"Well Ain't That America"

When I grew up, Chevrolet had an advertisement that America was “baseball, hotdogs, apple pie, and Chevrolet.” It was catchy and it worked. America is all of those things and much more…like racism, oppression, inequality, an economic system of the haves and have-nots…and mass shootings.

The gun massacre at Highland Park yesterday during a Fourth of July parade seems kinda horribly appropriate. The nation isn’t really that shocked. It’s also not surprising that the shooter is probably a Trumper who’s been spotted attending at least one Trump rally dressed as Where’s Waldo (which I’ve actually put in cartoons in the past. I’m buying a lottery ticket later today).

Yesterday, the National Rifle Association tweeted, “The only reason you’re celebrating Independence Day is because citizens were armed.” A short time later, they tweeted the same point again, “We are a country because of brave souls with guns who valued and fought for liberty and freedom,” accompanied by a gif of a head-turning bald eagle. America, goddammit.

If you failed history then you probably believe the “only” reason you’re celebrating Independence Day is because a bunch of farmers has flintlock muskets, but in reality, our independence from Great Britain, at least for the white colonists, is based on a lot of complicated factors. Since the NRA wants to focus on guns, let’s start there. It’s estimaged that 90 percent of American troops carried guns supplied by France and were entirely dependent upon that nation for gunpowder. We did NOT win the Revolutionary War solely on private gun ownership.

When the Second Amendent was written, bullets weren’t even invented yet, and neither had Ak-47s and AR-15s.

Another fun inconvenient fact is that the new gun law bill President Biden signed into law last week wouldn’t have done a damn thing to even slow Highland Park shooter down from purchasing his assault rifle, which according to reports, he purchased legally.

Hell, Kyle Rittenhouse purchased his gun illegally yet there was no prosecution of that. This nation has accepted assault weapons to the point that nobody, including the cops, questioned a 17-year-old kid stomping around playing Rambo in the streets of downtown Kenosha with an AR-15 late at night. Even after Kyle shot three people, the cops waved him by.

When white supremacist Dylann Roof was arrested after murdering nine people with a gun in a church in Charleston, South Carolina, the cops took him alive and to Burger King.

Yesterdays shooter was also taken alive. Remember, unarmed Jayland Walker was killed by eight cops after they fired at least 60 bullets into his body. Jayland was black. Ain’t that America?

Mass shootings in churches, public schools, movie theaters, concerts, and parades will keep being a part of America as long as Republicans and the NRA keep assault rifles available to the public.

America is under assault and we prioritized assault weapons over lives, including those of children, a long time ago. Pro-life my ass.

You can’t compare our gun culture to any other nation. Republicans and other assorted gun fetishists try, but they always leave out a crucial detail. Nobody has a gun culture like we do. Nobody worships death machines the way we do.

And ain’t that America? All the pink houses are bullet-ridden.

"Thems The Breaks"

In a column in today’s Guardian, Gaby Hinsleff writes that England’s Conservative Party “owes this country a groveling apology.”

She writes “It should hang its head in shame for foisting on us a man so wholly unfit for office that he had to be dragged from it kicking and screaming and threatening to burn everything to the ground. It should apologize for choosing a leader it knew to be a lightweight and a liar, and propping him up for three years at our expense long after its worst fears had been realized. But most of all, it should apologize for repeatedly underestimating what he was capable of when cornered, and how hard he would be to remove. Nor should it expect, having apologized, to be forgiven.”

Boris Johnson submitted his resignation this morning in a speech in front of 10 Downing Street, and Gaby wrote, “you could almost hear the country sigh with relief. It’s goodbye to the worst prime minister any of us has ever known, and frankly, good riddance. He has brought this country to its knees, and his only legacy will be the long painful years of clearing up the damage.”

When Johnson resigned this morning, he said “thems the breaks,” as if it’s just bad luck he has to resign, as though he’s a victim of circumstance. Boris Johnson refused to accept any blame. Out of the 55 Prime Ministers the UK has had, Boris Johnson is the worst.

55 of Johnson’s ministers resigned, forcing him out of office. The plan is for him to stay on until around September after the Tories find a replacement, but it’s questionable how he’s going to lead when nobody wants to be in his cabinet.

Voters in the UK don’t directly elect their Prime Minister. He’s chosen by the party in power. It would be as if the House majority here chose the president, so if we had the same system, the GOP could put Donald Trump back in the White House if they retake Congress this November.

