Government Response to Coronavirus 2: It's Not A Hoax

Twitler sent a care package to his lapdog, Lindsey, to enjoy during his self-quarantine.

Too bad he wouldn't send care packages to people who actually need it.

I saw Pritzler in Illinois just ordered all bars and restaurants to shut down for the rest of the month after tomorrow.  I hope he's planning to help all the people who will be affected by this but with his background I kind of doubt it.  He might have a D behind his name but I just don't have a good impression of him.

Massachusetts just did the same thing. I'm pretty sure it is going to happen everywhere.

Just stopped at Starbucks for my dinner break.

The barista  said there’s a  big meeting tomorrow and they might be shutting down all Starbucks.

NOOOOO!

Articles today said they’re going to a ‘to go’ model and possibly shutting locations in high traffic areas like college campuses.

Yes, the one I stopped at was grab and go, the kiosks in supermarkets and such are def shutting down. According to the barista.

We’ll know more tomorrow. I just hope they remember Starbucks is an “essential service” for some of us. :)

I can't take much more of this.  I might have to back off for a while and self isolate from the internet before what's left of my sanity goes away.

The people who claim hoax about everything have really made me angry these past few days. I used to be one of them in high school, but my perspective has totally changed. Mainly because my dad had a heart transplant last December. He takes high doses of immuno-suppressant drugs and anti-rejection medications. If he got sick, it this virus may kill him. He would need to be taken off his medications to fight the virus, which would mean that he would start rejecting the heart. Especially because the duration of this illness is so long, it wouldn't be possible to maintain the heart (he has an auto immune disease that attacks his heart.) Even just the normal flu could do that. His doctor actually told him not to come to the hospital for regular heart biopsies anymore, he told us it was too risky with the virus going around. He has to temporarily quit his job because of this.

I live in MN and our cases are doubling by the day. I think it is odd how many people are claiming this is a hoax about president Trump. My uncle posted something on Facebook saying that every election ear there is a new disease, and this is just one big plot. Yep...China created a virus and Iran, Italy, etc, are killing off their own citizens, and ruining their economies just so that Trump gets out of office. Have these people not researched anything at all? I think they are in denial, and don't want to admit that this could happen to them.

Thankfully my college went online this week, so I don't need to worry about getting infected as much. It helps being such an introvert. My biggest adjustment is not being able to go shopping, I just don't wan't to risk it since I do not know the location of where the cases are. I wish we could get some more info on the locations, because that may stop people from panicking and buying everything up. Stay healthy everyone!

European update:

  • The Netherlands have closed all hotels, bars, restaurants and other catering businesses, sex clubs, sauna's, gyms and coffeeshops (despite the name, they sell weed), schools, childcare centers and sports clubs. Mosques have closed.
The government has set aside a 5.3 billion contingency fund for small and medium sized businesses that have a dearth of income due to the COVID19 measures from which they can apply for 'bridge' loans, so they can continue pay their employees during this period for example. As it is tax season, they have also been exempt from filing taxes for now, and won't be fined for filing late when the eventually are able to file.
People have been advised to keep about 1.5 meters distance from each other, for example when they are grocery shopping.
Starting tomorrow, the courts will also be closed for all but the most urgent cases.
  • Starting this morning, Germany has closed its borders with France, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Denmark, with the exception of transport (of goods) and forensic travel.
  • Austria has decreed that everyone should stay home and only have contact with housemates. People may only go out to buy groceries or medicine, or for vital work or care of others.

Central banks unveil emergency measures as coronavirus death tolls rise in Europe

Quote

The US Federal Reserve and other central banks unveiled emergency measures to prop up the coronavirus-battered global economy, as the three worst-hit European countries recorded their deadliest days of the pandemic.

The virus has upended society around the planet, with governments imposing restrictions rarely seen outside war-time, including the closing of borders, home quarantine orders and the scrapping of public events.

After the COVID-19 pandemic began in China late last year, Europe has in recent weeks emerged as the biggest flashpoint and the death toll on the continent surged over the weekend.

Italy on Sunday announced 368 deaths over the previous 24 hours, the worst single-day toll for any country of the crisis and far exceeding the deadliest day in China recorded in February.

Spain and France registered 183 and 29 new deaths respectively on Sunday, also their worst one-day tolls.

Globally, there have been more than 6,400 confirmed deaths from the virus.

With the virus infecting nearly every sector of the global economy, concerns are growing the world will be catapulted into a damaging recession, leading to stock markets enduring horror losses and wild swings.

The US Fed attempted to stem the panic with drastic measures announced before Asian markets opened on Monday, slashing its key interest rate to virtually zero in its second emergency rate cut in less than two weeks.

"What's happened with the Fed is phenomenal news," US President Donald Trump said Sunday at a regular briefing of his coronavirus task force. "I can tell you, I'm very happy."

But markets were less euphoric, the futures markets on the Dow Jones Index predicting another sharp move downwards and Asian stocks starting the day on the back foot.

"The good news is that the targeted fiscal response will become more aggressive. The bad news is that all the world's major economies will continue to effectively lock down any normalcy of economic activity for weeks if not months," said AxiCorp's Stephen Innes.

China on Monday provided more evidence of COVID-19's dire economic impacts, announcing factory output had contracted for the first time in nearly 30 years.

Industrial production shrank 13.5 percent in January and February, the government said, which was when China was enduring its most severe travel curbs and quarantine orders to contain the virus.

