Catholic Fundy on 50 Shades of Grey

Homosexuals in action? Was she visiting the local bumsex hotspots with kids in tow?

Maybe she was. Fundies or evangelicals who live in certain areas where there is well known LGBT presence sometimes do fear going out in public and possibly seeing a same sex couple kissing. I have a friend who lives in L.A. and he told me about incident in which a co-worker of his flat out said that he and his family would never live in West Hollywood because of the gays.

I don't think the West Hollywood residents will miss them. :-)

JFC, if there was a car bombing montage above our bed, my marriage would become QUITE chaste. My little brother's Beavis & Butthead poster was bad enough (he did get laid as a teen, eventually, but I'm sure not in that bed. Ugh.)

Obviously she's being snobbish because Song of Solomon is so much better written. I guess only ancient erotica preserved in religious texts do it for her. ;)

I have a wall full of pictures of carbombings. This is because I am interested in carbombings.

If I had a headship, and we had sex under that, would that be more or less chaste than Van Gogh?

Explosive fornication came to mind

My brain needs protection from the stain of horribly written, overrated wankfic. Aside from that, I'm really not a fan of all this "pure and spotless" crap. It's a fetish I don't share. I never understood this "chaste marriage" stuff when i was a Catholic, and I don't now. I think what it probably means is "close your eyes and think of England" except with Jesus and Mary possibly substituting for England, while the man hastily and ineptly "seminates within the proper vessel" which, yes, that IS how sex is described in many learned treatises by Catholic theologians. A really pure Catholic thinks foreplay is nasty, with the possible exception of a little kissing while reciting verses from the Song of Songs. As I said, not my kink.

Honestly, if I trashy piece of fanfiction 'stains' your marriage, then I doubt your marriage was strong in the first place.

Exactly!! LOL!

I thought that Christians were supposed to be strengthened by their faith. Then why do they act like such scared rabbits whenever they are faced with something they don't agree with? Gays, books, universal health care? Are these really such frightening things compared to their almighty God?

Their God gets smaller all the time seems like.

(Duggar family is the epitome of this - keeping their children so sheltered from the outside evil that they have no idea how to deal with anything when they are of adult age. JB & Mich are terrified of everything that is not Gothard approved. Sad lives.)

I've heard of 50 Shades of Grey. I gather it is erotic literature. So? If that isn't your cup of tea, don't read it. Why do they feel they have to storm the barricades over it? Is it because it is popular and they might suddenly accidently see a copy of it and die of an attack of the vapours?

JFC, please. Don't you realize if her impressionable children saw two men doing the grocery shopping on Saturday morning that they might be scarred for life? :naughty: What if she had to explain that they touch the tomatoes in the farmer's market? You know, first you start to see them as human beings, and from there all kinds of shit can happen.

It was pretty much like that. She and the kids had been at a public pool and she observed two guys "making eyes" at each other and rubbing elbows. She also saw two women at the park with a little boy and one of the women put her hand on the back of the other woman. Shocking. Shocking! I tell you.

Rosa, they aren't that bad. They're all black and white (colour photos of the aftermath of carbombs tend to not be a good idea, for obvious reasons. I'm not squeamish but they upset one of the comrades I live with enough as it is when he goes in my room).

Omagh's the one I have most of, I have before and after pics from a few angles. Also quite a few from Iraq, Norway, some other places - the Iraq ones, they aren't too fussy about cleaning up, so if that sort of thing bothers you, it's advisable not to look too closely at those. I do to work out what made them effective or not and guess at the payload (maths ain't my strong point so I'm off generally). I have Wall Street too, a lot of people regard that as the first use of the tactic but it depends heavily on your definition.

Norway is the most recent, and quite interesting. Breivik would have had a far higher death toll if he'd been 2 hours earlier. He couldn't have, of course - the manhunt would have started. He just had to cause a distraction.

My comrade says this is "morbid and sick" and I hasten to point out I have an interest in aspects of terrorism, not a plan to do any. Like all normal people I'm strongly opposed to carbombing as a tactic. And I can't drive anyway!

Butbutbut Song of Solomon isn't erotica! It's a purely metaphorical symbol of the transcendental relationship between Christ and Holy Mother Church! I mean, it isn't as if there are thinly veiled references to carnal practices like oral sex, or mentions of harems, or explicit references to eroticized portions of a woman's body, after all. That would be dirty.

[/fundie Catholic]

That was too easy! I guess it's like riding a bicycle. Which also isn't totally a thinly veiled reference to naughty fun sexytiems. At all. ^_~

Ugh, apparently she's pregnant again, too. I feel sorry for her growing brood.

