Lori Alexander: Free Health Care = Hitler

Recommended Posts

Lori invokes Godwin's law like it's going out of style.

Many in our country now believe if we can get everything for free from the government, life will be good. Not so! This happened in Austria under Hitler and turned into a very bad, evil thing.

Was that the worst possible thing Hitler did, Lori?

On the ask a libertarian thread someone said they believed the Holocaust happened because of socialism. This guy should have a long talk with Lori.

Whaaat? That's so wrong and ill-informed I can't even... understand how someone came to that conclusion.

Yeah, I was kind of lost for words. The argument was that prior to Hitler's rise to power Jewish people were safe because they traded with Gentiles, but socialism changed that so they couldn't, or something. There you go folks. You can blame anti-antisemitism on the fall of the free market. I weep for humanity. The thread is still there if you're feeling masochistic.

What is it with fundies and Hitler? :? Hitler is not synonymous for everything-I-believe-is-evil.

Well, Nazi is short for National Socialism, and since we all know that genocidal politicians never lie, Nazis were socialists. Duh.

In Austria?!

And, yeah. I don't even know what to say to that. These people do actually think they're smart, right?

Exactly. I won't deny that Hitler was evil, and the holocaust was horrible, but not everything Hitler did for Germany was bad. In fact, I believe he was responsible for a lot of road reconstruction (the Autobahn?) and pulling Germany out of a depression.

Admitting that not everything he did was bad does not negate the fact that he did horrible things.

At first I thought the 'Austria' thing was just Lori over-correcting because Hitler was from Austria. Actually, this story is based on the recollections of an Austrian woman who was a child in the 1930s-40s. It seems to be in the model of: Absolutely nobody could have realized that the Nazis were anything bad, everyone was greedily grabbing up free stuff, then (then is 1943) it was too late!

That's kind of true for fundies as well. And people in general.

I do think her post was one of the most laughable she has done. The hospitals were full of people getting medical care? Why is that a bad thing?

I don't think Jesus would worry as much as she does about who pays for the poor's medical care and food.

The fuck with these people??

Didn't Jesus command that they take care of the sick, poor, widows. anybody in need? Don't your "precious" tax dollars paying for healthcare fall under that category? Oh and DOT, police force, fire department...etc. Is that all evil too?

I'm kind of allergic to the, "But he built the Autobahn!" argument. Yes, he created jobs, yes, he did really get a move on with the road construction. He didn't do any of that because he wanted to help the unemployed or the poor or even the country, he did all that in preparation for the war. War was the goal from the beginning. Many of the jobs that were created were in the war industry.

The building of the Autobahn was started before Hitler came to power, he just built it faster than would've been the case otherwise. The depression would've ended without him, too. The only good thing that man ever did for my country was killing himself and showing what a coward he really was.

sogba, thank you for clearing the Austria thing up for me. I love when people say they couldn't have known. Yeah, maybe if you lived on a farm in the middle of nowhere, but people in the cities had no excuse. People lived just across the street from concentration camps. They saw their neighbors getting deported. Most people simply didn't care as long as it wasn't them.

So... They have to go back nearly 100 years to support their arguments when Democratic Socialism is alive and well in many countries. Of course!! It is only logical!!

Some liberatarians seriously argue that if you can't afford to pay your fire protection fee, you should have to watch your house burn down and have nobody with protective gear on hand to rescue anybody who may be trapped in that burning house.

Apparently money really does grow on trees and the only way not to have enough money for all of your needs is to be too lazy to go pick money off of your money tree.

While I paid my fire protection fee that the state introduced, I'm kind of annoyed- I live in a rural neighborhood that has one acre lots, fire hydrants/hoses that we maintain and are expected to step in if we need to save a neighbor's house, and we already pay a county fee for the volunteer fire department. Why do I need to pay twice?

There's a fee above and beyond taxes? I've lived in an area with volunteer fire/rescue services. We did not have to pay an additional fee. Then again we never had to use those services, so I don't know if maybe a fee was billed after the fact. I always assumed these things were supported with tax dollars and never looked into it.

Ah, this one annoys me. The difference between a National Socialist and an international socialist is vast.

One might as well say a cat and a catalogue are the same thing because they both have the word "cat" in them.

EXACTLY! People are so ignorant, they have NO idea what they are saying.

My "favorite" is 'Obama is a Nazi, a Socialist, and a Marxist!'

Dammit! What is it with Christian fundies and Godwin's law?

They're so damn ignorant of history Hitler's the only historical character they can reliably name?

That would explain why he gets used in every comparison they make.

QFT. Also, it's my understanding that universal health care in Germany began back in the 1880's with Otto von Bismarck, not with Hitler. But then, why should facts matter when you can just use Nazis to get everyone emotionally worked up instead?
