Michael Pearl on the Duggars and maybe Bill Gothard

Recommended Posts

In the most recent NGJ magazine, Michael Pearl comments on the "war" on Christians (nogreaterjoy.org/articles/two-front-war-on-christianity/). There are the regular enemies, of course -- teh gayz, liberals, the gummint -- but then there are the Christian cannibals, as he calls them, such as those who criticized the Duggars after the molestation case came to light:

When the Duggars were under attack, one “righteous†Christian woman wrote, “I always knew there was something wrong with that family.†Another continued the biting and devouring with this question: “Why would they go on TV claiming to be this righteous family when they knew they were harboring this dark secret?†Yet another chided, “There is no way you can have that many children and give them the care they need.â€

I have never seen the Duggars on TV, never met them, and know very little about them. But I did follow the media assault, and I have to say I was highly impressed and proud to be a fellow believer with such an amazing family. They handled the situation with their son in the best of all possible ways. It was a godly response to a problem that affects over 50% of the homes in America, including Christian homes. That is why we wrote the two Yell and Tell children’s books.

Josh has found forgiveness through the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. If God forgives, and the victims forgive, who am I to denigrate a man for the sins of his youth? I know I will lose a lot of support over what I am saying, but I would rather go down standing than to prosper bowing beside the enemies of God at the altar of social opinion.

Wonder what he thinks of Josh now?

Pearl's additional comments on Christian cannibals sounded as though he were referring to Bill Gothard. If so, he appears to be doubling down on wife Debi's defense of Gothard last year (nogreaterjoy.org/2014/04/24/debi-pearl-weighs-iblp-situation/):

About a year ago the media jumped on another noted minister who had a long, honorable career. One woman came forward to say that the man had touched her hair and placed his hands on her shoulders when she was a teenager. Several others came forward to say they had experienced the same thing on campus as students. One woman accused him of “inappropriate contact.†Before taking the word of one woman against this fellow believer, we looked her up on Facebook. Her site was full of witchcraft and anti-Christian propaganda. Does the one she serves have an agenda against God’s servants? A friend who knows the family of the accusing girl says that her parents say she is lying about the allegations.

I do not know what the man’s heart was when he walked by and touched the hair of the girls, but I do know that the hasty, judgmental response of many Christians was disturbing. Our feed on Facebook was full of remarks from outraged, stone-throwing, professing believers. I presumed to say those judging didn’t bother checking to see if the woman who accused the man was walking in God’s light and truth. One woman posted, “It just thrilled me to see this come out; it is time to expose all these big shots who think they are something special.†It thrilled her? Again, another said, “I always knew there was something wrong with that man.†I would ask her, did you pray for the man? Were you saddened? Did it break your heart? How does God feel when we sin?

Who needs enemies when we have fellow believers ready to practice their gift of condemnation? “. . . ye bite and devour one another . . .†(Galatians 5:15).

Over 50% of homes experience familial molestation? That's news to me.

Lie. He knows that is a lie and he knows he can sell it these multi-generation homeschoolers. And they buy it without question.

TheChickWithGlasses

That sounds pretty close to victim shaming, checking the Facebook page of the accuser and then blowing it off with "witchcraft blah blah." I do wonder how he's going to justify le Smuggar being an adulterer, since molesting his sisters was a "youthful mistake." Hate the sin, not the sinner perhaps?

Maybe in Michael Pearl's world that's true.

Oh, but those parents weren't using Pearl methods properly.

I hate Michael Pearl. With the heat of 10,000 suns.

It's just a matter of time.

Also, Michael and Debbi and flat.out.liars. That is all.

That last part was for sure about Gothard because one of the women who said he did more than play footsie is no longer a Christian and Gothard defenders latched on to that.

Michael Pearl will find a way to justify any kind of heinous behavior on the part of so-called "Christian" men. Methinks Michael Pearl is covering his own ass.

And yet here is the standard, Pearl sets for any young men who want to pursue a relationship with the girls in his family:

I will give you a list of what this grandpa expects from any young man that comes, wanting to pick this lovely Rose.

