Since this thread is so dead I volunteer myself as the very lazy version of Buzzard for the Bates show.

KELLY YOU ARE NOT EVEN IN THE PLANE WHY ARE YOU MAKING SO MANY WEIRD NOISES?

I wonder how much Gelly gave their kids for a wedding. Also how they pay for it. Cause for most of this time they were pretty poor weren't they? Does anyone know how much it would cost to have a discount wedding at those sizes in that area? I'm not feeling very sleuthy tonight.

I know they apparently don't have to pay for cakes or flowers so that doesn't need to be factores in.

Also, does anyone know what Kelly studied? If she studied education that could also be a factor. A lot of these Fundie mothers just woke up and were like "I'm going to teach cause I'm a woman!!!" and they don't have a teaching bone in their body.

I remember reading this on their blog a long time ago, and I was able to find it now

"I majored in human services, and minored in special education. Gil majored in physical education, inspired by his high school coach that witnessed to him and discipled him. We both graduated from Carson Newman College. Love, Kelly"

By the way, on a extra video at UP website, they said Zach is going to police academy. Interesting!

I'm sure that definitely helps some. It drives me crazy that fundie mothers just think they're meant to be teachers because they're mothers. Ugh. TEACHING IS A REAL SKILL THAT NOT EVERYONE HAS.

In terms of the "school of life" and setting an example, plenty of people can do that. But teaching children in an academic setting? Even if it's the SOTDRT? That still takes TEACHING SKILLS. Not just a uterus.

A college education makes a huge difference even for Fundies. Who woulda though? lol

Do we know if they use a homeschool program? If Kelly makes it herself that might be why. I've seen a couple of those premade homeschool programs and they are atrocious.

It was implied that she designed the curriculum herself. Some of the kids were using workbooks and others did computer programs/video correspondence. She actually sat with Carlin (?) during her chemistry lesson and helped her balance equations.

Meanwhile I don't think we've ever heard Michelle even say "hydrogen".

More proof to me that the Bates kid would probably be slightly better off if they escaped.

People have mentioned how the Duggars were done a disservice compared to the Bates growing up on television, and they WERE. But with parents that are so utterly moronic like theirs I wonder if it would really matter lol.

Michelle's inability to teach wasn't dependent on her being on tv lol.

I think in one of the last episodes (post proposal) Kelly said they pay $10k for their daughters weddings. If the kids go over budget the difference falls on the new couple.

I actually believe Kelly's spiel about choosing homeschool because of the ability to personalize. Rather than everyone sitting at the table doing one thing they showed the kids all working on obviously different lessons. And Kelly wasn't just doing random "phonics" lessons either. The college scenes with Tori were nice too, especially when she stated she enjoyed being able to have a social life. Seeing her attend real classes (seemingly without a chaperone but who knows) and talk to non family members was refreshing.

I thought that Addalee's hearing problem was going to be mentioned on the show, but it wasn't. Or did I miss it?

And even if she did have a chaperone, it still was a great experience for her. I hope she meets as many people as possible because one of those kids is bound to seek a different life and the bigger support network outside of Gothard she can have the better her chances.

They use Abeka, Teaching texts, Apologia, and a variety of others. I read on her blog a while ago when she used to write it they have tried a variety of curriculums.Unlike Duggars with switched on schoolhouse only.

I thought it was a nice compliment to his wife. Not too many fundie men say anything nice about how smart their wife is.

But, Tori turned right around and said it wasn't biology, it was her work and studying. So, good for Gil for complimenting his wife on something that really matters, and good on Tori for setting it straight. No one even implied Jesus in anything, which was refreshing as hell.

Yes, and I was snarking on the fact that they often bring up Jesus in everything and they can be anti science about so many topics. I wasn't being literal.

I haven't watched tonight's episode yet but I'm thrilled to hear that Zach is going to police academy. It sounds like Kelly and Gil have attempted to give their kids a decent education.

Do you remember when the Bates were shown on a 17/18 KAC show for the first time? All the girls looked like Laura Ingalls, my god those dresses were hideous! I also remember Nathan saying how bad it is to have a computer ("because of pornography and stuff"). They were as sheltered as the Duggars used to be many years ago but they have become so much more worldly. I doubt it has anything to do with their show. I guess Gelly have realized that they kids become adults and sheltering them too much won't prepare them well for the future. Gelly are not stupid (or at least Kelly is not stupid. I have my doubts about Gil but we all know that Kelly wears they trousers in their house) and they seem to adjust things if necessary.

