Well, virgins are traditionally believed to have intact hymens, unlike non-virgins. (Of course, it's not always true, as lots of things can stretch/tear a hymen before sex.) Therefore, "purity rings" are telling us about the purported state of their wearers' hymens.

I don't know if was Kate's mindset then, TLC's suggestion, or trying to be more Duggarlike... but as the marriage fell apart, Kate forgot all about being modest and ended up on a magazine cover in bikini.

I believe most fundies pick and choose what's modest and immodest to fit their lives, and it's often in the context of illustrating how someone else is immodest (or showing how the fundy is modester-than-thou).

Its all about selling the brand. In the beginning the brand was the big family and how it worked. As they got more attention they became the model for all of fundiedom. The more attention they got the more power they held at TLC... and so they had to become more like their present brand "modest" and pure... thus the blurring. Its shocking bullshit.

It's not. A lot of fundies don't even know what a hymen is (because it's wrong to even talk about genitals :roll: ). Fundie guys often wear purity rings, too, and they are equally expected to not have sex until marriage. It's not about hymens except in a figurative sense. There are some cultures where girls really are expected to have intact hymens until marriage, or else, but this isn't one of them.
