I think the world-brains in our pockets have a lot to do with that. Everyone thinks they're an expert now because they can Google something, and everyone can find justification for and validation of their beliefs, no matter how crazy they might be, because they can talk to everyone in the world instead of just their friends and neighbors. In 1955 if I said the sky was green with purple polka dots, the people I saw and spoke to on a regular basis would tell me I'm crazy, and eventually I'd probably give up trying to convince people, and either I'd change my mind or I'd at least be the only one believing it. But now I could post it on the internet and finds hundreds of people around the world willing to photoshop images to prove me right and that group could start influencing others.

Let's not forget this is the dude who at age 30 became guardian of a 17-year-old so he could cross state lines and have sex with her without legal trouble, wrote a song called "Jailbait" about wanting to sleep with a 13-year-old, and who Courtney Love claims she gave a blowjob to when she was 12. 

None of that is Covid related, of course, but worth remembering whenever his name comes up.
