There seems to be an inexorable law of fashion under modern socialism: Power women dress with heightened exuberance, glorying in their vitality, while dress standards overall deteriorate. Children look much worse, as if they rolled out of bed in their pajamas, and most women and men do too. This is an age of the horribly dressed. But elite women are triumphantly feminine and wear some genuinely fantastic threads.

This is nothing to do with socialism (in what way, shape or form is the US existing under "modern socialism"?) and everything to do with Rich Women Wearing Nice Dresses. The Lousewife may be intrigued to know that women who are well-off and are the partners of powerful men, or are powerful themselves, have always dressed well. Michelle Obama didn't invent the trend.

There are a few factors which contribute to the public’s perception of her fashion sense. Firstly, what people see in her sense of style is really what most “career†women are wearing these days.

Errr, no. I work with a lot of women who are career women. None of them dress remotely like Michelle Obama.

Despite all of this, she makes atrocious mistakes, which I think shows her lack of understanding of clothes, her lack of style, and her lack of an eye for beautiful things.

Some examples are: her terrible shrunken sweaters which she clinches with wide, ungainly belts; the short shorts she wore on the public family holiday this summer to the confusion of every fashion and pop culture commentator; her dress for the “Christmas at the White House†interview which was too short, showing her unattractive calves (here I think she was “upgrading†the clearly fifties dress she was wearing to appear more modern and hip.)

But, there is a final and more subtle reason, I think, for her choices. I’ve noticed this with black celebrities. They seem to want to form their own style, different from the white world around them. Perhaps Michelle refuses to follow the precedent of listening to experienced stylists and designers, who themselves are formed by the white world, and thus will make her dress “white.â€

I also love the idea that white people all have one style. Srsly. I passed one of my bosses in the street the other day and she was wearing a bright red coat. I was wearing a military-style coat. She had her hair flowing and I have my head shaven. But we were both white so our style must be the same, amirite?

To me, Mrs. Obama appears at times to be wearing a costume. I can’t quite explain why she looked silly in her designer veil and black attire at the Vatican, but she did.

Michelle Obama can't cure that and she can't ever dress to please you because you're a racist who doesn't respect her. She can dress traditionally and she's wearing fancy dress. She can dress in things she likes and she's deliberately flaunting her blackness and disrespecting us whites.

I had no memory of the horrible fashion faux pas in bold so I hit up my friend, Mr. Google, to see what I had missed. As it turns out, I'd missed nothing. I looked through 5 pages of searches and the only thing I could find was links mainly to this article: http://www.examiner.com/article/michell ... ama-photos or at the very least, this incident.

I ASSumed this was the incident that was being spoken of (I'm not quite awake yet), so I started reading the comments on that article and after I was part way through them (most of them saying people need to get a life because what the first family wears on vacation is not news) I noticed that beside one of the comments it said 4 years ago. I went to the next one and then that registered. Wait a minute...4 years ago? Maybe that is when the commenter registered on the site? Scrolling back through, nope all of them say 4 years ago. So scrolling back to the top of the article I see, sure enough this incident happened in 2009.

I thought ok that's weird, I just got the wrong incident, you'd think the more recent one from 2013 would be first in google, but I'm not awake yet, clearly my mistake. So back to google. Uh nope. There was ONE article on page 3 or so that was dated 2013, but when I clicked on it, it was actually from 2009 and had just been updated in 2013.

I did find one other article where she had the audacity to walk Bo on the White House lawn in shorts that were probably longer than the ones she is wearing in the vacation photo. Comments on that photo were equally scathing regarding why this was even news.

This was taken when they were visiting the Grand Canyon. I have never been to the Grand Canyon, but I went to New Mexico and Arizona once and it was approximately the temperature of the surface of the sun ;) The soles of my shoes melted on a 2 block walk from the hotel to a convenience store. So I kinda don't blame people for wearing shorts on their VACATION. It's not like she was meeting the head of another country or something. This was their "private" time (despite the claim they were on a public vacation..wtf does that even mean? Do we all get to join them?), such as they get. Good for them for being like regular people, I say.
