Catholic Fundy on 50 Shades of Grey

Recommended Posts

While I would denounce 50 Shades of Grey for its terrible, terrible writing, this woman provides a lengthy dissertation as to why the book is not suitable reading for her fellow married women of childbearing age.

I don't know about you ladies, but I long to cultivate faith, hope, and charity in my heart, and in my home. I want to enjoy--and thrive in!--a relationship with my husband that is chaste and life-giving, and to grow in holiness and love through my marriage. Which is ultimately a picture of Jesus and His Church. His pure and spotless Bride.

And so our marriages are, for this reason alone, worth protecting from the stain of best-selling books like 50 Shades of Grey.

I can't stand this woman because she is so sanctimonious in every damn thing she writes, but I had to laugh at her pearl-clutching need to protect her marriage from the "stain" of a trashy novel.

It's a good thing that she has no idea about the kind of fan fiction I read(spoiler alert, it's of the male/male kind). It makes 50 Shades of Suck look tame.

True story lol. Fanfic is where it's at.

The Christian radio program I listen to did some pearl clutching over this book. They refused to say the name of it until one of their callers accidentally referred to it by name because they didn't want to tempt unwitting listeners into checking it out.!

I read her too, Ex! She is indeed sanctimonious ... I've been reading before she turned Catholic, too, so it's ironic to hear her talk about how it has been a lifelong calling.

ETA: And she's damn annoying when she waxes poetic about her children, IMO. We all love our kids, lady; you're not more special than the rest.

How can she opine on this unless she has read it? Naughty.

Honestly, if I trashy piece of fanfiction 'stains' your marriage, then I doubt your marriage was strong in the first place.

Can you have a chaste relationship with someone you presumably have sex with?

I thought that, too ... wouldn't it be faithful instead of chaste, in that situation?

That blog posting was annoying and I figured some fundie or evangelical would post a pearl clutching view on it. Women (including married) have been reading pulp erotica novels for a long time and their marriages are fine. I have read excerpts of Fifty Shades of Grey and the writing does seem crappy. I also read various types of fan fiction and I've seen some good writing. From what I've read E.L. James basically became popular in the Twilight fan fiction circles. She changed names around to publish Fifty Shades of Grey and she has basically lucked out in some ways. E.L. right now has more popularity than authors are better than her and it is kind of sad. Not all of people who have read or are reading her books are in love with them. I've seen a few book bloggers bash the book and a friend of mine a couple of weeks back posted on FB that the book was bad and overhyped.

In a way, I get amusement out of the fundies and others who want to censor the book. Some libraries aren't carrying the books. The movie rights for the trilogy have been sold and some people are wondering if the adapted screenplays will be toned down in order to achieve an R rating. I predict when the movie gets made, there will be various controversies attached to it. I bet when that time comes this blogger Brianna will again clutch her pearls over the movie.

If a crappy so-called erotic book can put a stain on your marriage, you are already fucked, and not in a good way.

I get really tired of the whole "let me explain to you in 100 words why God loves me more than everyone else." The funny thing is that Jesus would run away from all these self-rightous wackjobs.

If you do it according to her under a 'Picture of Jesus and HIS church' allegedly so. Have one of those you too can be a 'Spotless and pure bride.'

I kind of reckon sex is sex whether you have Van Gogh or Jesus looking on.

I think I've read this blog before a few times. The part about the adoptions seemed familiar to me. There are a couple of other convert Catholic bloggers that are pretty sanctimonious like Brianna.

I have a wall full of pictures of carbombings. This is because I am interested in carbombings.

If I had a headship, and we had sex under that, would that be more or less chaste than Van Gogh?

I love watching fundies review books they've never read. "Today we'll be discussing 50 Shades of Grey. Now I've never read it, but I want my loyal readers to know that it can destroy your marriage and turn you into a man".

So true. This particular blogger is an expert on whatever she's into at the moment and of course she's the rightest of them all. I've been reading her for years and first she was the rightest about sending kids to public schools so they could be a witness to the other poor non-evangelical Christian children (her dad is public school teacher). At that same time she was also an on fire for Jesus evangelical. Then when she adopted, everyone needed to adopt or they weren't really hearing the lord correctly. Then that became special needs adoption only. Why are all the selfish people out there adopting healthy infants? True Christians only adopt special needs children! And then she decided that public schools weren't going to work out after all because she doesn't like getting up early and it's easier for her to just have all of her kids home with her all day. After all, that's what god designed the family for! To be together 24/7!

Now all of a sudden she became Catholic and has been giving us lectures on how awesome Mary is like she's the first person to ever hear about it. Never mind the millions of people out there who were raised Catholic or who have a general familiarity with the faith. I know it's new to you that Catholics are indeed Christians, but now that you've caught on, please spare us the lecture series. This is not news to the rest of us.

Well, I learned something today. I didn't know there was such a thing as a Catholic Fundie. Do Catholic fundies know that regular fundies think they're idolators and not real Christians?

My oldest daughter just finished 50 Shades. I haven't read it, but it seems harmless enough. It's fiction. Once I learned it was based on Twilight that was enough to keep me away. I couldn't even finish the first chapter of the first book in that series because the writing was so horrendous.

Chastity isn't the same thing as sexual abstention. According to what I learned in Catholic religious ed, chastity=limiting sexual contact to one's spouse.

This sanctimonious blogger reminds me of a Protestant fundie chick who kept away from romance novels because she found them "unsatisfying from a spiritual perspective." Translation: They made her hot, and there was nothing she could do about it.

Yes, exactly this. She's so very dogmatic about all of her life choices, and sees no irony when they contradict each other, or turn on a dime. I get bugged by her strange brand of preachiness/optimism. When she adopted her daughters with Down Syndrome, she suddenly got on the DS adoption bandwagon (as the PP mentioned) and preached endlessly how they would do everything her other children would (i.e. attend college, marry, etc.), just "more slowly." My husband's only brother has Down Syndrome, and while he is the light of many lives and is dearly loved, he definitely won't be going to college or marrying (he is also non-verbal). It bothered me that while she was telling others that they had to/should definitely/how could they not adopt a child with Down Syndrome, she obviously wasn't fully educated about the broad spectrum of the disability ... and wasn't being "real" with those she was pushing to adopt, either.

A while back, Reddit got hold of one such blogger (in the Bay area) who was horrified by teh gheyz, and lit into her. I didn't make note of the name of blog and have been casually looking for it since. Does this ring any bells with anyone else?

I don't think I've come across that blogger. Do you have the reddit link? The other recent convert Catholic blogger that I came across through FJ is Cam at A Woman's Place. She is pretty annoying and she has her daughters wear headcoverings to Mass.

I was raised Catholic and occasionally I dealt with Catholic converts who became hardcore over time. My dad was in the Knights of Columbus and there was a woman at the parish that we attended whose husband converted. He joined several Catholic related organizations and he was very hardcore and a lot of KOC members disliked him.

The reddit thing happened last year.

She expressed that she was hesitant to leave her house with the kids because they might see homosexuals in action and then she'd have to explain to them what that was and oh, lordy, lordy, lordy! Reddit got wind of her somehow and pounced.

She claimed to have been a chemist before she converted and had a bunch of kids.

JFC, please. Don't you realize if her impressionable children saw two men doing the grocery shopping on Saturday morning that they might be scarred for life? :naughty: What if she had to explain that they touch the tomatoes in the farmer's market? You know, first you start to see them as human beings, and from there all kinds of shit can happen.
