Catholic Fundy on 50 Shades of Grey

I didn't mean to offend anyone's literary choices. There are some really good YA novels. My problem stemmed from the multiple situations of an adult only reading YA novels because they have less objectionable content. Now, I live in the middle of the Jello Belt, so take that with a grain of salt.

I hope this works, I'm kinda a recovering Luddite, but this is similar to my feelings about some people's choices in reading material.

Oh, yeah, definitely ties into the 50 Shades thing. It's like people who announce that Eragon is an AMAZING book because they found it immersive. Because it's the only book they've read in five years, and the one they read five years before that, they found boring. I find MOST of the books I read immersive, but if you don't read except for the huge trends then you think that experience is something entirely new so wow, it must be a good book. See above: "Fifty shades is so SEXY! Compared to my sample size of 0 because I've never read decent erotica."

Be warned, some YA novels have some very graphic sex, violence and profanity in them now. Just because it's marked YA doesn't mean it's tame or safe.

Well, I learned something today. I didn't know there was such a thing as a Catholic Fundie. Do Catholic fundies know that regular fundies think they're idolators and not real Christians?

My oldest daughter just finished 50 Shades. I haven't read it, but it seems harmless enough. It's fiction. Once I learned it was based on Twilight that was enough to keep me away. I couldn't even finish the first chapter of the first book in that series because the writing was so horrendous.

......

It was based on Twilight???

Um... wow. Now I want to read it even less. I feel I should thank you.

IIRC, it started out as a Twilight fanfic. Which explains a lot.

It was originally a Twilight fanfiction. A badly written Twilight fanfiction. You can see that the characters are just as horribly developed as Edward and Bella. It's actually even worse writing than Twilight, I dislike it because it's really bad quality. There's some great erotica out there, but 50 shades of grey is not it. I couldn't get far into before I had to stop reading it was so bad. But hating it just because of the sexual content isn't fair. There are better reasons to hate it.

I've heard from people who are into BDSM that even if the writing were better, the kink is badly done--it's portrayed as righteous and healthy stuff when the female protagonist is supposed to be romantic and rebellious and a terrible burden of sickness when it's time for the male protagonist to be sad and misunderstood. Not my thing at all, but the reviewer seemed to know what they were talking about.

ETA: I have no problem with people filing the serial numbers off of their fanfic and trying to publish. One of my favorite authors did exactly that. The thing is, though, she wrote good fanfic.

I mean, seriously great writing:

"There is light everywhere. Bright, warm, piercing light, and I endeavor to keep it at bay for a few more precious minutes. I want to hide, just a few more minutes. But the glare is too strong, and I finally succumb to wakefulness. A glorious Seattle morning greets me – sunshine pouring through the full-height windows and flooding the room with too-bright light. Why didn’t we close the blinds last night?"

"I do as instructed, and he reaches down and grabs the hem. Slowly, he pulls my dress up over my thighs, my hips, my belly, my breasts, my shoulders, and over my head."

It looks like Brianna might explain later on why she blogged about 50 Shades of Grey.

heldts.blogspot.com/2012/07/7-quick-takes-friday.html

5.) Blogging. Writing. It's been hard since my falling prey to fatigue and morning sickness, but I'm hoping to get back into the routine, and soon. In part because I didn't quite offend as many people as I'd hoped with my commentary on 50 Shades of Grey.

6.) That was me being sarcastic. I don't actually like offending people, and like to steer clear of writing on overly controversial subjects. Like, pornography-dressed-up-as-literature for women. However, I made an exception in this case, which maybe I'll explain later. For now I'll simply say that you can't please everyone all of the time, and this is something that bloggers face on a regular basis. So while I don't like ticking people off, I do enjoy writing on meaningful things, even if it sometimes upsets people.

Some YA books are amazing. When I was bored a few years ago, I picked up one of my little sister's books and read it. It was amazing! Seriously, this book is worth the read. http://www.amazon.com/Kira-Kira-Cynthia ... =kira+kira

Also, The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. The nice thing about good YA books is that my daughter and I can both enjoy them and talk about them.

I actually read a great deal of YA books. some are very well written. I enjoy them because they usually are not overly long. Plus I have a 14 year old niece and I like to get her books for holidays and birthdays. With some YA books being a bit more explicit I want to read what I might get her first so that I know that it's more PG13 than R. Not being the parent I'd rather play the gift giving on the safe side.

