Fundie Family on House Hunters International

Walking Cat Bed

Recommended Posts

The currently-available "collection" of House Hunters International on netflix includes a fundie family.

Josh and Sarah Brown and their nine kids move to Veneto, Italy.

I noticed the size of the family first, then Sarah's Michelle-Duggar-Voice. And then the Adoring Gaze whenever Josh had anything to say. Then google. And, yep -- she's written for Old Schoolhouse and Above Rubies. Cites Nancy Campbell on the blog.

There's a little slapfighting in the comments section about whether Home Hunters was trying to hide that they were a missionary family. (Proselytizing to the godless Italians!)

I feel a calling to go to Italy to drink wine look at art attend theater and music eat delicious food be a missionary too. It will be a tough job, but someone has to do it!

I will of course be graciously accepting donations for my trip. All that pasta and vino isn't going to pay for itself, you know!

When they talk about their reasons of moving to Italy Sarah writes

Quote

We love our freedom and our country. We don't like the fast pace, the rat race, and the materialism that surrounds us here. We love exploring the hills, vineyards, mountains, ancient villages, gardens, and crumbling castles - we wanted our kids to grow up exploring these amazing places too.

And then they left Italy after one year. Enough of exploring the vineyards already? Enough exploring done by the kids, so let's move on?

I wonder if there was some kind of trouble with their visa or if they had originally only planned to stay for a year.
Has anybody read more of the blog and can say something about this?

The kids loved learning how reality shows are created.  Since we homeschool this was a great chance for the kids to get some hands on experience in film making.
Isaac, age 14,  hung out with the film and sound crew and asked the guys at least a hundred questions about creating documentaries.

Does she somehow think that a teenager who isn't homeschooled wouldn't have been able to ask questions? Before they have a house and know which school district they belong to not-homeschooled children would have been along for filming during these first few days in Italy anyway. But maybe she imagined them drudging along silently and hollow eyed due to not being happy homeschool children.

Many of the House Hunters shows are "fairy tales". Several years ago, we vacationed in Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora. A year or two ago, I received an email from a company who rents vacation homes in that area. They were most proud that several of their vacation rental homes were being featured on an episode of HH International and to make sure we tune in and watch. After watching the show, I searched the website for the rental homes. And, sure enough, all 3 homes were still on the rental list. The furniture was the same, even on the house that was purchased! (The family portrayed was "moving" full time to Moorea, so there is no reason they would be renting it out for vacationers.)

B/t/w, best vacation ever!!! Worth the llooonnggg flights. It's beauty blows Hawaii away! They people are so warm and friendly.

They wanted to escape from "the fast pace, the rat race, and the materialism" and they came to Veneto!

:pb_lol:  :laughing-rolling:

No wonder they lasted only a year and then relocated to Ukraine, where cost of life is much lower.

Seriously though the stereotypes about Italy are miles away from reality.

I saw that episode.......did they really relocate  to the Ukraine? Where did  you find that  information. They lived in a  small town in Indiana and I  couldn't quite see what  was so hectic  about that, truthfully. Did they really locate to the Ukraine?  That  is definitely 2manyKidzzz to haul from country to country IMO.

Yes, they did:

and last year returned again:

(note the misspelling of Ukraine)

No clue where they are now.

I was actually trying to quote Joyleaf and can't undo this.

So, thank you Joyleaf for the info. So, they now have 10 kids, and the last post either on the blog or on her facebook was made about a year ago. Strange that.

I should have known by the voice when I saw the episode that they were fundie. And her parents were said to be close to them in Ukraine also, which is where this might come from. Weird, to me anyway.

Why would they be interested in the vineyards?  I assume the parents don't drink, so for them, a vineyard would just be another farm.  Farms are everywhere.

Well, what kind of visa allows you to go to a country in the EU and just live there if you have not been previously hired by a company, which did not seem to be the case. A proselytizing visa? I am not at all familiar with this, but it seems very uncertain. I mean, to live there full time is different from buying a vacation property and only vacationing. I don't know at all.

She had another blog entry from October about home schooling.  She didn't say where they were but discussed he unschooling methods and materials she used. Then she had a post about how 10 pregnancies have preserved her body and kept her healthy like a 23 yr old despite being almost 40.  Right.

They had all kinds of trouble when the unrest happened in the Ukraine. I'll let you read the article in the link below.

