A lady I know through a friend had a baby this week and named her Hadessah Janna- Mahri

She is a fudie. They homeschool (so the teacher will not have problems with the name) that poor child will never live down that long name. Oh and the last name i am not giving away but it is sad to think THAT there is still a long last name to add :(

Hadassah isn't so bad; I know a few. With the middle names though that's really a mouthful.

Hadassah (and variants of it) are not uncommon names to me, I know a few at least. It's up there with Sarah, Rachel, David and Zach for common Jewish names. The rest, oy.

Posted

Yeah I actually like Hadassah a lot. It's a common-ish Jewish name (more among the orthodox crowd).

Posted

Yes the Hadassaah isn't bad as long as it's not misspelled. I wonder if the "Mahri" is supposed to be pronounced "Ma-REE" (like Maria) or "MAH-ree"

Hmmmm. Never heard the name before, let alone know someone with the name, yet I've met numerous Sarahs, Rachels, Davids and Zachs...

Yeah, I disagree that it's as common as Sarah or Rachel. It's unique, but not nuts.

No the baby is not Hadassah but Hedessah

Yeah, I disagree that it's as common as Sarah or Rachel. It's unique, but not nuts.

Might be my area/background then, my family is mostly either conservative or orthodox/hasidim. It's the third most popular from camp from what I remember and I have two cousins with that name. It's honestly not my favorite, I'm a Leah fan, and yet can't think of anyone with that name.

I'm sure our Jewish FJ'ites will correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Hadassah the Hebrew name of Esther?

Hadassah is also the name of the Women's Zionist Organization of America. It's a pretty remarkable organization founded by an extraordinary woman, Henrietta Szold.

Little Hadassah in this video by The Maccabeats is just adorable.

I don't like any of those names, but none of them are toooo awful on their own. That mix, though, with all those 'a's? It just doesn't look or sound nice.

Hadassah is a gorgeous name. But the way they spelled that is making me itch.

Posted

Ugh. That name is horrible. Any one of those names on their own would be perfectly fine, but not all together plus a long surname. That's ridiculous.

If you're going to use a name that's already uncommon, don't change the freaking spelling.

Haha. I have a fundie-raised friend with a first name that makes people assume she's Jewish. I don't think that's what your friend meant to do, but watch that little girl make instafriends in parts of Chicago or New York and then have to tell them "actually my parents are Christians, just crazy ones."

I hate these winds. They are absolutely HOWLING here in SoCal. Not sure I'll be able to sleep tonight because I'm so afraid we'll get sudden evacuation orders the way we did with the Woolsey fire in 2018. There's no way of knowing when and where a fire might crop up and once it does, there's no containing it in these winds. I'm praying for the safety of our brave firefighters. My heart is with everyone in the Pacific Palisades and in Eaton Canyon near Pasadena.

The world doesn't need more people. If people want to have children, that's fine, but there is no reason we have to keep having more people.

      Winter snack: crispy chickpeas
Preheat oven to 400 F. Drain and rinse a can of chickpeas, then toss in olive oil and whatever spices you like. I use fried chili crisp. Cook for 15 minutes, stir, another 15 minutes, stir, repeat until they're crispy and delicious. Good as a snack, on salads, etc.
I am sharing my super secret chili crisp source just because I love you guys:

Serious question: is there anything men hate more than a woman's strongly held opinion?

Happy New Year, all you amazing people! I just saw a (possibly joking) tradition online called Yule Boasting.

      My quick text version:
i will begin 2025 by distilling a barrel full of tequila from the agave plants in my yard, assisted by george clooney, who admires me greatly and will be sad and heartbroken when my plan moves ahead without further human assistance.
sky-clad, i will find my familiar, a malevolently clever curve-billed thrasher named Willie Wildman. together we will roam my neighborhood, putting together an animal army consisting of a coyote pack, a squadron of javelinas, and my local great horned owl pair, perseverance and ingenuity.
we will all consume mass quantities of tequila, paint our faces blue, and set out on yucca broomsticks to reach our nation's capitol.
we will swoop down on DC, screaming and howling, occupying first the capitol and then the white house, where we will become co-presidents and replace congress with the yacht-sinking orcas of the mediterranean. AND EVERYONE WILL FUCKING REJOICE.

It's crazy to think that it has already been 25 years since we were worried about what would happen when the calendars would switch over to Y2K.
