From the we need less government but really want more republicans we get this stupid law from a woman.

North Carolina state representatives have introduced a bill that would "clarify" state law to specifically prohibit the baring of women's breasts. Women worried about showing too much of their "private area" should use pasties, or perhaps duct tape.

The proposed legislation, House Bill 34, would make it a Class H felony to expose "external organs of sex and of excretion, including the nipple, or any portion of the areola, of the human female breast."

I take huge exception to the over sexualization of breasts in America. Just because they can be sexy doesn't mean they are sexual organs. Mouths, cleavage, hell even feet all have sex appeal to some people. Let's just save some time and start passing the burqas out now. Obviously women's bodies are shameful and dirty.

As western European, where topless bathing is common and naked girls are on daily newspapers, I can just laugh about this :D

Laugh because it's far away... I feel sorry for you, this seems lunatic!

I agree. The human body can be sexual but nudity doesn't have to be about sex.

Once I was in the food court in the mall. My son was tucked under a light blanket with his feet sticking out. An older woman approached me and told me that my son would get overheated. I assured her that he was fine and that I was nursing him. She looked shocked and told me that I should do that in the bathroom. I've had other woman tell me similar things. If you are going to breastfeed, they argue, it should be away from everyone else. It doesn't have anything to do with seeing boobs. My breasts are quite small and are covered by a blanket or even the baby's head.

Why don't people grow up? If you see a boob or a nipple, so what? How is that different than seeing someone's ear lobe or finger tip?

So what about breastfeeding?

Only in a locked bathroom stall with a blanket over my baby's head?

Edit - Debrand, you should have told that woman to go eat HER lunch in the bathroom...

I also wonder if it would apply to breastfeeding in public. Well, women are supposed to be perpetually pregnant or have young babies. So if they can't nurse in public for fear of becoming criminals if the baby unlatches unexpectedly then women will be less inclined to leave the house. So maybe it's killing two birds with one stone.

I have always asserted that if men can go topless, then women can too. A find young, muscled man with his shirt off is just as yummy as an attractive beautiful young woman.

Although - I've often thought that the "men are visual" and "women are not visual" is supported by women so they can get their eye candy without anyone being none the wiser (although it probably is leftovers from the cult of domesticity era).

ETA: Seriously - how gross would it be to nurse in a public bathroom? What's wrong with these people? This is ridiculous.

So basically they want to criminalize public breastfeeding. Amen, amen I say to you! It's about time someone stood up to the menace that are b-feeding moms and their exposed nips. Way to go, North Carolina!

See, Jingerites, *this* is how pro-life, family values pols git 'er done!

Are there no nudist beaches in the US?

I'm been told there are some in Hawaii. But I know an awful lot of people who don't realize that Hawaii is part of the United States...

Well, Obama was born there so it's obviously not part of America!

This is ridiculous. A breast is one of the first things many kids see, for heaven's sake! What are moms supposed to do, put blinders over their bosom?

(I support female toplessness in general, and think the whole breast fixation is ridiculous, but breastfeeding arguments seem to get the most traction, I guess because they're practical.) Here in Ontario you can legally go topless :naughty: , although people don't in practice, mostly because of the weather.

And I'm sure there are plenty of "unofficial" nudist beaches in the US, especially near big cities.

I was thinking the same but there is a clause for breastfeeding.

the way to make breasts less of a sexual object is to uncover them. the more they are hidden the more sexual they bocome. this is somple provable logic so of course a republican and never grasp it.

Black's Beach, La Jolla, CA, northern portion allows nudity. I'm sure there have to be others. They aren't advertised though.

It's obvious the state of North Carolina has no need for politicians to enact real laws. This is dumb. People once again conflate nudity with sex (and porn).

I still remember when I studying for my OB shelf exam, I had my book open to pictures of the female body parts in a coffeeshop. I briefly wondered if anyone would ask me to close it or leave due to it's unseemly contents. Then I decided if someone was getting off of those pictures, they had other issues. :)

Little kids shouldn't have to feed in a bathroom. Med students shouldn't have to study in a cell.

On the bright side, it can be good for curing your own body hang-ups. After one summer by a German lakeside, I'm not bothered about my body any more. It was... anatomically educational. :D

edited to add: I was a teenager with loads of hang-ups, and it was actually quite good for me to see so many different body-shapes and sizes, old and young, mostly naked. It made me realize that no one's perfect, we all age, and that there is no standard. And it taught me a lot about anatomy.

The same thing happened to me, Debrand, but only it was my mother-in-law at the time who suggested I go to the bathroom to feed my three-month-old daughter. We were out having dinner at a chinese restaurant, and were in a fairly secluded booth, and I started feeding my daughter (very modestly, with the blanket covering both of us), and she was just repulsed.

I was very ashamed at her making it out to be such a dirty thing in front of our other dinner mates (since it was literally my first time trying to nurse in a public place), and she made such a big deal about it that I did go feed her in the restroom. :( :( Luckily, it had one of those separate "lounge" type areas with a comfy chair so I didn't have to just stand around in the bathroom. I really wish I had had the balls to just tell her off and go about my business, but I wasn't quite there yet.

I'm so over this country's Puritanical views on the human female body.

Sarah, this is so true. Aside from middle-school showering after PE I was never in the presence of a roomful of nude women until my early 30s, when I entered the changing room for the swimming pool, and there it all was. :D (My previous experiences with such changing rooms was that people went into individual stalls to change--it wasn't out in the open, but then again I'm from AZ, so maybe that had something to do with it).

It occurred to me at that moment (with my three-year-old daughter in tow) that I had never really seen -real- women's bodies--only those approved by the cultural gatekeepers in movies, advertising, etc. I think it's very beneficial for people to see a range of human bodies so we can get rid of some of our hang ups. Even those that might not be conventionally reveal-worthy. :)

ETA: Arizona anecdote.

Because breasts are such a dangerous weapon afterall, we need more laws. Afterall, wommin should only show their breasts for their headships and feed their youngun's at home not in public!

Jesus Christ....out of all of the crimes in the world, you SERIOUSLY want to criminalize breast slips?!!! Stay klassy Carolinans.