Stocking up on weed

Normal life is at a standstill in much of western Europe, with France ordering all non-essential businesses closed and Spain banning people from leaving home except to go to work, get medical care or buy food.

Despite Trump's insistence there is enough food to last through the pandemic, panic-buying has been seen around the world as people stock up on essentials fearing a lengthy period of enforced quarantine.

Larry Grossman, manager at a Manhattan supermarket, said he had never seen anything like it in 40 years.

"I have been through Hurricane Sandy... through 9/11, I have never seen shopping like this," he told AFP, as he restocked the store's empty shelves.

New York's mayor has ordered schools, bars and restaurants in the Big Apple to shut but is allowing take-out food.

In the Netherlands, cannabis smokers aiming to keep calm and carry on queued up outside Dutch "coffee shops" on Sunday after the government ordered their closure to beat the outbreak.

"For maybe for the next two months we're not able to get some weed so it should be nice to at least have some in the house," said Jonathan outside a "coffee shop" in The Hague.

'Really upset'

There was pandemonium at several airports as travellers scrambled to get home with countries increasingly slamming shut their borders to prevent the virus spreading.

In the US, passengers complained of massive queues as staff battled with new entry rules and stipulations on medical screening, leading some to worry they were exposing themselves to the virus in the crowds.

Joanna, a British student in Cyprus, said she was scrambling to get home, fearful of further restrictions on movement.

"I think if I stayed here and if it was a lockdown, I think I would be really upset, the fact that I could not go home and see my family," she told AFP.

There were continuing signs of improvement in China, with only four new cases recorded in Wuhan -- where the virus was first detected in December -- although imported cases rose.

And there have been heartwarming scenes around the world as people attempt to lift spirits.

In Switzerland, where cases nearly doubled to 2,200 Sunday, Geneva residents applauded, whistled and rang bells from their balconies and windows to thank health workers on the frontline.

Images of Italians singing from their balconies have also gone viral and the choir of Stockholm's Katarina church decided to livestream their performances online.

"People need something to cling on to, I think, and something to listen to," said chorister Birgitta.

Must read thread on why testing is so necessary, and what the consequences of not testing actually are.

Probably stupid questions, but not sure where else to ask if these things are true:

1. Not everyone is running a fever who has this. I saw the Miami mayor tested positive, but never had a fever. Anyone know if this is true for more patients? I'm not sure how to distinguish between this and the common cold to get tested if fever isn't present.

2. Tylenol is more effective than ibuprofen? I've seen this mentioned in a couple of places, but haven't actually seen any legit sources and articles about it (ie, not facebook or blogs). Have anyone seen any actual medical professionals saying not to take ibuprofen? If my family gets this and we're trying to treat at home, I want to take the right meds.

3. I keep seeing that hot liquids will help kill the virus in your body. I give this a lot of side eye, but thought I'd add it anyway because I keep seeing that shared around. I'm assuming it just helps soothe sore throats and maybe break up some congestion temporarily.

I need to back away from all of this for my mental health, but can't because it's too fast moving and we need to know what's happening. I keep thinking I have shortness of breath, but no, it's just my anxiety. I can breathe deeply just fine if I remind myself to do so.

I feel like we're waiting. School still isn't cancelled in my district though most of my state got on board last night. I heard a rumor last night that a branch of my company is closing till April, but no one seems to have details on that. Work hasn't given us much info at all. I work from home but that won't matter if they decide to close for a while.

This is the telegraph bullshitting. The SIAARTI, the Italian association of anesthesists, issued guidelines to manage the emergency and as you can see in this Twitter thread it says nothing like that. It says that taken into consideration the resources and the conditions of the patient the anesthesist must choose what's the best course of action in the best interest not just of that patient but also of all the other patients. That's not the same of saying that they won't care for people over 80 yo.

If I were them I'd start worrying what will happen in the UK since BoJo is not implementing any containment measures. How many ICU beds are there in the UK? Are they organising to create more of them? Hiring doctors and nurses? Buying ICU equipment? If that's not the case then UK citizens over 80 will be left to die because the British NHS won't have enough resources to treat everyone.

ETA I forgot to say that our doctors are on record saying that things aren't yet quite so bad that following the SIAARTI guidelines is necessary, but that every day we are a step closer and that's why we have been creating thousands more ICU beds.

No question is a stupid question when you're trying to understand things. As you are prone to anxiety, I would stop reading what people post on social media. All of it is just rumour, innuendo and conjecture, well-meaning or not. That is just so much noise. Just stick to what medical professionals say, and you can't go wrong.

The best advice I've heard is to simply act as if you do have the virus, if you have symptoms or not. Don't panic. Self-isolate. Adhere to the social distancing norms. Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly. Sneeze and cough into the crook of your elbow -- and change your clothes daily and wash them before wearing them again. That will prevent you from contaminating others. If everyone does this, we can keep the amount of infections to a minimum. If you feel really unwell, with chest pain and real difficulty breathing, then you should contact your doctor -- by phone at first. They will tell you what you should do next.

Stephen Miller, evil incarnate, is at the helm. Therefore I would venture to say that the cruelty continues, especially during a pandemic, and even that it's going to be amped up. People are busy looking the other way, concerned about their personal welfare, so he will be able to get away with more egregious acts.

Yes this is true for a lot of people especially young people. Up to 20% of COVID positive people have no symptoms but are contagious.

Both are meds that means both have side effects. Tylenol is bad for your liver, ibuprofen tenda to weaken your immunitary response, don't take neither if you don't have to. In case you have to consult with your doctor on which one is best for you.