They lived in Fortville, Indiana before they moved to Italy. Fortville isn't exactly New York City.  Hell, it's not even Indianapolis. It's a suburb and it's one of the more remote suburbs. It's not Carmel or Greenwood... The population is under 4,000. Your life is only as hectic as you want to make it... Hello Josh and Sarah your life was hectic because you have 12 kids. I highly doubt being the Vice President of the Fortville Town Council was that overwhelming. Seriously, this is Indiana. Nothing here is *that* hectic. Stop getting pregnant and concentrate on the children you already have instead of adding arrows to your quiver.

So that explains my not-so-fit, not-so-healthy, far from 23 year old body, then. I only had TWO pregnancies. :?

Right? I'm over here clutching the withered remains of my youth, weeping over the ashes of my aging 34-year-old flesh. If only I'd thought to have 10 children instead!

I watched an episode that featured a family moving to Zambia, which interested me because of Shrader, and it was very faked as well. The family already lived there (in the house that they "chose"), and were never intending to move permanently.

Their blog is kind of interesting, and also hasn't been much updated in a couple of years. I will say, they went to Zambia with what I think were basically decent goals. They only have a couple of kids, so it's not overwhelming, and wanted to teach actually useful things like language and farming techniques instead of just their interpretation of the bible.

Of course, they were intending to adopt a couple of Little Brown Orphans to complete their missionary bingo card, which always earns a side-eye from me. In the end they didn't go through with the adoption, which may have been truly best for the children, or may have been a bit whitewashed for the blog. Overall, they just seemed rather painfully naive about the whole experience.

I couldn't get far on her blog.  The switching between different fonts got to me.  And then there was a whole entry in comic sans italics....

Oh yeah, she has multiple entries in that weird font. It's super distracting.

The article refers to the wife as a 'special education specialist'.  Given how young she was when they married (and the neverending baby factory), I wonder whether she is one for realz, or is it a 'Jana is a concert pianist' situation.

"I was afraid," Sarah Brown said. "But my husband and I were hopeful. I’d seen the faces of orphans who needed us and a revolution in Ukraine was not going to stop us."

Sarah Brown says she and her husband have no regrets. She admires the simplicity, courage and passion of the Ukrainians.

"I’d love to get back there and help with rebuilding the nation," she says.

Yeah, I can't find any information on her educational background. So, I can't figure out if she's faux or if she has real credentials.

Well she did claim in one of her blog posts that at least one of her kids has Asperger's. IIRC, at least one other child had a learning disability of some kind. So I guess that makes her a "special education specialist" in her mind. Just like Jim Boob and Mullet probably assume dry humping on the mini golf course and kissing in front of their courting children makes them "Christian sex educators".

  • 4 weeks later...

In the all moved in tour of the house, Sarah claims that the baby sleeps in their room, yet the crib is in the older girls' room with the four bunks. Unless it's the truth, and they just cosleep, why lie? Oh, wait. Because fibbing for Jesus is totally fine.

Perhaps a teenager who went to a more traditional school would have the discipline to not be pestering the crew!

Kids can be curious without being annoying, but I just picture her beaming at her young genius while the crew tried to work.

I love baseball but I'm dreading the new season because the White Sox ownership is THE FUCKING WORST. I watched Dominican League Baseball (Lidom!) over the winter and fell in love with their joy, spirit, and exuberance. The broadcasts were in Spanish and my Spanish is pretty weak but I loved catching phrases and repeating them. Bombe! I'm sad about MLB and Commissioner Idiota's busywork rules. But I love baseball, always and forever.
I guess I don't have a point. Just bitching. Te amo mucho, Lidom!

Feeling ragey this morning. I have a doctor's appointment this afternoon in the hope of getting help for an ongoing injury. I went to a (different!!) doctor late last year who completely blew me off. He wouldn't do diagnostic testin, he refused to send me to a specialist, and he just told me to "take it easy" and "take ibuprofen." I'm hopeful for today's appointment but I'm also feeling a SEVERE amount of rage at that doctor from last year!

Well, the rash is back with a vengeance. It never completely cleared up. I saw the derm yesterday and they did another swab and yup, raging infection again, still? It is definitely strep skin infection. I am getting so damn tired and run down from this. Who the f would immagine being hospitalized freaking TWICE for a rash?

My niece is going to be a seat filler at this year's Academy Awards.  Seat fillers are asked to wear tuxedos regardless of sex/gender.  If you see a pretty young woman with very curly hair, it could be my niece.