It goes without saying that he must be a virgin. Furthermore, he must be absolutely innocent in regard to pornography. If he has ever been a user of porno, he can forget Laura. It will not matter that he has confessed his sins and is forgiven. David confessed and God forgave him, but he and his family continued to reap what he had sown until the day he died.

Laura will bring innocence and purity to the marriage. I do not want her to come crying to Big Papa with tales of how her husband confessed that he fantasizes about other women when they are together, or of a sordid story of how he is not satisfied with natural sex. I want her husband to be clumsy on their honeymoon. I want them to laugh about it years later — about how naive they were, about how they discovered things together, thinking they were the first to know, believing they had reached heights others have never known. I want Laura to always know that she is the first and only — including his private world of fantasy. She will never be jealous, never wonder if she measures up.

Raw pornography is not my only concern. If he has watched very much of Hollywood, he is likely to be too corrupted in his worldview to become the father of my great-grandkids. Most movies, even the ones with a G rating, communicate the porno worldview. If pornography is a disease, Hollywood is the carrier.

If your son falls to this worship of the flesh and he repents, God will forgive him. You should forgive him. I will forgive him. He can be a great missionary, a man of God, but he cannot be my grandbaby’s husband. There are plenty of marriages that do fine with second best. Laura Rose is being raised to have the very best. You can call it pride, call it narrow-minded, but don’t send your son calling on Laura Rose unless he has a pure heart.

That might just be the most arrogant and disgusting thing I have ever read. How can anyone listen to what he says and think "You are so right. You enrich my faith. Please tell me more."

Don't other people see how creepy he is being?

That poor girl will be single forever. I'm pretty sure the only way to raise such a pure person is to go full on Disney fairytale and sequester your child in a cabin in the woods with three overbearing guardians.

Yes, anyone who is so obsessed with others' sex lives, and has been so for DECADES, clearly has major problems. It's only a matter of time.

One wonders why Rebekah & her "husband" Gabe Anast dropped off the NGJ radar. They don't seem to have had anything new published in the magazine for some years nor have they been mentioned in any of the magazine's article. Mind you, the Anasts have their own special brand of wack but it's interesting they've all but disappeared from view at NGJ, except old, recycled stuff.

Also, looking at the "meet the Pearls" page (nogreaterjoy.org/about-us/meet-the-pearls/), there are some fairly recent changes, or lack thereof, worth noting :

(1) No updates at all for the Anasts -- that information has stayed the same for at least 3-4 years now

(2) Gabriel's write-up has changed. No mention of Gabriel's wife Lori or their (at last report) three kids. Here's a cached version of their blurb (http://www.zoominfo.com/p/Gabriel-Pearl/1791868453) which appears to have been replaced by the one mentioning only Gabriel:

Gabriel is a builder, hunter, and "volleyball king" of the community. Lori is right beside him on every project, from the volleyball court to the deer stand. Gabe and Lori are parents of Jocelyn, Laife and their newest addition, Joshua Gabriel.

Here's the write-up now:

Gabriel Pearl is the firstborn son of Mike and Debi. He is a leader in his community, a man of integrity, and a fine example to the many young men he employs and teaches. Gabriel is a builder, hunter, outdoorsman, and “volleyball king.â€

(3) Nathan Pearl & his family moved to Kauai last year to open a roofing supply business. Pretty far away from Tennessee although Mike & Debi visited them earlier this year and spewed their filth on the local community (nogreaterjoy.org/2015/07/27/hawaii-ministry-recap/).

(4) Shalom now has 5 kids, still with her "husband" Justin Brand, and living near Mike & Debi. Looks like they spend a lot of time helping Mike & Debi with logistics.

(5) Shoshanna still has two kids, still with her "husband" James, and living near Mike & Debi.

Haven't done a search but it looks like that only Shalom & Shoshanna are still actively involved with NGJ, including writing for the magazine.

And I snipped that as much as I could to focus on the Duggar-related issues. The full article is one giant fetishising of the poor then-newborn baby's future.

I guess Michael Pearl's reaction to child molesters has changed over the years.

