What does Obamacare have to do with the Bible and Christianity? Aren't you all the ones who are always crying about separation of church and state?

Obamacare has to do with providing healthcare to the poorest and most at risk among us. Right now, the most efficient way to do that is through the state rather than privatized healthcare/insurance companies. Most of us compassionate Christians support Obamacare because, well, we're supposed to take care of the "least of these brothers and sisters," and the government is the most efficient and easiest way to do that.

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

As a Canadian, I find the US for-profit health care system unfathomable and confusing. I certainly don’t pretend that our evil, socialist system is without flaws – there absolutely is waste and inefficiency - but to even have a discussion regarding whether or not a person is WORTHY of basic healthcare is beyond absurd.

Same here, as a Briton. If I was religious, I would thank God for the NHS every time I read a thread such as this.

I don't oppose healthcare reform. I just don't think Obamacare is going to fix everything and in fact, I think it will ultimately make things worse. I just think it's funny how everyone is drooling over how great and awesome Obamacare is but I think there are a lot of terrible things coming after it is fully implemented. Of course, once that happens, I am sure everyone will somehow find a way to blame Republicans even though they had nothing to do with it.

From what I've read, I think some of the problems we're seeing now will be addressed when it's fully implemented, so I think there will be less problems. I don't believe there will be "death panels" or a decrease in care or some of these things people have predicted, because they haven't happened in other places with actual socialized healthcare. TBH, a single-payer system would be much better, but that would have met with even more opposition.

I doubt "everyone" will blame the Republicans. If Republicans in your area are some type of persecuted minority that gets blamed for everything, then you are living in a very different place than me. Around here, people are blaming Obama for stuff that happened before he ever got elected and for things that the government isn't even connected to.

And if Obamacare is so great, then you really have nothing to complain about do you? Isn't the great savior of America going to make everything all wonderful for you with his healthcare plan?

I'm complaining about how screwed up it was before Obamacare. I don't know if it's not going to make things any better for me personally or not - it's been an improvement because I can now get insurance as long as we can afford it, but I'll admit cheaper insurance or Medicaid would help a lot, at least until we pay off the bankruptcy or I get a decent job.

Even if it doesn't though, i's not all about me. I have friends who are benefiting from it because they are in worse shape than me, including many who voted for Romney and are opposed to most social welfare programs in theory (but still willing to use and benefit from them).

I didn't see Obama as some great savior for America. I didn't even vote for him the first time and do still not agree with everything he or the Democratic Party supports (maybe why I'm still a registered Republican, for now), but he's done a better job than I anticipated and I do believe he's a much better president than Romney would have been. I was a Romney supporter at one time, because I ignored his record and went on the current hype, but there was no way I would have gotten on board with Ryan as well.

But I thought people like you were opposed to Obamacare.

So, basically, I should just fuck off and die?

Gonna print that in your newsletter?

And, no, that still puts us just above the income limit. I think it might be different if we were renting, but owning a home seems to work against you the way these things are calculated (and that won't change because then neo-Cons would be bitching about people in welfare living in these huge mansions while all they have is a singlewide or some shit). I really doubt NC will expand Medicaid considering the results of the last election pushed things even more Conservative and the state's had budget issues for years.

I'm in NC too, and my health policy professor is optimistic that the state will expand Medicaid. The insurance and medical lobbies are very strongly in support of it, and they are pretty powerful. Hospitals in particular will be screwed without the expansion because they will still have to provide emergency care, but their federal subsidies are going to be cut because based on the assumption that Medicaid payments will make up the difference. The cut is going to happen regardless of the expansion.

SWL is like that person in the joke where the Lord comes and tells a person he will give them a gift, but in the interest of full disclosure will give 2x as much to his neighbor. When asked what they wanted, the person says "Lord, poke my one eye out!"

SWL is perfectly happy to have her eye poked out rather than get something that will benefit her, as long as the rest of us are struck blind. Because under no circumstances should people she considers undeserving get ANYTHING.

I know SWL says we only call her a troll because she dares to disagree with the hive, but people disagree here all the time without being called that. Look at Lucky in the Christmas gift thread, nobody is calling her a troll. People are disagreeing all over the place in the barber shop thread. SWL, cannot use any sort of logic, reason, or even her own Bible to back up her beliefs/actions. She just spouts stuff and then gets mad when people expect her to at the very, very least apply basic biblical principles to her behavior. She is also not interested in becoming a real member here she just wants to stir up drama, so, SWL, that is why people call you a troll.

Clearly. Her husband works at Wal-Mart and she's a Romney supporter or Tea Party supporter or whatever. Hard to be more against your own best interests than that.

If she's to be believed, that is. She is just as likely a lying troll that lies.

^She already knows that, she just accuses us of calling her a troll for disagreeing because it's inflammatory, and that's what trolls do.

You think being denied insurance because of asthma is bad, one if my moms old insurers once tried to deny me coverage because I had bad acne. Yes, bad acne. Guess how old I was. Go on. Guess. Hint: not even in high school.

I am going to say you were a preteen or baby. Both are prone to acne. Insurance companies use to use any excuse they could come up with to not cover someone.

Looks like the US Federal Appeals court upheld the decision of the lower court. Good news!

It will be about three seconds until the Greens start screaming that they're religious martyrs again.

Woohoo! When you said Greens, at first I thought you meant the party, and I was a bit confused.