And, that’s exactly what they would do because unlike the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom, which finally gave up on a failed horrible leader, our conservative party still consists of boot-licking, toadying sycophantic troglodytes who have turned the party of Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Eisenhower, and Reagan into a cult worshiping an orange clown.

When Donald Trump was impeached…the second time, only ten Republicans voted in favor. Only three in the Senate voted to convict. This was after he tried to overturn an election he lost by sending an angry mob of rabid white nationalist terrorists to attack Congress while it was certifying the 2020 election.

Today, he is still the party’s leader and presently the favorite to win its nomination in 2024. In fact, there’s speculation he’ll announce his presidential candidacy this month in order to distract, and maybe to stall, a prosecution.

Boris Johnson and Donald Trump have several things in common. Neither were qualified for their jobs. They’re both racists and pathological liars, neither can accept blame or fault, and they both have ridiculous hair. The two things they don’t have in common is that Boris has some sense and his party isn’t as cultish.

Another thing both “leaders” have in common is that they’re both the worst. Johnson is the worst PM in UK history and Donald Trump is the worst president (sic) in U.S. history. Some historians say he’s only the third worst, but I disagree.

The Tories actually put their nation before one person today. Even after trying to steal an election and implant himself as a fascist mango Mussolini, the GOP still worships at the altar of Trump. They’re still pushing his election lie.

Donald Trump spent his entire time in office grifting the nation and lying. He engaged in petty feuds and endorsed racists and pedophiles. He downplayed a pandemic and touted Clorox enemas as a solution. He groveled at the foot of fascist dictators while attacking our democratic allies. He had a net loss of jobs when he left office. Trump’s approval never rose above 50 percent during all four years of our national orange nightmare. We are still cleaning up after the Trump disaster and the GOP wants to hit us with it again before we’re finished.

I don’t know if the Conservative Party has any shame, but I know the GOP doesn’t. They owe this nation an apology, and they should not be forgiven.

The UK gets to say good riddance to Boris…in three months or so. In November, we should say “good riddance” to the entire Republican Party for putting a lying racist orange shitweasel before the nation.

And if voters do that, well then, thems the breaks.

"Black And White Justice"

The white Highland Park shooter killed seven people and injured 46 (at this time). The police took him alive.

On May 14 of this year, a white gunman murdered ten black people at Tops supermarket in Buffalo. The police took him alive.

In 2015, white Dylann Roof shot and killed nine black parishioners inside a church in Charleston, South Carolina. The police took him alive and treated him to lunch at Burger King.

In March of last year, a white gunman murdered six Asian women at spas in the Atlanta area. Police took him alive.

In 2015, inspired by phony videos produced by a right-wing outlet claiming Planned Parenthood clinics were selling baby body parts, a white shooter attacked an abortion clinic in Colorado Springs and murdered three people. Police took him alive.

A white gunman murdered 12 at a theater in Aurora, Colorado in 2012, killing 12. He was taken alive.

In 2011, a white shooter killed six in Tucson, Arizona, and injured Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and several others. Police took him alive.

Racist right-wing whacko rancher Cliven Bundy and his heavily-armed white militia had a standoff with police in 2014 over some stupid right-wing bullshit. Guess what. They were all taken alive.

Kyle Rittenhouse, a 17-year-old white punk-ass beyotch, killed three at a Black Lives Matter protest and the cops initially drove right past him.

George Floyd, an unarmed black man, was killed by police after trying to spend a $20 counterfeit bill.

Breonna Taylor, an unarmed black woman, was shot eight times and murdered by police while she was sleeping after they broke into her home at the wrong address, looking for a person they already had in custody.

Rayshard Brooks, an unarmed black male, was shot in the back by police after they found him sleeping in his car.

In 2014, Cleveland Police murdered Tamir Rice, an unarmed black 12-year-old boy, for playing with a toy gun.

Philando Castile, an unarmed black man, was shot and killed by police during a traffic stop while reaching into the glove compartment to comply with the cops’ request for his vehicle registration.

Botham Jean, an unarmed black man, was shot and killed by a cop in his own apartment after the cop walked in thinking she was in her apartment and he was a burglar.

And last week, Jayland Walker was shot 60 times and killed by police in Akron, Ohio. Guess what. He was an unarmed black man.

It’s believed the Akron police shot at Walker around 90 times which is more shots than the Highland Park murderer got off (75). The Akron Police tried to put more bullets into one black man than the Highland Park mass shooter tried to put into a crowd.

Cops don’t seem to believe black lives matter, but white murderers’ lives do.
