Summary of Spring Days with the Moodys

In one of their (several) burrito-making posts, there were comments inquiring about cooking overnight and whether it's necessary. Steve was very insistent that the burritos tasted better when the mixture cooked overnight. So perhaps there's an actual reason....

Steve also insists that there is no difference when they add meat vs. not having meat, which is hard to believe.

His assertion might actually be true. If they treat beef like they treat the onion and jalapeno mixture (pureed and cooked to infinity), it doesn't resemble anything that has texture. The Maxwells might even know the secret to making soup from ground beef alone.

Love that episode. We have honorary Greek parents/grandparents. Nonna taught me to cook all her favourite Greek recipes and they all use "the Greek spice". Nonna didn't know it's English name and I couldn't read the Greek on the packet. (She use to buy it in 5kg bags as well as grow it fresh. It is used in literally every recipe!) It was years before I worked out it was Oregano.

Back to Stevie, the beans are puréed to mush and the flavour comes from the chilli not the beans so how would cooking overnight have any effect. Texture = no. Flavour = no. There is nothing left, is there?

*I am willing to be educated if it does make some difference. I have never eaten refried beans so I don't know.

This story made me smile. Thank you for sharing.

Remember that Steve also says that there is no difference in the taste of the burritos if meat is added, so it is therefore unnecessary.

Now I love me some bean burritos, and have no issues making or eating them. But there isn't enough Mexican Herb I could smoke that would be able to convince me that bean as opposed to bean and beef burritos have the same flavor profile. Steve actually believes that bs when he's sober.

I'm a vegetarian... So I WOULD taste the difference!

My family is not vegetarian, and I'm not even sure it ever crossed their minds to put ground beef in the burritos...

I should get some veggie ground beef and try it sometime.

This thread just gave me a huge craving for a good burrito. There's a local mom-and-pop place that makes them near where I live. Paid a little too much, but I got one yesterday that had steak, cheese, beans, rice, and onions. And boy, was it GOOD. No tasteless Maxwell bean-burrito mash there, no sirree.

For Mother's Day tomorrow, the extended family and I are going to a Tex-Mex place where they serve real burritos that have actual flavor and texture. And margaritas. I'll mentally raise my glass to them in hopes they someday learn what they've been missing.

Dammit, now I want one. Actually, I'm kind of surprised this thread hasn't already descended into food-porn pics of good burritos.

I wonder what would the Maxwells would do if someone swapped their boring burritos with a properly made one. They might get a craving for good food and want to try new recipes :o

He wants it to be flavourless and boring.

Just like Stevehovah himself.

IKR? How did he manage that? Whether you eat them out or make them yourself, burritos are...you know...F*N. :shifty: All those colorful fillings like pink pickled red onions or nearly neon green avocados, the warm tortillas, the CHOICES and individuality in creating one just for you. He even managed to make burritos dull, FFS.
