen credit for his work. President Kennedy crossing picket lines to see the film helped end the blacklist. I'll watch Spartacus, but I won't waste my time with Ben-Hur. The chariot race is better in the silent version anyway. It starred Ramon Navarro, who happened to be gay.

What about baseball movies? Field of dreams? I have seen it In forever... And ya Sandlot, rookie of the year, little big league... Ooooohhhh Angels in the outfield!

I don't think those are horrible or anything. Nothing a 30+ guy couldn't handle.

Except maybe Wendy Prefercorn from the sandlot! lol!

Field of Dreams is way too metaphysical and the parents are old hippies, to boot.

ETA: James Earl Jones is in both The Sandlot and Field of Dreams. Has he been in any other baseball films? I know that Kevin Costner has been in five movies about baseball or a ball player, but there's no way that the Arndt's would find Bull Durham acceptable.

Yes, and the oldest ones went to Catholic schools for a year or two during middle/high school.

It's definitely the trampy 16 going on 17 year old girl who wants to taste her first champagne.
