Inspired by the movie thread and Alecto's post about Lilith Fair turning good girls gay. Let's say that there's a giant homeschool conference and we can slip some tunes into the room where all of our favorite fundie girls are staying. Pick a song to contribute, feel free to link it if it's on youtube.

Extra points for feminist themes, riot grrrl, or defrauding content.

I have to start out with Ani Difranco's "Not a Pretty Girl"

Money lyric - "I ain't no damsel in distress, and I don't need to be rescued. So put me down, punk."

Tori Amos, Icicle.

This song is about masturbating in her room while her father was leading Bible Study downstairs. She is a fundie-lite preacher's daughter. btw, I saw this live two years ago and it was amazing. She is so beautiful, I kinda love her.

By miss Dolly even :)

I guess for Kelley Bates-this song reminds me of her for some reason-the style, lyrics, really. But SAHDs could be inspired for sure.

In three posts we got Tori Amos, Janis Joplin, and Dolly Parton. I :romance-heartbeating: all of you.

ETA: tabitha2's Dolly got me thinking about country music. This can't be complete without Loretta Lynn's ode to birth control - "The Pill."

Women like Dolly and Loretta really lived what they sang

''And ones on the way...''

I'm glad I'm not the only closet Dolly lover around here.

How about this one? Babes in Toyland... I guess you could call them riot grrrls. I suspect this one might especially appeal to those SAHDs who are miserable.

For Tori Amos, I'm going to have to go with Silent All These Years.

"My scream got lost in a paper cup/do you think there's a heaven/where the screams have gone?/I got 25 bucks and a cracker/do you think it's enough/to get us there?"

Seconding cate's suggestion. I hadn't thought of it, but that's a very accessible song with a message that I'm sure would resonate. Loving some of the suggestions in this thread :)

This thread has a severe Sleater-Kinney deficiency. Let's address that.

It doesn't take much to imagine the lyrics being sung by a SAHD getting the fuck out of Fundieville.

Nick Cave is not only defrauding, but I submit this snippet of lyrics for proof that SAHDs need to be introduced to Mr. Cave:

O say goodbye to the little girl tree.

O you know that I must say goodbye

To the little girl tree.

This wall I built around you

Is made out of stone-lies.

O little girl the truth would be

An axe in thee.

O father look to your daughter

Brick of grief and stricken morter.

With this ring

This silver hoop of wire

I bind your maiden mainstream

For some reason, the first song that pops into my mind is "All-American Girl" by Melissa Etheridge.

Joan Jett - Bad Reputation (which I admit I only heard through the Shrek soundtrack)

I suspect these girls are quite hung-up on their reputations...could be good for them.

There are so many more ideas floating around my brain that I keep losing, argh! Definitely musicals, Defying Gravity from Wicked would be great:

I think it would be hilarious if they heard some other songs, for example the Book of Mormon soundtrack, but sadly I think a lot of the irony would fly right over their heads and the shock factor might be too much, alas.

Also, it might be nice for them to hear Christian rock type music, because they might realize that that style of music isn't inherently evil, so they might feel more relaxed experiencing different kinds of music. I'm not sure how to put this exactly, but I think if they found the lyrics in line with a lot of what they were taught, it would help them to realize that not everything that was forbidden was actually against God, or something. Am I making sense here?

There was a garden

In the beginning

Before the fall

Before Genesis

There was a tree there

A tree of knowledge

Sophia would insist

You must eat of this

Original sin?

No, I don't think so

Original sinsuality

Original sin?

No, it should be

Original sinsuality

oh, just for shock value, let's toss in Liz Phair's "flower":

also, i'd toss in the smiths' "frankly, mr shankly":

I have tried to embed it, and failed miserably, so I'll just put a link and the lyrics. My choice: Iris DeMent, Let the Mystery Be.

Everybody's wonderin' what and where they all came from.

Everybody's worryin' 'bout where they're gonna go when the whole thing's done.

But no one knows for certain and so it's all the same to me.

I think I'll just let the mystery be.

Some say once you're gone you're gone forever, and some say you're gonna come back.

Some say you rest in the arms of the Saviour if in sinful ways you lack.

Some say that they're comin' back in a garden, bunch of carrots and little sweet peas.

I think I'll just let the mystery be.

Everybody's wonderin' what and where they all came from.

Everybody's worryin' 'bout where they're gonna go when the whole thing's done.

But no one knows for certain and so it's all the same to me.

I think I'll just let the mystery be.

Some say they're goin' to a place called Glory and I ain't saying it ain't a fact.

But I've heard that I'm on the road to purgatory and I don't like the sound of that.

Well, I believe in love and I live my life accordingly.

But I choose to let the mystery be.

Everybody's wonderin' what and where they all came from.

Everybody's worryin' 'bout where they're gonna go when the whole thing's done.

But no one knows for certain and so it's all the same to me.

I think I'll just let the mystery be.

I think I'll just let the mystery be.

Yay funny thread! So I have a special song for Bria C. Love Story by Taylor Swift!

"I am not a big fan of Taylor Swift, no offence to Taylor Swift fans. But despite her good looks, great talent, and catchy tunes; the immoral songs she sings tells you about her personality. The only honorable thing about the lyrics to this songs-It is great the guy went back to the dad. And like I question this song's motives, and Taylor Swifts; I have to question myself too. Am I doing, singing, thinking and acting like God wants me to? Sometimes as daughters who are set apart from the world, we tend to sway to the world's ways every now and then. Just to fit in a tiny bit. I know I do sometimes. Perhaps liking non-christian singers is just one way of swaying to the world's ways."

This thread has a severe Sleater-Kinney deficiency. Let's address that.

Coming across a fellow Sleater-Kinney fan never fails to thrill me. If I had a time machine I would use it to see one of their shows.

Little Babies is another good one for the SAHDs.
