!

Sonia Sotomayor went on Sesame street to tell children (especially little girls) that they should plan to have a career and being a princess isn't very realistic.

Anyone want to play fundie antifeminist bingo on how pissed off Lousewife, Gen Cedar, Kidist will be about this clearly pro SCOTUS anti princess agenda will be?

Thats awesome! I really love the message it sends! Yay to Sesame Street!

Oh, and for sure I'm predicting that some of the fundies are going to have some eye-roll inducing things to say...

Replace black judges' robes with something hot pink and a little more form-fitting and most little girls would jump at being a judge.

Really, being a judge is not unlike being a princess. You make a fairly good living by bossing people around.

Not sure how pro princess fundies are, but the're definitely not going to like someone telling their daughters they can be judges. They're teaching their daughters they can be stay at home homeschooling mothers of many children and nothing else. They don't want their daughters getting ideas of what's really possible for women.

I love that this is on sesame street though! When I was little I wanted to rescue the princesses and then marry them and live happily ever after, which is super funny to me now. If I was a princess I'd rather be like Merida from Brave, so even modern princesses aren't acceptable to fundies.

When a little girl says, "I want to be a princess when I grow up", I automatically think, "Not a career choice". It's probably a good thing I never had daughters.

Not that fundies are gonna let their children watch ebil socialist Big Bird, anyway.

One of my daughters used to say she was Queen back when she was three or four. Part of that may be due to their part English heritage (as in gramdmother was born in England) and part of due to the fact that my girls had flower girl dresses like Diana's flower girls in the Royal Wedding. My girls wore those dresses out playing in them.

Pomology, have you seen the ads for PBS featuring Big Bird quite prominently. Don't know if the ads are new or not, but they're great!

My youngest daughter wanted to be a princess but her version of royalty was to kick butt and rescue the prince. When I was young I imagined that I was a thief, sneaking around in shadows and jumping out at the unwary. The idea of being a delicate princess didn't appeal to me and I didn't realize, like my daughter, that I could remake the entire princess image in my mind

My Prediction:

I'm calling that at least one blogger will note that poor, pathetic women who have short hair and are not Maxwell-thin will have no choice but to be marked with God's disfavor and work for a living. The "no godly man would have them" card.

Also, Kidist will make a racist remark

That is awesome!

My hubs got me a shirt that says, "Self-Rescuing Princess." Your daughter might need one, too.

Kids will always have unrealistic goals in life though-so far, the ambition choices of some kids I know have been: princess, dinosaur, God, Supreme Overlord of the Universe, tooth fairy and a donut.

I totally agree with this though, its good that someones encouraging little girls to want to be something when they grow up, I think I would have done better in life if my mom had encouraged me to have a career instead of telling me that women cant get jobs, they become moms and stay at home looking after kids.

I know you're right about the fundie response to this, but that only demonstrates that fundies don't know their Bible! Even the KJV contains the story of Deborah, a kick-ass judge who prophesied military victory for God! (And she had a friend named Barak! :o )

I wanted to be Sara Crewe. Sara is a princess (because every girl is a princess!) but her idea of being a princess was to be the best person you can be and be nice to others even if you are going through hard times like having to live in an attic and work as a servant. She also believed that you can use your imagination as a way to help you through bad times, because nobody can take your imagination (or smarts or feelings etc.) away from you. Sara's princess thing was like my second religion. I never wanted to be a princess in the typical Disney sense. My favorite part of that story was when Sara was a servant.. strangely enough I did not like chores so it didn't really compute ;) Oh and I wanted to be an opthamalogist. I was reminded of that while taking anatomy because I discovered I think eyes are really, really gross, like jumping-off-my-stool-in-terror gross. lol

I have a fundy friend on FB who is obsessed with Tangled. That one really confuses me. Hasn't she read the Botkins' article about how evil it is?

Sassycupcake, how dare you mention that there is a Barak in the Bible. Surely that is just an evil rumor :naughty:

I went through a period of time when I little when I wanted to Sheena, Queen of the Jungle. That was somewhere in between my wanting to be a mermaid or Dale Evans. When I got a bit older , I thought it would be cool to be a dryad. Most of my career dreams were along the lines of civil engineer, geologist, or oceanographer.

He He He

This is only the beginning of Big Bird's revenge.....

 I know right? I look forward to the new, more progressive Sesame Street.

My children have wanted to be all kinds of things, including an island. Island is as reasonable a career choice as princess.

I know this is controversial, but I have been clear with my daughters that "mommy" is not a viable career choice. Your children are young for such a short time; it is important to have an education and some sort of job title to go back to when they go to school and/or grow up. It's not hard to impress upon them because they have grown up, as I did, with the idea that mommies have shit to do besides cleaning and wiping bottoms. There is plenty of that in my life, but it is not "what I do". It's what I do when I am not doing what I do, if that makes sense.

No no, my husband says exactly the same thing. There's a moratorium on disney princesses in Chez-Tchotchke. Any "hand me downs" that we get that have princesses on them, he immediately squirrels out of the house and to good will. He was telling ME to read "Cinderella ate my daughter" - and I'm all "honey, you're preaching to the damn choir!"

Lousewife will imply she's a lesbian who hates children.

I suspect fundies aren't really that pro princess but are against any sort of encouragement that girls have a career.

IMO every kid should be encouraged should have a long term plan for their future that goes beyond living off someone else. My grandfather died suddenly of a heart attack grandmother was widowed in her early 50's and she had three teenagers to provide for. Claiming you can live off a church's charity is a very foolish notion.

Ive been thinking a lot about this a lot lately, in regards to kids wanting to be a mommy when asked what they want to do when they grow up. I think even from a young age, kids should know that as well as being a mom, they can also be something else. While being a stay at home mom is a valid choice, I dont do SAHD's, I am not having an adult child who lives at home and does nothing, and it could be years before my hypothetical future daughter meets someone and has a child, and I would hope that she does something with that time like go to college or get a job. Theres also that it might not always be possible to stay at home-what would happen if her husband didnt earn enough to support the family? Or if he died or became ill or disabled and couldnt work and they were running out of money? Its always best to have another option.

I agree with this. "Mommy" is a lifestyle choice, not a career choice.

I used to say that I wanted to be a mermaid so I could swim all day.

My kid was convinced that his preschool was actually the Jedi Academy. He got a shock on the first day of school

I have been a stay-at-home mom for a long time. I would never want my daughters to do the same. It makes a woman too vulnerable if something bad should happen to her husband or her marriage.

I would support my girls being SAHMS but would really want them to finish college and have a career to fall back on in case it didnt work out, and to be completely involved in all finances, insurance policies, etc.

Im divorced and now going back to school, and its definitely not ideal.