Doesn't Michaella study education? I think she said it in one episode of the 1st season.

I remember think sheeesh these Bates make the Duggars seem tres chic!

I agree that the show had less to do with it than other aspects of life. The show if anything wouldn't push them into a worldly direction because want to keep them different. My guess of contributing factors:

- seeing the Duggars and other families looking less frumpy.

- Gelly not having the time or energy to clamp down, plus they have to keep the kids still marketable to prospective mates-- and who wants to hook up with a prairie girl

- having more money and the ability to have experiences

- having less time to sew matching outfits

etc etc

Bates are the tricky ones because you think ahh they're harmless enough... look how loud they are... Kelly seems engaged with the kids... they let the courting couples have alone-ish time and private conversations, but we all know they are not.

Always wonder why Gil was high up IBLP and not JB. What doesn't JB have a bigger role?

Pure speculation-- Gil is a lot more likeable than JB. Not that I have met anyone, but JB (and Michelle for that matter) strike me as the Regina George of fundies (which could explain why only one of their kids married within ATI). Popular on the surface, but in reality they have frenemies instead of friends. The Duggar parents strike me as the type to give you their shirt off their back then later gossip about how unprepared you are because you didn't bring a shirt.

(I don't think most of the kids are this way--- I can see that some of the Duggar and Bates kids have formed genuine friendships).

I can only repeat what I've posted before: The big difference is that Gil and Kelly have a healthy relationship. Actually, I think Gil admires her. The way he looks at her, he'd make a great fundie wife  No really, I think that's the cornerstone of raising emotionally healthy kids. Both are way more genuine about their sentiments and feelings, which makes for a home in which the kids are not afraid to show emotion.

JB, however, is a controlling, dominant patriarch with an ego the size of a giant and Michelle is an emotionally stunted, cold stepford-wife with a baby voice.

Their fundamentalist believes may be the same, but their general behavior as emotional humans couldn't be more different.

Plus, Bates parents both enjoyed higher education. I'm afraid JB and M don't even know how to spell that.

The reason why they're friends or frenemies is probably that they're happy not to be the only freaks with an extraordinary number of kids. Sometimes people's friendship wouldn't have a basis if it wasn't for similarities in lifestyle that no others share. I guess the Bateseseses feel a slight obligation to keep the status quo as the Duggars have payed for their house addition, and the latter will continue wallowing in the feeling of being the sponsors.

I am sorry that I didn't make myself clearer about Lawson in the Bahamas. I have been following his Instagram for a long time--what I've noticed is that he never makes any references to working. You would think that a small business owner like Lawson might want to promote his business every once in a while. His life seems to be one field trip, sporting event and golf game after another, with a very occasional singing gig (usually unpaid by all appearances) and apparently no pursuit of any sort of post-high school education or training.

Being in the Bahamas seems to be just the latest stop in Lawson's laidback life.

My speculation is that Gil is the type who will mindlessly go along with whatever the fuck Bill wants while Jim Bob would want more power and control. Gothard only wants people he can control and who will never, ever, EVER question him. I think Jim Bob would want to push his ideas and try to gain power while Gil will just sit back and let Gothard do his own thing.

As an adult, I have hearing problems. I had a lot of ear infections as a child. My ears have lots of scar tissue in them. I have hearing aids but don't wear them except to work. They are the BTE kind and rub on my glasses which cause me to hear static. Most insurance companies in the U.S. will not cover hearing aids for adults. I want to get the in the ear kind but can not afford it right now. I have a savings fund for them but it will take a while because good hearing aids cost thousands of dollars. I hate being an adult sometimes.

I would like the bates to show how important hearing aids are for young adults/ adults. But, I doubt they will.

While I think that the Batesese are just as bad as the Duggars in terms of their beliefs, I do agree that Gil and Kelly have a genuinely healthy emotional connection with each other and it shows in the kids too. They met when they were older and in college while JB and Michelle were much younger plus their relationship seemed to be rooted in some hang ups - JB the nerd getting the pretty cheerleader, big boost to the ego and Michelle the emotionally fragile young girl who needed him.

While I think the Bateseses and Duggar kids are genuine friends, I always felt the relationship between the parents was more along the lines of frenemies. I get a sense of competition between JB and Gil and I think J'chelle and Kelly just barely tolerate each other.
