I'm so jaded I looked at that photo of Jinger with the NYT and was like "Nah, she's not really reading it. It's just for the photo. :pb_lol:

If she had that open to the crossword puzzle (Sunday, please - ink only), I'd really be impressed. lol

My mother can do the NYT crossword puzzle (not sure about Sunday).  I'm in awe of her.

The girls can use their godly hair to cover their odd hairlines.  The boys are victims of gender rules and their receeding hairlines are front and center.

Call me crazy, but even as an atheist, i thought that Jeremy's caption was rather cute.  I can see that being a very sweet compliment, if I believed in God.

Definitely. I’d bet the paper was laying on the table at the coffee shop and it went a little like “hey, take a picture of me looking at this. We have to get a picture up so sponsors will keep sending us free stuff.”

Cynical me.

Fellow atheist here.  I found the caption kinda cute as well.

As for testimonies, I think my testimony of leaving religion is more interesting than how I initially found it.

How I found religion: Was curious, started going to church with a family friend and her son.

How I left religion: I realized that people (especially politicians) were using their religious beliefs to justify hateful positions towards people I particularly cared for (namely, the LGBT community) and that prayer had no effect whatsoever on whatever I or other people were praying for or about.  It didn’t help that religion was also the motivation for a lot of acts of terror in the world (I was 14 when 9/11 happened).  I got tired of the whole thing and decided I’d had enough with religion and I felt like the world was better off without me as a believer.  I don’t regret my decision to leave religion altogether at all.

Most testimonies tend to sound the same to me anyway.

Hm, for most fans and non-fans, J&J are their favorite of the Duggar-kids couples. But I still think there is something off about them. Jeremy just seems weird and Jinger is so shy and passive she just seems to go along with everything Jeremy says and wants.

I really want Jinger to express some spontaneous emotion like she did in the beginning of the series, before 2012. And I would like Jeremy to express this as well.

It's like they're both hiding who they really are from each other and in front of the camera.

Of course, you never know and it's all speculation, but ...

Honestly, I'm kind of conflicted about JinJer. I just hope Jeremy is good for/to Jinger, out of all the Duggars, she is the one I cheer for the most.

Well it would be, if it wasn't part of the same sentence advertising a product...    It's using God for personal benefit, because that post screams insta-dvertising for the hat company.

I didn't take it as "advertising" for the hat company; I took it to be a pitch from Jeremy to the hat company, asking the hat company for compensation for future hat posts.

From the hat company's insta:

Love Your Melon is an apparel brand dedicated to giving a hat to every child battling cancer and supporting the fight against pediatric cancer.

Perhaps they're just spreading awareness of a company they like that does good in the world? Mr. C and I make concerted efforts to shop at/ find companies like this, so I'm glad they posted it.

Love Your Melon is an influencer brand. The compensation they get is free product, AKA that hat. It’s a little different then something like FabFitFun. For FFF if you use the code provided by the c-list celeb, they get kickback. LYM sends them a free hat/scarf/whatever and asks them to shout their brand on social media. It’s not a partnership, but it’s still influencer marketing. 10/10 that hat was free. However, I’m all for these fundies using their social media to make money. They’re inevitably going to have eleventy billion kids, however they are able to pay for them without grifting is a-ok with me.

If they were, wouldn't they be saying what the company actually does though?

10/10 it was a insta-dvertising post, whether for cash or in exchange for a freebie, as @jacduggar says.  The positioning of the label was perfect for a photo like that, but wouldn't make sense when she was just wearing it, and the whole make-up of the tweet was about highlighting the brand.

It's not a hill to die on for me, it's just amusing when Fundies do this, combining God with profit.

We have absolutely no idea what their personal private interactions are like. And reality television is not real.

And social media isn't really the best way to understand anyone's life, whether they're a "celebrity" or not.

Love Your Melon is a MN brand. It's a great hat and a great company. I have one, I love it. Keeps my head warm :).

At least, they are promoting a company that actually gives 50 percent to the charity and it was a class project.

My bet is that they paid for it or they got it as a gift.

Maybe, maybe not. There's two other brands prominently featured, starbucks is also tagged and the NYT is visible. If they were getting paid/ requested to advertise it would be a singular brand per post at least per current social media marketing strategies. No brand wants to share the spotlight and it's something I discuss with the social media folk when reviewing their plans in the larger marketing schemes.  It could be a free hat and a shout out, but it could also them curating the image of being artsy, fashionable, intellectual, do gooders who care about others.

Given their push on SWAN, I also wouldn't expect them to throw a new cause at the leg humpers directly. SWAN is family though and it's unsurprising they're focusing on charities/products that benefit children.

@louisa05 So Ben’s testimony isn’t very original.

"It wasn't until his mid-teens..." LMAO.

Also, I find it strange that people assume that the Duggar kids couldn't get through a basic college program that didn't involve a lot of math or science (which I agree would require way too much remediation to be realistic). Maybe y'all on FJ have a higher opinion of the non-elite university system here in the US than I do. :pb_lol:

I have a master's from a fairly prestigious university where I TA'd undergrads, and I saw plenty of people with writing skills at Jill's level or below. I have also known a number of people who have managed to get bachelor's in subjects like communications, business, criminal justice, and even early childhood education despite a distinct lack of critical thinking skills and an average work ethic. Maybe they failed (or came close to failing) a math req along the way, but they graduated.

Clearly none of the Duggars are Ivy-material, and I think having kids will make it hard if not impossible for some of the young women. But most college graduates in the US are more like B/C students from Northwest Arkansas State - Tonitown (I just made that up) than they are like classics majors at Yale, or even econ majors at UT-Austin. Many even go back to school while holding down jobs or while being single moms.

The placement on of the label actually looks pretty normal to me. I'm from MN, where Love Your Melon started, so I see a ton of these hats in person and on social media. I even have a couple. It's also a pretty standard thing to show them off like that on social media, even if you're not a minor celeb. When the last one I bought arrived in the mail, the first thing I did was put a picture on social media.

Sure, still a very good chance that she posted for a freebie. But the post doesn't seem overly advertise-y to me.

I love baseball but I'm dreading the new season because the White Sox ownership is THE FUCKING WORST. I watched Dominican League Baseball (Lidom!) over the winter and fell in love with their joy, spirit, and exuberance. The broadcasts were in Spanish and my Spanish is pretty weak but I loved catching phrases and repeating them. Bombe! I'm sad about MLB and Commissioner Idiota's busywork rules. But I love baseball, always and forever.
I guess I don't have a point. Just bitching. Te amo mucho, Lidom!

      Happy International Women's Day!

Humanity may have some work to do, to improve gender equality, but I was glad to hear that France has taken an important step to protect healthcare for women (and people of other genders who can get pregnant).

Feeling ragey this morning. I have a doctor's appointment this afternoon in the hope of getting help for an ongoing injury. I went to a (different!!) doctor late last year who completely blew me off. He wouldn't do diagnostic testin, he refused to send me to a specialist, and he just told me to "take it easy" and "take ibuprofen." I'm hopeful for today's appointment but I'm also feeling a SEVERE amount of rage at that doctor from last year!

Well, the rash is back with a vengeance. It never completely cleared up. I saw the derm yesterday and they did another swab and yup, raging infection again, still? It is definitely strep skin infection. I am getting so damn tired and run down from this. Who the f would immagine being hospitalized freaking TWICE for a rash?

My niece is going to be a seat filler at this year's Academy Awards.  Seat fillers are asked to wear tuxedos regardless of sex/gender.  If you see a pretty young woman with very curly hair, it could be my niece.
