Advocate - largest org of hospitals health care in my area (and mine) isn't testing unless case is critical.

Chicago area won't have real numbers until there are tests and who knows when that will be.

Basketball team at my son's college is quarantined due to exposure.  He doesn't know them, but not thrilled that there have been confirmed exposure there.

I'm in SoCal. Yesterday I went into my research lab and brought my fruit flies (research organism) home with me, with extra vials and food and equipment. Yes it looks silly. Yes its kind of gross to have several hundred new pets (CONTAINED!!) in my apartment. But at least my fancy pants CRISPR-made epilepsy models won't die if we get a shelter in place order and I can't get to them.

Someone laughed at me yesterday. Last night the shelter in place order went out. I'm certainly not laughing, but I do feel vindicated.

In other news, my parents in the Midwest are finally starting to panic. Their state is behind where I am case and attention wise, but it was driving me crazy how they were concerned about my PhD progress being delayed when my WHOLE STATE was shutting down!!

Definitely! The PO is not taking any precautions with their workers as far as taking temps, wearing masks etc. The person I know who works there said one of their coworkers died yesterday, after leaving work early. They are waiting to hear cause of death. Please stay safe!

I was just dropping some stuff off at the drive through mailbox; I didn't even have to touch anything.  I didn't make it to Walgreens because the front that came through last night has given me a massive headache.

ETA my older child has been laid off until at least August with no guarantee that their place of business will ever re-open (they work behind-the-scenes in the performing arts).  And their state is about to announce shelter in place starting tomorrow.

Well - slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwly he's catching up.

And another death in Missouri - this one in Jackson County (KC area)

Boone County went from 1 case announced on Tuesday to 8 cases as of earlier today.  (math wise that's more or less doubling every day and yes it is because we are actually testing now)

They need to just go ahead and do the shelter in place already. Saw a bunch of children playing at my condo's playground. Seriously? I worry once it starts in the complex.

I'm also in a condo and feel exactly the same way.  Just stepping outside my door requires precautions and, while I can largely avoid people and not directly touch anything, it's still pretty stressful.  I hate using the elevators but can't handle steps very well (arthritis).  So I'm staying in the vast majority of the time, taking out garbage, doing laundry, and getting mail less often, and am trying to do these things during off hours when others are less likely to be around.  Don't know if/when residents would be notified in the event someone who lives, or visited here, was to contract COVID-19.  Things are largely shut down but not enough, AFAIC.  There are still some people walking around outside (without dogs) and kids playing in the park.

We're up to four metre squared per person for indoor areas recommendations. Which effectively is 1 person per lift. Schools in my state have declared Friday a pupil free day, I suspect they will shut before Wed.

A friend made the suggestion that company bailouts should be linked to the amount of tax that company paid. An expert recommended loans rather than bailouts. Personally I think companies found to be price gouging should be forcibly nationalised and their officials imprisoned.

My husband just got an extended sign off from his GP for sick leave - I've suggested he contact his manager about working from home. I hope they will go for it but the national manager is a dickhead about it. But these are Interesting Times, and hopefully things have changed.

Link to Medium article about curve flattening.

Summary of the article: Strong coronavirus measures today should only last a few weeks, there shouldn’t be a big peak of infections afterwards, and it can all be done for a reasonable cost to society, saving millions of lives along the way. If we don’t take these measures, tens of millions will be infected, many will die, along with anybody else that requires intensive care, because the healthcare system will have collapsed.

Australia cracked 1000 cases today, but pictures of Bondi beach yesterday are all over the media as proof that the public aren’t taking things seriously.

Schools are still open, and teachers are not happy, reporting things like having to bring their own cleaning products to wipe down desks between classes while students are still sharing food and pens and whatnot.

And if we needed any further confirmation at how corrupt the government is, until public outcry led to changes about 3 hours ago, casinos were exempt from the social distancing requirements.

Can't sleep . I've been in healthcare for 25 years.  Never been freaked out before, but NOW? I'm freaking. Our county health department is out of tests,  right as we saw the first confirmed case.  That tells me there are many symptomatic patients just waiting results. Those same were asymptomatic for up to 2 weeks before testing.  That's scary stuff.

Meanwhile we are working. I'm not one to panic but my head is a tornado right now. Thoughts of my family are front and center. :" what ifs" are going to take over if I'm not careful.

I guess I just need to get all this out.  Really need to sleep before another day crashes in.

Same thing was happening in Miami Beach and they're now closing the public beaches.  Common sense, apparently, isn't common enough.

Where we're currently at. We desperately need to buy time in Australia, and drop beneath the doubling every 5 days line.

It's also worrying that one of the criteria for testing is known exposure to a case or overseas travel - which means that community transmission here is almost certainly being missed.

Can you provide the source for testing criteria?  I am currently quarantined overseas, in a country that is basically in lockdown. In the city  I am visiting, there is  a mandatory curfew from 4PM-5AM. There is no work for anyone other than essential workers, and all schools and non essential businesses are closed. There are no passenger flights into the country. There are planes that come in 3 times a week. 2 are charters to the US and one goes to Amsterdam. The US government is spamming us with emails to make arrangements to get back to the US. At this point, we have decided that we are less likely to get exposed here as opposed to in the US. Plus, the authorities will test us here, if needed. We also bought medical insurance to cover us (Covid comprehensive) while we are here. We have a lovely home overlooking the ocean, but are unable to get there because  this country has us in a 15 day quarantine (7/15, today)in our arrival city, and all the roads out of town are closed anyway. Thankfully my daughter and her family live in this city. The hubs and I have decided to stay here, in South America, that is how much we do NOT have confidence in Trump or how the US government is handling this pandemic. Of course the US government can not tell us what will happen to us once we hit US soil! So I can get to FL, how about my home in CA? Who the eff knows.

ETA- I also have a form in hand, from this country’s government, to get tested for the virus, if I so choose. The US needs to get its act together!