On 50 shades of Gray. I have read the series. I read it based on the bad reviews. The sex scenes were kind of meh to me but then again I read all the books over about 2 or 3 days so it did become like oh their having sex again, next page, next page, next page. Plus it was annoying when it was written with something like this "I felt heat tingling all the way down THERE!"

I actually liked the 3rd book in the series better than the first 2. I lived near Seattle so I get a laugh about the geography. Only in a book could you make it to Portland in 2 hours.

I am a minority because I LOVED the trilogy, but I am one of those people who had never read any erotica, so it was new and exciting. Plus, My Man and I have always been interested in BDSM and this pushed us over the edge to actually check it out IRL. :) (Meaning finding people who actually practice BDSM and learning more about it.) I read the entire trilogy 2x. It took me 3 days the first time (I stayed up until 7am reading the last book :)) and 2 weeks the second time :)

stains on your marriage?

I was chatting to our midwifery nightshift manager the other night and she said so many people were reading the book on their breaks that she was worried about stains on the chairs.....

I read equal amounts YA, Chick Lit, and Science Fiction/Fantasy. Honestly the YA is usually far better written than the Adult Chick Lit. Bonus points, the YA Science Fiction I read is of equal quality to the Adult in that genre too. And yep, there's usually more sex and drugs in the YA books than the adult ones. More violence too, since The Hunger Games is probably the first violent book I read intentionally in years.

I've had a few facebook friends link to blogs about "why I'm not watching Magic Mike or reading Shades of Gray." All I can think is, "who asked you?!?" I mean really, does anyone care why they are or aren't reading/watching?? I don't. One of my friends even posted a big thing about it, and the comments she got were hilarious. Lots of, "I'd NEVAH watch/read such a thing!" But the BEST were people claiming someone recommended the book to them and they got it without knowing what it was about and they are so embarassed/upset, etc. Same with the movie...one unsuspecting innocent woman was invited by a friend to go see it, and she went, not knowing what it was about. I call shenanigans! I'm guessing most people check movie descriptions and reviews before going, given the cost. And heck, I heard about 50 Shades by reading a news article! Just own it people. You wanted to read it and you did. You wanted to see it, and ya did!!

Because I'm waiting for the unrated DVD of course! :D

After reading several funny blog recaps I got curious and bought this stupid 50 Shades book. I'm reviewing it two chapters at a time and trying to add a humorous angle to keep from getting too angry at it, but sometimes I don't succeed. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and I certainly would never advise banning anything but people . . . this book sucks so bad, on so many different levels.

Anyway, if you want to check it out, my blog is here:

I dislike 50 Shades of Grey because its badly written Twilight fanfiction and reminds me of the stuff my best friend wrote when we were teenagers (despite not having any idea of a healthy relationship or what sex is like, or any real writing skill).

Both 50 Shades/Twilight and fundies have a warped perspective of what a healthy relationship is and romanticise borderline abusive relationships. I dont see why they all dont love it (other than the defrauding sexy bits).

I prefer my books with strong female characters who kick ass and dont need a man to look after them all the time.

I enjoyed them too. ;) That said, I used to live the lifestyle before I was married and this made me realize how much I miss the lifestyle. I am thinking about hubby and I attending an event so he can see how much fun it can be. :)

This is exactly why I hate it! badly written...

There is much much much better written kink out there....

I don't know how any marriage can be shaken by 50SOG. It's a terrible book with less than thrilling scenes. Fundies should love it since it's about a virgin who has never as much as kissed a guy before falling for a controlling asshole. Take out the premarital sex and marry them off first and it's a fundie wet dream.

I want to know how it ties into Twilight though. I thought Twilight was written by a Mormon and that there is an awful of of sexual morality undercurrent. Was the vampire into BDSM?

Edited for riffles

Well I would agree with you on your rating of the book but not necessarily about the audience who have enjoyed it.

I don't think I found this review via FJ (although I can't remember for sure), but I'm going to throw it out there because I thought it summed it up well, complete with lots of funny gifs:

And that is why I have no interest in wasting my time with this series. Definitely not because my marriage will be stained by reading about a little sexy time.

Has anyone written any decent erotic fan fiction based on The Hunger Games? Now, THAT may be worth reading....decent characters, and a relationship that makes sense. It reminds me of some real-life stories of couples that went through war and refugee experiences together.