Here's what his son Gabe wrote in 2007:

When I was 11 years old, I went on a mule ride with my grandparents. It was a weekend of true hillbilly fun, riding miles in the summer heat all day long with a bunch of tobacco chewing, overall-wearing, heehaw looking good ‘ole boys. It was a great time. The second day, I met this older gentleman, about 55 years old. He spoke well, was clean cut, and was better dressed than the rest of the bunch. He seemed to know my family and talked about my mom. He was definitely a good man. He said there was a nice trail around the lake that we could walk around first thing in the morning, and that we would see lots of snakes or turtles. That was all I needed to know. The next morning at daylight he tapped on my tent. I was up in a second and ready to go. It took about an hour and a half to walk around the lake. We had a great time, but I only saw one snake.

When I got home, I told my parents how much fun we had riding mules, catching perch, walking around the lake. “Walking around the lake?†they asked. “Yeah, I met this really nice old guy. We walked around the lake. It’s ok, he knows you. His name is so and so.†Their faces turned ash grey. I knew it was serious. They said he was a pedophile from way back. Other kids had charged him, but nothing had ever stuck, and they had not seen him in years.

It wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I pondered back to that time at the mule ride and the gravity of the situation. Was I not his type? I doubt it. I was just a “cubâ€, and he was a seasoned coyote. So why did I go unscathed? It’s pretty clear to me now. It’s because I was a cub, and not a fawn. Sure, the cub might have wandered away from the den for the weekend, but the coyote knew there was not a tree too high, nor water too deep, and no way to outrun the wrath of the bear—my parents. Their reputations were known abroad, and the coyote knew that to mess with this cub was a sure way to lose what he loved most—and I don’t mean his freedom.

Some of you have fawns for children, and some of you have cubs. There is a big difference between the two in the mind of a coyote. Fawns are easy prey, and there are no consequences to the coyote if he eats one. But mama bear will have no mercy for the creature that dares to mess with her cub.

If you are a parent in today’s world, it’s your responsibility to be bearish about your children. People need to know, and coyotes need to know: If you mess with my cub, you get the full bear treatment.

I guess it's OK if the molester isn't "an older gentleman?"

Aren't I too old to forget to eat lunch?
So now....do eat a late salad and be cranky before bed because I want dinner and it's too late to eat or....do I tough out the afternoon cranky at my desk and eat dinner?
      The dilemma is real.

So excited, happy. Finally I got my vaccination appointment. The first on the 26th of May , the second on my birthday.  Staying at home is no option, because I work in healthcare, with very close patientcontact. (I make mammograms). Hopefully I can relax a bit more after my vaccination and let the anxiety go.

My uncle just died from COVID. He wasn’t that much older than I am, so I kind of grew up with him. Just ten days ago my mom had been pleading with him to get vaccinated, but he wanted to wait to make sure the shots were really safe. I’m kind of devastated.

I just found out my little bonus kid is in a treatment center on a suicide watch tonight. He and I share a hobby and a couple weeks back he opened up to me that he's severely depressed and was wanting to hurt himself. I let his parents know and thankfully he had also been talking to them. I'm just heartbroken because him being in this center means that his parents had to call 911 and have him admitted and I know that was so hard for them to do. He's a young kid and has his whole life ahead of him but just wants to end it all and I don't know how to help him.

Middle aged woman with mommy issues...but missing her today.
She got so much wrong with me, but she had the best intentions and tried so hard.
She got so much right, too.  I forget that sometimes.  Sometimes I remember and dismiss it out of spite.
“They did the best they could with the tools they had.”  I forgot where I first heard that but I’ve carried it with me like a mantra since my parents passed.   They truly did.  Whatever else was missing, whatever I needed that they couldn’t give, the love was always there.

      Always.
      That’s something.
My confidence in my own abilities.  Faith in my own power.  My own strength.  They gave me that, too.
      That’s also something.
They’re why I’m messed up, but they’re also why I’m okay.

      Shit’s complicated.
She died before I figured out how smart she really was.  Sad thing is I don’t think ever figured that out for herself.
Ignore me - just crying in my car waiting to pick up my son.