I also feel sorry for her family. She reminds me of a younger version of Barbara Curtis from Mommy Life. I'm looking at Brianna's webstagram account and she has a picture of Stephen King's book memoir "On Writing". I wonder if she is a King fan girl. If she is, shouldn't she be pissed because of some stuff King has written.

I've had a few facebook friends link to blogs about "why I'm not watching Magic Mike or reading Shades of Gray." All I can think is, "who asked you?!?" I mean really, does anyone care why they are or aren't reading/watching?? I don't. One of my friends even posted a big thing about it, and the comments she got were hilarious. Lots of, "I'd NEVAH watch/read such a thing!" But the BEST were people claiming someone recommended the book to them and they got it without knowing what it was about and they are so embarassed/upset, etc. Same with the movie...one unsuspecting innocent woman was invited by a friend to go see it, and she went, not knowing what it was about. I call shenanigans! I'm guessing most people check movie descriptions and reviews before going, given the cost. And heck, I heard about 50 Shades by reading a news article! Just own it people. You wanted to read it and you did. You wanted to see it, and ya did!!

Oh, I think she's been itching to have another one since they converted and has hated the fact that they had to put it off a bit because of their adoptions. I do give her credit for using NFP around the time of the adoption. She's not completely lost her mind (yet). But I think having another baby now that they are Catholic is like some weird consummation of their conversion.

And she's another one who loves telling people how many kids she has, and then talking about their shocked, godless, anti-family reactions, so I'm sure she's pumped to bump the number one higher.

I agree wholeheartedly with this! In this day and age a person has no excuse to go blushblush, "oh, goodness, I just didn't know this movie was about men taking off clothes. Mercy!" When I worked at a bookstore we would get so many people returning books because they were deemed inappropriate. Then the adults would buy a young adult book. And my rage that grownups should read books for grownups is another growl for another time.

I agree with this. Many Catholics don't have large families these days and I can see Brianna acting holier than thou towards her fellow parishoners who don't have large families.

Why would adults reading young adult books be a bad thing? I like a lot of young adult books, I think they are interesting. I don't see anything wrong with reading young adult books, I even read juvenile fiction.

I also don't see anything wrong with adults reading young adult books. In the past few years YA books have improved quite a bit and some YA books really appeal to adults.

UHG converts! As a cradle Catholic these are the ones I run from. They have a really bad habit of trying to educate me on how to be a Catholic. You know because over 30 years in the faith, and a few years in Catholic school, numerous years in CCD and I don't know anything. Nothing I tell you NOTHING! The funniest is when you see the priest suddenly running off when they approach.

As for the op books do not ruin marriages, movies do not ruin marriages. And who cares what people are reading, no one is going to go on her silly little blog and think I better stop reading this NOW.

I do like to watch the Facebook fighting over this one book though. I watched a lady get kicked out of an online homeschool group because she was going on and on about how wonderful it was on her page.

I haven't read it but is it much worse than most sexy novels you can find?

I have read some excerpts of the book and the writing is pretty bad. A friend of mine read it and didn't like it. She has been reading BDSM and erotica novels for several years now and she said that it is a bit tame compared to what she had read before. 50 Shades of Grey managed to become mainstream and probably some of the people who have read it have never read anything similar before.

My mother, a lifelong cataloguing librarian with a Classics degree, always swore that unless a book were "fit" to be read by an adult, it shouldn't be given to a child to read. I think she meant writing and story quality (ie not insulting kids' intelligences), and certainly throughout my childhood she introduced me to lots of brilliant stuff. I think she would get hyperemesis reading those Moody screeds!

Slash/fic LOL Fanfic for the WIN. I heard '50 Shades' IS bad ff.net pornfic.

How can she opine on this unless she has read it? Naughty.

Oh I am soooooo tempted to share links to this really hot fanfict I found. Or some really hot online fict. Or incredibly good BDSM novels I know of. Unfortunately this is an all-ages site, but if anyone wants to PM me for the links...

For the record all of the above have only improved and strengthened my marriage. They have the whole understanding your sexuality thing entirely backwards, I swear. I feel bad for them most of the time.

I haven't read 50 shades yet but some friends I trust have read all of the above and this and have agreed with the suck level. That and anything that comes with the word "Twilight" attached is automatically suspect.

I didn't mean to offend anyone's literary choices. There are some really good YA novels. My problem stemmed from the multiple situations of an adult only reading YA novels because they have less objectionable content. Now, I live in the middle of the Jello Belt, so take that with a grain of salt.

I hope this works, I'm kinda a recovering Luddite, but this is similar to my feelings about some people's choices in reading material.
