It's a cotton harvester, not a combine harvester, but the feeling is real.

The funny thing was that Facebook added the disclaimer, cutting off where it said "there is a new strain out there."

For our Aussies following the Sydney situation.

The second one comes from the way cases are counted and announced - it's not uncommon to have e.g. 24 new cases but we know about 11 announced yesterday but they are in today's reporting period so it's really only 13 new cases. The Shovel (satirical site) summed it up well:

The first one is just linguistic differences between NSW and Victoria... with a pointed barb at NSW politicians who called it everything except a lockdown until yesterday.

Yes sorry, should probably have explained the joke for the non-Aussies!

Context for these: Victoria went through the longest period of lockdown of any other state, got back to 0 cases after peaks of several hundred each day, and has done a couple of short sharp lockdowns since, to stop the spread when there have been cases from hotel quarantine breaches. There was a lot of finger pointing at Melbourne and claims that the Victorian Premier was a “dictator” for ordering lockdowns. It worked though, and since then other states have also responded with early (& therefore shorter) lockdowns whenever they’ve had a handful of cases. Meanwhile the NSW Premier, who is from the more conservative political party, has been particularly critical of border closures and lockdowns, and claimed that her “gold standard” contact tracing team was enough. But now it’s become clear the Delta strain is loose in Sydney and contact tracing can’t keep up with the spread. So yesterday (too late IMO) the premier had to eat some humble pie and send Sydney into lockdown.

Then today, reports of (single digit) locally-acquired cases in a bunch of other states also popped up, with Victoria/Melbourne one of the few reporting 0 new cases. The image is from Australia’s first winter olympic gold medal for speed skating, won when a crash of several faster skaters right before the finish line let Stephen Bradbury pass them.

More lockdowns for Australia *sigh*. We had a good run. Gladys is the Premier of NSW, who kept avoiding locking down and insisting contact tracing could deal with it, unlike other states who used an abundance of caution.

Our current lockdown restrictions say we’re allowed outside in groups of up to 10 to exercise (but not allowed friends over to houses, restaurants and cafes are takeaway only). Predictably, people are pushing the boundaries.

They sure are pushing it. Lockdown has been extended … and it’s very clear why.

Explanation for non-Aussies: this Insta link is to Matty J. He was on The Bachelorette and came second, everyone’s heart broke when the other guy was chosen over him. A while later he was chosen to be The Bachelor and he fell head over heels for a super funny lady. Turns out they are comedy gold as a couple and they both make hilarious posts on Instagram. They now have 2 little girls and their older daughter is a hoot too. Anyway, he posted this today:

Have you been watching Jimmy Rees’ “meanwhile in Australia” videos? Part 22 was brilliant.

IKEA added to the list of exposure sites, with 2000 people who went there on one day (wtf guys? You’re meant to be locked down!) considered close contacts.

The woman is the Premier of NSW, who bangs on about keeping the economy going and is responsible for trying to contain Sydney’s current outbreak without hard rules. The man is the Premier of VIC who instituted a lockdown this time last year that brought their covid cases back down to 0.

I can't believe they're open - nothing was here but for click and collect. I was annoyed because Spotlight (materials, craft stuff, curtain stuff) charged a ridiculous amount for home delivery, and they were outside my 5km so I couldn't click and collect either (and even for that the fee was ridiculous so my child had ripped curtains until they re-opened.)

Oh yes. Deer Patrol is my favourite so far. Seriously, what is going on up there? Also:

And there's that nice big space below "carnivorous" just begging for someone to pencil in a nice random noun to make a scary, but at least grammatically correct sentence...
