Russia has a history of silencing dissendants but now the state is applying religiosity to cases. I have to believe that the Fundi's would love it if something like this could happen in America.

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alekhina, and Yekaterina Samutsevich stood in handcuffs in a glass cage in the courtroom for three hours as the judge read the verdict. They smiled sadly at the testimony of prosecution witnesses accusing them of sacrilege and "devilish dances" in church.

Judge Marina Syrova said in her verdict that the three band members "committed hooliganism driven by religious hatred" and offended religious believers. She rejected the women's arguments that they were protesting the Orthodox Church's support for Putin and didn't want to hurt the feelings of believers.

Our fundies would love it if they could get people for disrepecting religion.

The women of Pussy Riot should have been convicted of simple trespass and that's it. Adding some sort of religious offense to ramp up the charges just shows us what will happen if our fundies get their hands on real power. Ironically, I think what offended Patriarch Kirill and the rest of the religious types was that Pussy Riot called on the Virgin to "chase Putin out!" Since he's quite cozy with Putin, that of course was offensive.

Interesting new information on Pussy Riot. I had already suspected that they were acting out at the behest of some dude(s), but I had no idea it was this bad. When will women learn that debasing themselves in pornulated ways to achieve male approval is NOT empowerment? :cry:
