Sounds about right. Rich = access. Lots of money at stake = access.

Retired and in a nursing home? Forget it. Homeless? Not a chance.

And yeah, it's pretty fucked up.

From the last thread, talking about sick leave in low income service jobs:

"Darden Restaurants, which owns Olive Garden, the Capital Grille and others, announced a new paid, sick leave policy that gives workers time accrued with seniority"

No, that is not how you do it. Being junior doesn't make you less likely to get sick or need leave FFS. Standard sick leave across all employees, possibly after 3 month trial period.

We are having similar discussions here about casual workers (who are paid at higher rates than permanent staff, which is supposed to cover holiday and sick leave - but especially in service industries doesn't really) and whether they should be being paid to stay home. Meanwhile our government has cancelled the sickness benefit, which was a safety net payment available if you were working and became sick  and unable to work for a period. Because our government are forward thinking like that, and apparently want to be infected by their local barista who can't afford to stay home.

Pennsylvania closed all of its schools through March 30th, too.

When we were little whenever my younger brother was caught being naughty he would exclaim in his three year old voice: "I never!"

It seems Trump at 73 has not gotten past that phase yet.

Also note how he qualifies a question by a woman -- and a colored one at that --  as 'nasty'.

I'm hoping this means the Lincoln Project will do one of their devastating and well-done ads against Twitler:

I can see comparing and contrasting the quote above with excerpts from Biden's speech.

Well, I guess people are pretty bored by now so why not? it will be interesting to see if the countries that have been in lock down will have lots of babies in 9 months. I know this has happened before when people are trapped inside due to different disasters.

"Trump shook hands, patted backs and touched the microphone 31 times while declaring the coronavirus national emergency"

Spoiler

President Trump on Friday touted the work of his administration’s health experts on the novel coronavirus even as he ignored their public health advice.

Trump shook hands, patted backs and touched the microphone at the White House lectern at least 31 times Friday, the sort of behaviors health experts and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have advised against to prevent the spread of the virus.

Over the past week, Trump has interacted with or been close to at least three people who were infected with the virus or who themselves interacted with virus-infected individuals. Trump earlier this week said he does not plan to get tested for the novel coronavirus, but Friday he said he “most likely” would get tested “fairly soon.”

“We’re working out a schedule,” he said.

After inviting Walmart chief executive Doug McMillon to speak, Trump thanked him by shaking his hand. Trump then greeted Walgreens President Richard Ashworth by patting him on the back and thanked him by shaking his hand. In total, Trump shook hands four times and patted the backs of officials five times.

And in between it all, Trump touched and adjusted the White House microphone at least 22 times, according to a Fix count.

When the last executive had finished speaking, Trump offered him a handshake.

“We’ll practice that,” LHC Group Executive Vice President Bruce Greenstein said, offering Trump an elbow bump instead.

“Okay, I like that, that’s good,” Trump said, before adjusting the microphone with his hand yet again.

Not the best time to be pregnant, though, since medical facilities are likely to be filled with very sick people.

Perhaps not but even full war doesn't stop people from having babies.

Mr. Cartmann99 has decided that he's not going to risk going to the state science fair this year. :banana-dance:

His university has extended Spring Break and is providing faculty with a crash course on how to get their classes online before the students are scheduled to return.

The latest updates on coronavirus in Texas: Community spread of coronavirus has hit Texas. Texas is declaring a statewide public health disaster. There have been at least 50 known cases in the state — 11 identified at a federal quarantine site at Lackland Air Force Base and 39 elsewhere. But because community spread is in Texas, there are likely more cases that have not been identified.

Ted Cruz is extending his self-quarantine after learning that he had come in contact with a second person with the virus:

"Given that interaction, I'm consulting with medical authorities, as I did the first time," Cruz said. "But my intention is simply to extend the self-quarantine to March 17, which is a full 14 days from the interaction."

Cruz said he remains "strong and healthy" and that he has no symptoms and "very little reason to be concerned."

But a seemingly asymptomatic Lindsey Graham got tested

The office of Sen. Lindsey Graham says he has decided to self-quarantine himself and work remotely because he was in Florida at an event attended by a top Brazilian government official who tested positive for the new coronavirus.

A statement from Graham's office Thursday says Graham was tested for the virus and is waiting for the result.

The statement says Graham took the steps because of advice from his doctor.

The White House says U.S. President Trump has no plans to be tested for the new coronavirus or go into self-quarantine after attending the same events last weekend.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s communications director tested positive days after traveling with Bolsonaro to the meeting with Trump and senior aides in Florida. Bolsonaro is also awaiting test results.

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/trump-fire-pandemic-team/

Quote

Amid warnings from public health officials that a 2020 outbreak of a new coronavirus could soon become a pandemic involving the U.S., alarmed readers asked Snopes to verify a rumor that U.S. President Donald Trump had “fired the entire pandemic response team two years ago and then didn’t replace them.”

The claim came from a series of tweets posted by Judd Legum, who runs Popular Information, a newsletter he describes as being about “politics and power.” Legum’s commentary was representative of sharp criticism from Democratic legislators (and some Republicans) that the Trump administration had ill-prepared the country for a pandemic even as one was looming on the horizon.

Legum outlined a series of cost-cutting decisions made by the Trump administration in preceding years that had gutted the nation’s infectious disease defense infrastructure. The “pandemic response team” firing claim referred to news accounts from Spring 2018 reporting that White House officials tasked with directing a national response to a pandemic had been ousted.

Rear Adm. Timothy Ziemer abruptly departed from his post leading the global health security team on the National Security Council in May 2018 amid a reorganization of the council by then-National Security Advisor John Bolton, and Ziemer’s team was disbanded. Tom Bossert, whom the Washington Post reported “had called for a comprehensive biodefense strategy against pandemics and biological attacks,” had been fired one month prior.

It’s thus true that the Trump administration axed the executive branch team responsible for coordinating a response to a pandemic and did not replace it, eliminating Ziemer’s position and reassigning others, although Bolton was the executive at the top of the National Security Council chain of command at the time.

Thanks, asshole.

For a lot of Americans, it would have been a day of prayer anyway. And, as someone who would really like to see this country stand by its supposed separation of church and state, I am not happy about your declaring a "National Day of Prayer" (with caps, no less!).

There are some great answers in the thread, though.
