I still appreciate the Skymall, but it hasn't been the same since they removed the Hot Diggity Dogger, a Skymall Staple for years.

What was that?

Simply the most necessary, useful kitchen appliance EVER.

THAT is AWESOME. I'm not kidding, y'all. My kids love hotdogs and so do I. Where has Skymall been all my life?

Oh I LOVE Skymall. I have the pleasure of flying on a semi-frequent basis and it never gets old.

Any fans of Fingerhut/Carol Wright? They are the more "landbased" cousins of Skymall. I think they tend to aim at a slightly older crowd too.

(not breaking, I'm sure they would love the traffic)

It appears Fingerhut has gone a bit more mainstream...far fewer arthritis slippers and copper golf bracelets than what there used to be. However, Carol Wright is getting her groove on...a large selection of sexual enhancers!

I remember my neighbor having some kind of gift catalogue that, no joke, had post-it-note tabs for your bible on one page and a nude workout DVD on the next.

I wonder if having one of those would allow me me bring my wine to the pool. We have a NO GLASS policy in my complex.

That is why I have it to drink wine in my pool

OMG we used to get the fingerhut catalogs in the mail when I was a kid. Awesome stuff. There was another one too, cant remember it, think it started with an H or something.

Another must have from skymall, the dog crate that serves as an end table!!

Aww fingerhut brings back memories of my grandma :) She loved her catalogs and I remember having tons of fingerhut stuff around when I was a kid. I didn't know they still existed.

Has anyone seen What's up? I think that's the catalog name. Full of weird stuff for everyone especially Tshirt lovers

Warning, this will be stuck in your head forever (which is only fair, since it earworms me immediately every time I see the title of this thread):

songs.jonathancoulton.com/free/mp3/SkyMall.mp3

O'Hare is nice this time of year

I check my bags and find my seat and buy a beer and settle in

Such is my life here on the road

Now my seat back is up, tray table stowed and there's nothing to do

I gotta get myself through

So I am shopping in SkyMall

That five-mile-high mall

That always has just what I need

When I get to the gate and remember too late

I should have brought something to read

I'm OK, cause I know that I'm gonna shop SkyMall

I bought a pair of bonsai trees

I bought a big fake rock where I can hide my keys from everyone

And I imagine what all my friends would say

To see this lovable Santa dance and sway to my favorite songs

My favorite holiday songs

And I am shopping in SkyMall

That five-mile-high mall

That always has just what I need

When I get to the gate and remember too late

I should have brought something to read

I'm OK, cause I know that I'm gonna shop SkyMall

In Cleveland, I bought a replica of the sword that was broken

And then somewhere above Detroit some Successories that say "Lead with Vision"

I love you best when I'm away

And while I'm out here I look forward to the day when I come home

Cause there's something special waiting there

It's a whimsical statue of a bear that holds a bottle of wine

But please don't touch it, it's mine

Because I bought it in SkyMall

That five-mile-high mall

That always has just what I need

When I get to the gate and remember too late

I should have brought something to read

It's OK, cause I know that I'm gonna shop SkyMall

Love JoCo! Especially his cover of Baby Got Back.

My dad got Wireless catalog in the late 80s/early 90s. It was like Skymall for the NPR crowd. It sold t-shirts that said things like "Eschew Obfuscation" and "Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditiones habes."

They're still around, but seem to have gone more in the pop culture/ThinkGeek direction these days.

Two things to add to this thread:

1. This is the thread that made me realize that I needed to register on FJ and stop lurking.

2. I NEED that hot dog toaster. Like, I NEED it now. It's 10 kinds of awesome.

You have no idea how much of their stuff you'll discover you need ASAP. I was compelled to buy a Roomba after seeing it in the Skymall catalogue; it was as though my life was incomplete without one.

How do you like the Roomba?

I have 3 dogs and was given a Roomba - the special pet fur version - and think it is useless! Worst gift ever (but don't tell Mr P.) I have to stop it and empty the tiny little container at least 2 or 3X a room unless I sweep or vacuum first. It does get fluff under the couch and human beds without me moving them, but it talks back and scares me. It's also really noisy and terrifies the dogs. Sigh.

I am seriously tempted by the sholdit scarf instead of having to carry a bag though. skymall.com/sholdit-scarf/WA113.html

I wonder whether it works and is worth $50. Anyone own one?

I want a Roomba...but they are crazy expensive, and I wasn't sure if they worked decently or not. So you say not?

Darn, though! Part vacuum for lazy people, and part something to annoy the cats with. It sounds good on paper!

I expect your cats will love you forever if you get a Roomba! You will just have to teach them to empty it and they will start it themselves to go for a drive.

I don't like it because of the noise, the time it takes, and the tiny dirt container thingie. If they tripled the size of the dirt container I'd probably like it a lot more. It can't keep up with the fur shed daily by 3 short haired large dogs and I can't run it with them anywhere in the vicinity. One of them stands and barks at it, one of them runs and hides, and one of them peed on the floor submissively as soon as it started talking!

I'll admit that it does clean very thoroughly after I've swept up the worst of the fuzz, but that rather defeats the good vacuum cleaner for lazy people part! I now have mine programmed to clean the living and dining room floors (about 400 sq ft) at night a few times a week - because the dogs rarely hang out in those rooms - and it does well there when I empty it after every cleaning. I also use it to clean bedrooms and under human beds every week, but that is after I've swept and when I'm there to supervise and empty it.

Other disadvantages: It needs about 3.5" clearance to get under furniture, and is not that great on thick rugs (I mostly have hardwood and thin rugs) or in corners. It can also can get stuck and run out of power. If it hasn't parked itself to recharge you have to play find the Roomba!

I can see it working well in a apartment or smaller single story house with one or two small short haired pets who want to ride it. Mr P bought ours on sale at Costco. I still don't think it was worth the $$!

Beware of kittens and Roomba. If they learn to ride it young, they'll always think it's theirs and you'll have cats demanding their Roomba toy time. Some of them do learn to turn it on - in the middle of the night under your bed.

This sounds like personal experience talking ;)

I can't imagine the years of life I would loose if I was sound asleep and something motorized started talking under my bed. There would be a dead roomba and a sad little cat in my house after the first time that happened

When you say it starts talking, what exactly do you mean? I can't imagine what a vacuum would have to converse about, really.

I just saw the hot dog toaster in the Regal catalogue.

Speaking of superfluous devices, have you seen The Breakfast Sandwich Maker? http://www.walmart.com/ip/23708545?wmls ... SellerId=3 (Walmart, link not broken). My 9 year old is obsessed and wants one for Christmas. "See Mom, now you don't have to make me breakfast if I can get this!"
