Perhaps a bit out-dated - but on the other hand, those guys are usually a few decades, if not centuries, behind.

seems pretty spot on to me :D Godless, indeed. Except I can't make out the small print on Benelux and Croatia, and on the credits - where is it from?

Spain as the Holy Land cracks me up just because I happen to know that a lot of their cultural and architectural features today are a result of Muslim control for ~300 years.

Right, but the Christians defeated the Moors (who were in Spain for 800 years) and went on to establish (by brute force and various horrors) a unified Catholic nation.

I love that it says "under gay occupation," hee!

i grew up catholic and even though i don't practice, I find this offensive. Please don't post this type of stuff. It makes me stuff words into my grandmother's mouth and I know she didn't see Jesus or God saying this rubbish

It's a snark board, and as far as things that could be construed as offensive that appear here ... this is pretty low on the list. I don't know what my Catholic grandmother would have had to say about it, but I also don't particularly care. Just because it was her religion doesn't make it more sacred and therefore off limits for snarking and commentary.

As a practicing Catholic, albeit a rather unenthusiastic one at the moment, I have to agree with BlueChair. First of all, there's somewhat of an element of truth to this--the Vatican does have a tendency to view people and countries in very narrow-minded ways like this. And second, even though I'm Catholic, I have a sense of humour, and most of the other Catholics I know have one, too. They'd laugh at this just as much as I did. I wouldn't mind seeing the US version of this map. How does the Vatican categorise the different areas of the US? Now that would be hilarious!

I'm Catholic, I even still go to church on more occasions than Christmas and Easter, and I laughed out loud. Plus, this is a snark board. Roll your eyes and move along.

The Vatican = people who are catholic.

I think most people recognize the difference between what the high-and-mighty leadership believes and what the common folks who practice the religion believe.

On some level, I've gotta agree though, that this is a snark board. Somehow being here saying that THIS is the line is very much. It's very much Issac Hayes being OK w/ voicing South Park's mockery of, well, everything for how many years before coming in all "There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends, and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins. As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."

My own beliefs are pretty roundly criticized on FJ on a regular basis. No cow is sacred.

I'm a former Catholic, not sure how or why anyone could get offended by it? Its not like anyone truly believes this or are even saying Catholics believe this. I would assume the point sort of being is if you are ignorant enough to believe these generalizations on the map, you deserve to be snarked on and thus need to educate yourself better about the world we live and the people in it. ie the way fundies or anyone who doesn't believe what you believe must be frigid, sex addict assassins!

Can't believe I am explaining a funny! Stop thinking too much into it!

Would you be offended if I showed this map saying this is all Americans know about Europe?

Europe-According-to-USA.jpg

We all know most of Americans are wonderfully educated and know far more than this map, its just a very small minority who might think this, and deserve to be snarked on accordingly... (Hope this made some sense! Not trying to offend anyone, just trying to explain somehow to stop any drama and help, but probably should just slink off lol.)

Hilarious. Although I would substitute Bjork for Iceland and Hitler (or maybe Gestapo or Ex-Nazis) for Germany. I've never associated Germany with particularly dirty porn. NL as Sodom is brilliant.

It seems a little extreme to get offended by this. For one thing, it doesn't seem like anyone (either the makers of this map or the FJ crowd) are saying that this is what your grandmother said, or what Jesus, or God said. It's pretty clearly marked out that this is aimed at the Vatican. If you really want to be offended by something, look at some of the stuff that the Pope actually says about Islam, the spread of Catholicism through imperialism, the usefulness of condoms, etc.* If you truly believe that everything that is attributed to the Vatican is indirectly attributed to all Catholics, including your Catholic relatives, then you should be offended that your relatives are being smeared with some pretty ignorant and damaging stuff by old Ratzinger.

* You can probably see that my references are pretty old, feel free to update this list with some more recent bullshit.

I think you might be overestimating how wonderfully educated average Americans are! I've been living in Scandinavia for a few years and when I go home to the U.S. I get all sorts of lovely questions about what it's like living under communism  One relative actually told me that her pastor had said in his sermon the previous Sunday that the country where I am currently living is the most godless country on earth. She wanted to know how I'm handling it. Um, just fine, thanks?

And while I'm one to see godlessness as a perk, if he thinks Northern European countries with a recent history of having a (Christian!) state church are more godless than, say, North Korea, then methinks his godlessness meter is broken.

Yeah, unfortunately, in some parts of the US, this map imight be just a little closer to the mark than you would think. :?

Oh, crap! My oldest daughter has been in Scandinavia for 3 years and will be there for at least 3 more. I guess I better tell her to come home from the godless country she is living in, give up on her education and wait for a headship...oh wait, that would mean coming back to socialist Canada! Oh well, we are a family of confirmed athiests, except for my husband who can't quite shake those last threads of Catholicism so, I guess it's too late anyway.

Seriously, whatever happened to live and let live?

Yay, my ancestors are godless, along with being promiscuous AND frigid. No wonder I'm a mess!

I also have Belgian ancestry...but unfortunately the font is too small for me to view.
