Insensitive Robin Williams Comments

I actually kinda agree with Todd bridges statement, even know I think he's being hypocritical since he did abuse drugs. Suicide is selfish. I will admit my heart sunk a little when I heard the news but after reading statements from his daughter, I just couldn't feel sorry for the act he did. Just like any other person who commits a selfish act.

Now fjers call me out.

I don't think most people are calling you out to be confrontational. As a suicide attempt survivor myself, I feel like it's important to share my perspective, how I was in such a bad place that ending it seemed like the only way out of the agonizing misery. Did I think of my family and how it would affect them at the time? Honestly, not really, which makes me selfish in the sense that you and several others noted, but looking back and realizing how badly off I was and how my mind was just not functioning properly, I have a hard time hearing that people would consider my actions to be selfish if they never experienced crippling depression themselves. After the attempt, when I was doing much better, I did feel extremely guilty for what I put my family through, and perhaps this would have been the case for Robin Williams and so many others. But since they can't speak for themselves, I think a lot of us who've been there feel the need to try to explain their perspectives.

When I hear about suicides, given my personal history, I immediately feel for the victims since I strongly identify with them. And I know that if I heard such a thing when I was at my worst, being called selfish would make me feel even worse, which would probably give me more of a reason to harm myself. But, without that perspective, I might agree that suicide is selfish. A friend of mine was suffering from post-partum depression (which I somehow think is socially more “acceptableâ€) and took her own life. Her family knew she was having some issues and to be honest, I was upset with her husband for not doing more to help her.

It’s a very difficult and emotionally charged issued.

edited because copy/pasting is hard, LOL

Well, to go along with the hateful fundie posts from those who didn't get the memo that RW was Episcopalian and that you can suffer from depression even if you are Christian, we have the flip side: a curious assortment of Jewish papers running glowing obituaries, because they considered him an "honorary Jew" even if he was an Episcopalian.

Just watched the youtube video. Didn't like this guy before, and thought he was an idiot. Now, I loathe him entirely! I don't say that about many people. That video made me feel nauseous. How can one person be so full hate? :angry-cussing:

Those were lovely, and I probably wouldn't have seen them, were it not for your links. Thank you for sharing them.
