Pretty sure he was in Nepal for all of their courtship. I know he came home during the engagement, I think he may have gotten a job with Walmart just after the engagement or just before they got married. It didn't last long.

Derick took a lot of time off to be filmed with the Duggars and go on trips with them. I can't imagine he was a valued emp!oyee.

As @Carm_88 said, he went straight from undergrad to a mission trip in Nepal. The Walmart job was a year, max. Just enough time for Jill to give birth on the nice health insurance.

Also, I'm not trying to advance the narrative that Jeremy will somehow be Jinger's savior. (I got burned before by Derick and his seemingly dorky-sweet nature and his practical degree from a real school). For all I know Jinger is locked in a cage somewhere in Laredo. I just think the odds of Jeremy moving to Arkansas to submit to JimBob's authority are pretty low.

Anecdote time! I have a friend who comes from a wealthy family where two out of four adult children receive significant financial support from their parents, into their early 30s at this point. And this isn't like the Rockefellars or the Trumps where every kid gets a trust fund without any sweat. It's more like, parents with grueling corporate jobs working past retirement age so that Jr. can keep pretending to be in grad school for an unemployable degree.

These parents also use money as a means of control. My married, adult friend can't really do anything that costs more than $50 without getting money from her parents, which is weird when you've been a legal adult for more than a decade. Even in high school most of us had some babysitting cash at least!

Anyhow, what distinguishes the two siblings who are still making hefty withdrawals from the Bank of Mom & Dad from the two who aren't is that the moochers have never managed to support themselves, not even for a month. They both got fine arts degrees, which is cool, but for most people that either means enduring crappy material circumstances for prolonged periods or at some point realizing you're going to have a get a day job or some more practical training. These two were supported well beyond a "reasonable" period, and never learned those lessons.

And so while my friend is pretty self-loathing about having no financial independence, she doesn't know any other way and because of the controlling nature of her parents and the fact that she made so many major decisions on the basis of knowing that support was always there (two impractical degrees, a spouse with minimal income potential), she's not particularly equipped to make an escape - emotionally, financially or skills-wise.

While she’s closest to her sisters, Jinger is also making new friends in her community. “I’ve definitely connected with the ladies here, and they have been so gracious.”

In the PEOPLE article, I actually find it interesting how they refer to those "new friends" as just ladies, apparently. Usually when you're making "new friends", it's about meeting all sorts of new people in general: female, male...even both? *shocker* And of all races, backgrounds, orientation, etc...too.

Oh wait, that's right. We're talking about the Duggars - who aren't part of the real world like the rest of us. So much for Jinger "expanding her horizons".

I dunno.

Jeremy's probably not rolling in dough as a pastor, but he is 29 and has actually monetarily supported himself for at least 6-7 years. He might not be willing to give up the freedom, and he's probably smart enough to realize that JimBob is not going to be able to support all his adult children and their mushrooming families into eternity.

The other spouses had/have no options:

  • Ben married Jessa as a teenager with no degree or work experience. Now he's about to be a father of two in his early 20s, still with no marketable degree or work experience beyond odd jobs for his FIL and a reality TV career. (OK, I remember he got an associate's in something a while back but unless that's in a medical field, it's not worth much).
  • Anna is mother of four with no degree or work experience, and an unemployable lout of a husband.
  • Derick has an accounting degree, sure. But prior to marrying Jill he had never actually worked an office job, which can be a difficult transition, especially for those of us with wanderlust (I know of what I speak). And he clearly did not take to it well.

I don't think any of the married couples are hurting for money, I'm sure they get a decent amount from TLC and as much as it looks like Jim Bob exudes control over everything, I personally think he lets his kids (once they are of age) have their own bank account where they are paid directly for their participation in the show, book deals, speaking engagements etc...Josh had a pretty decent gig in DC for awhile so even though he's not employed now , something tells me he still has left over funds from that, and his time on TV. The men the girls married are definitely less lucrative than they are.  Anna is in the best position of her life & she knows it. She is no dingbat. She is a woman scorned with no prenuptial. If I were her, I'd make my demands. Jim Bob would give her his entire life savings to keep her mouth shut.

Not sure about Josh's stash. He spent quite a bit on Ashley Madison, and DC living isn't  cheap.

I thought Anna had some sort of training in teaching. Don't know if it's a degree but I thought it was mentioned that she had some sort of training?

Josh wouldn't have made enough from the DC job to still be living off of it. Even if he made 100k, he spent a lot of it just living there while they rented that huge home. They lived in an area with a much higher cost of living than Arkansas. I also bet Josh burned through a lot of money hanging out at nice, expensive restaurants with his hate group friends. I can see him trying to keep up with them.

Although I am sure the girls have some money, I don't think it's much. Their book may have been a best seller but it doesn't take much to get on a best seller list anymore. I  doubt they even made back the advance. Plus, when you take into account they have to split the money between themselves and the real writer of the book, pay taxes, agents, managers, lawyers, etc., they were probably lucky to make a few thousand each. Unless you have a James Patterson or JK Rowling type best seller and don't have to share the money with your siblings, you will likely need another source of income.

They probably only got a few thousand for speaking events and those were few and far between. I would guess they don't make big money from the show because they have no leverage. They can't threaten to leave TLC if they don't get more money because no one else wants them. I would be shocked if any of them had $20k in the bank.

