"We need to get the Egypt out of our lives"

EGYPT?! What the hell does Egypt have to do with anything?

Where did you find this?

I would have been all like, "stupid litterbugs," and then picked up the CDs and thrown them in the trash can.

If I may explain about Egypt....

It's a common phrase in fundie and fundie light preaching (also pentecostal/charismatic). Referring to God getting the Israelites out of Egypt, but them "keeping Egypt in their hearts"--when they got uncomfortable in the wilderness, complaining and talking about all the good food they would be eating in Egypt.

So, that's where that comes from.

Well, these folks lie for Jesus, whip babies for Jesus, etc. -- I guess "littering for Jesus" belongs on that list. :(

It would make an awesome fundy blog title though.

Honestly he should have sold them to a used record shop and then used that money to buy godly music or a burrito.

Sad thing is that I knew a family that did that (minus the blog). They felt that various objects in their home had demonic connections and threw them out. One son even had to throw out games that he liked (including Myst 3 if I remember correctly).

Because yes, despite not even being mentioned in the Bible, objects can be possessed by demons who have nothing better to do, and owning such objects invites evil into your home. Also, all digital copies of something are haunted by the same demons, especially if they are Harry Potter movies.

Oh, goodness. Youth group memories! We had one "lesson" which was all about how we should throw away our Harry Potter books, movies, video games, posters, etc. It was the same idea as "Throwing out Egypt" even those that phrase wasn't used. We all just stared at the preacher in confusion, because we weren't stupid enough to think Harry Potter would turn us into witches or wizards.

Did they put tape over the names of certain kitchen appliances?

Makes sense. Caring about the environment is for hippie socialists, and we all know Jesus wasn't one of those.

The SOTDRT idiots would probably think CDs make good fertilizer, anyway.

To be honest, I don't know, but I don't think so. I think the idea was that objects because of their history or content (if a book, movie, or game) could be possessed by demons. I don't think it was the name itself that mattered so much. But I could be wrong. This family was charismatic- all into faith healings and such- not really like the literalist King James Bible only types (who sometimes have problems with C.S. Lewis's The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe because of the word "witch" in the title, despite any messianic images in the story).

I really want to write a sci-fi book about that concept someday. Maybe not Christian demons, but just the idea that objects can become "infected."

That would be cool. Somehow fundies and science fiction go too well together. E.g. the episode "Our Mrs. Reynolds" from the Firefly series.

Time to burn that King Tut coffee table book, release your soul from all hennas and probably falafel too.

At my fundie independent-pentecostal church in the 70s, we had record-burnings! :angry-fire: Burn that sinful rock music!! Who cares about releasing toxic fumes into the environment?

And that included most Christian pop music; you had to purchase Christian pop from the approved list only. A friend of mine regretted burning one of her Christian pop albums. I later became friends with a member of this particular band and he thought it was hilarious that he had been burned in effigy as an agent of the devil. He donated a new record to my friend at church, autographed with the directions "Do not burn, spindle or mutilate."

I know, sometimes they really do. The sci-fi and fantasy genres will go all-out to give a world history and a political landscape, tend to avoid religion(Christian or not). Makes me sad because there is so much that could be done with it.
