What movies CAN the Duggars watch?

I don't think I can bring myself to see what the Duggars did to Edelweiss. The awesome Theodore Bikel (the original Broadway Captain von Trapp--and yes, I saw that original production because I'M OLD!) came to my daughter's high school to give a very impassioned speech about the need for arts education (something the Duggars would probably hate) and he gave a special performance with the chorus. They closed with Edelweiss and it was so incredibly moving. I was a blubbering mess, something my daughter managed to see from the stage, even though I was waaaay back in the auditorium. ("Mom, were you CRYING?!? OMG, I'm so embarrassed...") I don't think I bear hearing it Duggar-ized.

I don't EVER want to think of the Duggars 'singing' this song when I see Christopher Plummer singing it in the movie, so I think I'll pass on that link, too. :?

Would they be allowed to watch other things that Michael Landon Jr. has made, like the Love Comes Softly series? I watched the first one because he was Michael Landon's son (not knowing his beliefs) and then went :S "Aw, no not another Christian Movie!". Though I do think Saving Sarah Cain wasn't so horrible, considering. I figure one has to view them much like Lifetime movies...you know they are going to be horrible and trite when you begin, they're kind of a genre onto themselves.

Would they be allowed to watch Amish Grace?

They might be allowed to watch Amish Grace, but I can see them possibly using the detail about the Amish schoolhouse as a way of making the kids fear schooling outside the home. I liked the first Love Comes Softly movie, but the rest movies weren't great. I liked Amish Grace because it had good acting from Kimberly Paisley and Tammy Blanchard. I've found the acting in Lifetime movies to be a tad better than a lot of the Hallmark Channel movies.

So apparently they do watch Bambi http://parentables.howstuffworks.com/fa ... pgn=fbtlc1 . Apparently only the girls can get emotional when Bambi's mother dies, because us women folk are just like that

"It makes me cry too. So I'm in the same boat. I'm right there with you." We girls are much more emotional about it. The boys are just all about the drama. Jackson's still tender enough, though and I could tell it bothered him, too."

Boys aren't allowed to cry. Jackson's apparently still in training on this topic.

I wonder what was wrong with the original lyrics. I love that song. (Original recipe, not the Duggar's "hungry girl" version where they striped it of all flavor and added some fake cheese)

I just finished subjecting myself to this, and that was several minutes that neither my eyes, my ears or my brain will ever get back. People have been given until sunup to leave town, for less than what they did to this song. Do the world a favor, Duggars: DON'T SING!

I looked up the Buttercream gang on wikipedia. OH LORD!!! I watched a few minutes of it on youtube. Its awful!!! The Buttercreamers? Seriously? I see potential for some Mormon do-gooder based porn from that one.

Anyhoo, there's dancing in Sound of Music and Prince of Egypt (one or two scenes?). No matter how wholesome and family friendly the movie there is always something that would violate the umpteen rules that the Duggars and Gothard have imposed on their children. So many movies feature tiny bits of dancing or independence thoughts from women.I can't imagine even an Amish based movie because then it would validate that other types of Christianity are valid.

I think that they maybe watch cheesy biblical cartoons, and maybe some of the humorless and musicless Kirk Cameron movies. I imagine that they allow the Kirk movies only because they want to ingratiate themselves with him and his fame.

Its really sad how isolated the kids are despite the travel they have done. At least if they could watch television a little bit they could be exposed to something more real than the artificial confines of their household.

I liked The Buttercream Gang when I was really young. When I was 15 or 16, my friend and I found a VHS copy in my house. We watched and realized how awful it was. Another thing to note about the FFFF company was that they also managed to set up programs in public schools, in which copies would be distrubuted to every kid to take home and watch. If the kid's families wanted to keep their copies they had to pay and if they didn't the copies had to be returned to the school.

The Duggars and their ilk take all the fun out of life. Nothing is worth watching unless it has some kind of relgious message. Why not watch something for sheer entertainment? I loved "Savanah Smiles" movie from the 80's about the little affluent girl who runs away from home because of lack of attention and ends up with two crooks. That would likely be 'rebellion' in the Fundie eye. The "Christy" series may be even too raunchy for them since she actully picked her own men. Edited to add "Gone with the Wind" most defintley would be out of the picture because of romantic scenes. It is strange how they are more afraid of their kids being defrauded by a little romance than a gun picture or turkey shoot. you can be more spirtually enlightend by secular entertainment than Sherwod pictures.

i remember Savanah Smiles and I cried the first time I saw it. Fundies would hate that movie. I can maybe see the Duggars liking the film adaptations of Where The Red Fern Grows.

"Yours, Mine and Ours" - the original

"With Six, You Get Eggrolls"

"Black Beauty"

"Heidi"

"March of the Penguins"

"Parent Trap" - the original

"Tom Sawyer"

"Swiss Family Robinson"

I am about the same age as JimBob and Michelle and thought back to movies I watched as a kid.

"Gone With the Wind" - for the older offspring to discuss what happens to independent women...

"Sybil" - never! but I did watch it when I was too young and had nightmares

"Star Wars" - nope

"Indiana Jones" - nope

Dreadful.

Even though this was several years ago, Josiah looks like he's in physical pain having to do this and Twin 2 so bored, he can't be arsed to stand up.

One of the girls you can hear in the background has a gorgeous voice! I think it's Jana, because every video of the girls singing that she's in, you can hear that voice.

Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (not the Johnny Depp one)

That wasn't allowed at our house because the kids were disrespectful.