They can save some money because Jim Bob gives them free housing and likely pays utilities. Hell, I wouldn't doubt Jessa does her grocery shopping at the TTH. Realistically, no one other than Jim Bob and Michelle are in good financial shape. Without the show, the savings will run out and Jim Bob cannot afford to support everyone forever.

in the original series shown on tv at the time they made mention of this more than once. They pushed it like she was college educated. Well now we all know about online and clown college. lol Anyway I went back and watched the show a couple of years ago from DVD (not mine) and they have whited washed over that . They make a little mention of it, but that' it. So i am thinking she once sat at a table with kids being homeschooled and she is now teaching certified, the way Jana is a concert pianist. lol

I don't even remember this story line, but I'd be willing to bet all the furniture in my apartment that whatever kind of "certification" she has would never allow her to set foot in a real school. And quite frankly, even if she could, there's not a lot of money in teacher's helper-type gigs.

The only way Anna could get a job beyond minimum wage retail at this point would be if someone took pity on her. Even then, I can't imagine her getting anything better than some kind of $10-12/hr clerical gig, which doesn't exactly support four kids, even if Jana is babysitting for free.

I think Jessa takes everything from the TTH - laundry, pregnancy tests, everything -I bet that wasn't even her in that grocery store when she posted that picture of Spud in a store.

I finally figured out who Jeremy looks like: he reminds me of a young Fidel Castro. He was quite the hot dish back in the 50s and early 60s.

Josh also had the FRC job for slightly under two years. That's not a lot of time to save up, especially when you're supporting a wife and three kids in an expensive area. I'm going to guess he was making somewhere in the upper 5 figures, which for most families in the DC area is enough to get by with some middle class trappings, but you're not going on vacations to Europe or becoming independently wealthy any time soon, let alone in 23 months.

But let's say in some wild scenario he managed to tuck 100k away (which I highly, highly doubt would have been possible)...that's still not going to support a wife and 4 kids for more than 2-3 years, tops, even in Arkansas. With JimBob's free housing that could maybe stretch to 4-5 years if you put the kids on Medicaid.

On the topic of seborrheic dermatitis, I am much improved after using miconazole nitrate... literally generic Monistat 7. I was looking up improbable hair growth aids the year before my wedding, and found some people swear by it. Can not find a solid reason why it would work besides peoples' anecdotal evidence, but also found people were using it to treat their dermatitis, on the assumption that yeast was contributing. Hey, why not? Yeast is yeast.

I watered it down a bit so it could go into my hair without looking greasy, and used it twice daily for probably two months before I got lazy. I don't recall exceptional hair growth, but my scalp has just plain old dry skin flakes now, no scaly stuff. Being able to go to 2-3 washes per week, which I couldn't have done before, has made my hair as nice as I could hope for when wearing a hard hat 8 hours a day.

I have some first-hand knowledge here. I met Josh at a signing for the girls' book while he worked there. My office is near the FRC's office, so we talked a little about the restaurants in the neighborhood. He gave me the impression that he found them too expensive. Remember the episode where he forgot his brown bag lunch and Anna drove it into the city? (Which might make sense in Arkansas, but is insane here.) I don't think he was going to those restaurants if he could avoid it.

I get the sense the duggars pick and choose where to be frugal. He did sign up for an Ashley Madison subscription so it's not like he was super serious about every penny. I mean even a frugal philanderer should be able to utilize free porn and Craigslist without a subscription service?

I'm not even sure if I'm joking any more with the duggars there logic  and hypocracy makes no sense to me. Making wife drive into the city to give you a brown bagged lunch instead of buying lunch because you are cheap. But please bill my credit card monthly for my affair services!

Anna driving in with lunch was simply staged to create part of an episode.   What are the odds Josh just happened to forget his lunch on the day the cameras are scheduled to be there and that was a better plot point than whatever they had previously planned?

That's all very true , but over the years  I'm positive JimBob has put aside a substantial amount of money for rainy days. I remember the very first special Michelle saying that they worked really hard before to sort of relax now and this was when she had 14 or 15 or 16 kids, plus living debt free. Not saying it will be enough to support all the kids forever and a day but I still don't buy that they are in need of much or the whole shoe string budget nonsense. That's why the in laws don't work on the traditional sense. They don't have too. At least not right now.

Think it through- JB and M both worked for 4 years before they had kids. JB's employment history is rather scattered once the kids started arriving. There was real estate, used cars, towing, and a short stint at the state legislature, but nothing sustained, and even Jill mentioned that both her parents were at home when she was growing up. Unless someone left JB a huge pile of money, or he is doing something illegal, there is no way a man with 19 children has amassed a sizable portfolio, enough to support 10s of people and counting into the distance future, all without working for decades on end.  There is just no way.

Jill also said that she used to hide in the bathroom to keep her plate to herself. A man with 19 kids can't support himself on any half assed job like JB did.

Really????? That is so sad! Why do you have that many children if you can't even feed them - and it's not like there was decent food in Duggarland - just junk covered with more junk

I think it was in one of the talking heads and Derek said it. Jill just smiled and sat there. She told him the story of hiding in the bathroom.

I came from a family of only 5 out of which there were never more than 4 living at home at the time. We were middle class and had plenty of food and treats too and still all of us would occasionally hide either the food itself or ourselves and the food to eat something we liked. I would even eat things my siblings liked just to spite them. If I had 18 siblings I assume this would happen more or less daily.

You're right. It was in the episode where Jill and Jana were making Nepali food for Derick. I felt so bad for Jill hearing that.

I mean, after the shower rack thing, Jill could be exaggerating or that was something she did only once. But I don't think Boob legally has a huge savings either

I say legally because I'm still shocked he has not gone to jail or even been investigated for tax evasion yet.
