Joshley Madison Pt 7: O Smuggar Where Art Thou?

I'm surprised that no RU "graduates" have stepped up to talk about the prigram. Heck, even the sex worker has commented. Also, I wonder if a journalist has thought to go undercover at RU? Not to out Smuggar but to discredit the program.

I believe their manual also says they can treat Tourette's, so.... :wtf: The whole program sounds so toxic. Sure, post-rape depression, Tourette's, alcoholism and porn "addiction" (self-diagnosed by fundie standards)...I'm sure those all respond to the exact same kind of treatment. NOT. uuuuuuuggggghhhhhhh! :wtf: :disgust:

It's starting to sound like a "Fourth Reich," anybody who does not fit a mold they can "fix."

I'm surprised that no RU "graduates" have stepped up to talk about the prigram. Heck, even the sex worker has commented. Also, I wonder if a journalist has thought to go undercover at RU? Not to out Smuggar but to discredit the program.

There have been former students speaking to the press. The print version of last week's In Touch had a brief interview with one Matt Valles of Arlington Heights Illinois on page 37. He's supposed to have spent 3.5 months at RU trying to get over a heroin addiciotn. He says they called it "Jesus jail," that it was very strict but people were still using and he got high inside, that they put down other Christian groups that they disagree with. He says he eventually got help elsewhere.

Dan Parsons has been quoted a few places. He was a patient and then one of the "counselors" for a while. Libby Anne interviewed him for her story that helped break the abusive connections of the leadership:

patheos.com/blogs/lovejoyfeminism/2015/08/breaking-leadership-of-josh-duggars-treatment-center-allegedly-involved-in-sex-abuse-coverup.html

Parons also apparently spoke to Radar Online recently, emphasizing that the program is a money making scheme, and he is the source fr the info that leadership of RU are required to attend Gothard seminars, or at least were required to do so back in the 70s and 80s when he was involved:

http://radaronline.com/celebrity-news/j ... r-recover/

(not broken bc "news")

I suppose it's possible RU has broken ties with Gothard of late (would be smart to, actually, considering!) but he seems to have been influential at one time.

I haven't seen any other ex-RU speaking out but if I see them, I will post.

ETA: I totally forgot this woman, who survived rape by an RU group leader... now that could happen a lot of places but it does make one wonder about their screening process: twitter.com/samanthapfield/status/637286819223183360

Nor have I seen any journalists going undercover to investigate them. I suspect that the fee would be a lot for most magazines or newspapers to cough up! Of course there are small group RU meetings that I *think* are free, but I don't know how well those would be as a guide tot he in-house treatment.

You can also purchase their materials; however, according to the Burce Gerencser blog piece I posted upthread, they have some BS notice on them that you can't quote them at all for any purpose. He decided that was nonsense under fair use (which allows one to quote briefly if one is interpreting the work) but maybe some outlets are intimidated by that. I would sure like to hear more about their pseudo-diagnostic manual, that's for sure.

I would really like to see an extended piece interviewing other former students en masse. I think that would serve a really useful purpose--not because of OMG JOSH DUGGAR! but because this program clearly is advertising itself falsely and should be exposed. And more people are paying attention bc of the Duggar thing.

(edited to add example)

I'm gonna throw Where in the World is Joshley Sandiego in the ring for part 8's title. Since we don't actually know where he is right now.

btw, I ran across this story about RU from 2013...haven't seen it posted. Seems that even pre-Joshley there have been questions. And apparently RU has suggested they can "cure" homosexuality which.... :thumbsdown3::thumbsdown3: :angry-nono:

Right, I'm seeing legitimate medical conditions in the list above. Bulimia can actually be fatal if not treated properly (my mom practices cardiology so I know this as fact). I'm confused about how they're getting away with this nonsense.

I'm guessing that there's some religious loophole or other that protects them.

Maybe with a little J. Blume-ish emendation? (She's a J, after all):

"RU there, God? It's me, Joshly."

So many good ones but this one is mine! (With the Blume add on)

Ok, forgive me, but this is driving me CRAZY! The plural of "Duggar" is "Duggars"- no apostrophe. The plural possessive of "Duggar" is "Duggars' " as in "the Duggars' politics." "Duggar's" is ONE Duggar possessive, as in "Jim Bob Duggar's green shirt."

I don't mean to be a grammar Nazi about this, but it truly drives me nuts. Now, please get off my lawn!

RU there God? It's me, Joshley.

Lolz

I am leaning towards this one too, now.

Though maybe it ought to be: "RU there Joshley? It's me, G*D."

:wink-kitty:

Edited to fix typo.

The wages of sin are $7500 literally made me lol. That gets my vote. Or votes, because being from the Chicago area I'm assuming I'm not limited to one vote.