My husband was raised fundie-lite and he was allowed to watch very little. I remember my shock when he told me he wasn't allowed to watch The Wizard of Oz as a kid because it had witches in it. His movie selection was limited to Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (I guess there is nothing wrong with men kidnapping women to be their wives), The Sound Of Music, and a few old Disney movies (but not even all of those. Little Mermaid would have been out because of Ursula. Anything with magic/witchcraft/not rated G was an automatic no).

I can't tell you how much this shits me off, when I hear about fundies censoring The Wizard of Oz because eleventy!! witches!! DO THEY NOT UNDERSTAND THAT THE BOOK WAS INTENDED TO BE A PROTESTANT MORALITY TALE? IT IS A FUCKING ALLEGORY PROMOTING THE IDEA OF FAITH OVER WORKS!

Of course, I've only heard fundies say they won't let their kids watch The Wizard of Oz (or Harry Potter, which also deals in Christian ideas/ iconography - the STAG is Harry's Patronus? FUCK!) which tells me they're too fucking stupid to know it's a novel, much less that the good/ bad witches function as literary devices, not as advertisements for the occult. What will their kids think when they encounter Macbeth? Oh yeah, it's not like they'll ever engage with any text over a primary level.

Sorry, I have no idea why this annoys me so much. Guess it's the way they embrace ignorance and piss all over education, even materials which support their own ideas.

Seriously... it's TERRIBLE. That is ALL we were allowed to watch when we got to watch movies at school. This was public school, mind you! Seriously? It got old a couple minutes into the first viewing. Cheesy crap. I used it as an opportunity to catch a nap or read. Haha

I think it's pretty safe to say that fundies don't get subtle things like allegory and plot devices. To be perfectly honest Dim Bob and Mullet probably wouldn't understand those concepts if they snuck up and smacked the upside the head with a clue by four.

If you tried to explain it to them, they'd probably say you were a temptation of Satan. If you tried to explain what an obvious Christian allegory books like the Narnia series are they'll probably say witches and magic are evil so they won't believe it. They don't have any critical thinking skills, so it's easier for them to just ban all magic references. Even though when you think of it, Jesus is portrayed as pretty magical in the Bible, with all those miracles.

In the episode of "18 kids..." where they went to the Christian film festival, they said they watch the Andy Griffith show, and that their favorite movies are Fireproof, Facing the Giant, the Sound of music, Flywheel, and Sergeant York. The only one I've seen of those movies is the Sound of Music, and I would have thought the Captain kissing Maria without even being engaged yet would have been enough to send the Duggars running. They've mentioned before that they watch "Life at the Pond" shows. I've seen two of those and thought they were awful. Cheesy stories and bad animation. Ugh. I've got nothin against a good moral story but It can be done with so much more quality.

I noticed in the "Duggar dating rules" episode (part 3/3 on YouTube) Josh and Anna were going on a date shortly after getting engaged and obviously had to take a chaperone. But they said they had to trade Jinger for someone older because the movie they were going to see didn't allow anyone under 18. I was a little surprised they'd be going to see something presumably R-rated after all their hemming and hawing about clean movies. Thoughts?

I do not believe the kids have ever watched the original "Cheaper by the Dozen." Seriously, the girls completely disobeyed their father, cut their hair, lusted after the lifeguard. Plus, the mother was a well-educated engineer. That family, and it was shown in the movie, valued education. I just can't imagine, even though Michelle wrote recently she rewarded her children by letting them watch this movie, that they actually would get to watch this movie.

Anyway, that article Michelle wrote, "Movie Night at the Duggars," completely had to have been written by a ghost writer.

There was a movie about about 15 years ago called Wide Awake. I remember it was about a little boy whose grandfather had passed away and he was questioning the existence of God. He attended a Catholic school. It was on the other night on GMC which I believe is a Christian network channel on Comcast. And they all saw Soul Surfer, about the girl whose arm was bitten off by a shark, a couple of years ago. I'd say these two movies were more mainstream movies with a Christian theme rather than movies like Fireproof and Facing the Giants.

They went to an unrated move, not an R movie.

Speak of the devil, Wide Awake is on right now on GMC. I saw it years ago on another movie channel, I thought it was a very sweet film because of the bond between the boy and the grandfather. There was a period when several indie companies were making films with Catholic characters like Saint Ralph and Stolen Summer which was about a Catholic boy befriending the dying son of a rabbi. I also remember an indie movie with Ed Harris and Ann Heche. Ed played a priest who was investigating miracles that people were attributing to deceased mother of Ann's character. It wasn't a family friendly movie, it was gritty. Another recent movie that has religion as one of the themes is Into Temptation with Kristin Chenoweth and Jeremy Sisto. It also isn't a family friendly film because one of the lead characters is a prostitute with a bad past. It is a good flick and I recommend it.

I wonder if Duggars were saying Nike throughout Soul Surfer. I still get laughs from the fundie bloggers who kept bashing Soul Surfer because of the bikinis. I got give the Duggars some credit for at least allowing their kids to watch some Christian movies. Steve Maxwell would never allow his kids to watch those movies.

I don't think they could watch Prince of Egypt. Some of the scenes would be too defrauding. Moses being bathed by the women, Zipporah's arms and thighs, dancing in Heaven's Eyes, when Moses whispers to Zipporah before he finds the Burning Bush (she totally had messy sex hair*), Zipporah standing up for herself, Miriam yelling at Aaron and standing up for herself, and the Midianites not being Jewish (if they know that).

I forget if Duggars/Gothard is against interracial marriage because I think they drew Zipporah to reflect her supposed Cushite heritage. She has darker skin and slightly different facial features than Moses.

(*You can tell I love this movie waaaay too much)
